This video features our big band’s second performance of “Kid From Red Bank”. The date of this recording is Oct 31 2025. Hopefully, you are reading this in December 2025 and you have seen my previous post also.

Don’t forget, my costume, I’m dressed as a “Reindeer Manure Technician.”
I’m not Santa. I’m not a worker elf costume.

This is a FOLLOW-UP COMPARISON opportunity!

Same song, 10 days later, different performance venues, and a weird costume. Not a repost! It’s October 31st 2025 now and this is the second video. Take a look at the previous day’s post to see the previous performance.

This was one of the more difficult songs for me. I had to practice a lot. I had to practice a lot with and without my instrument. I practiced counting in a very specific way almost all day sometimes. 12 bar blues changes like this,

“1234, 2234 , 3234, 4234, 5234, 6234, 7234, 8234, 9234, te234, ele234, twel234”

Doing that gives me a memory of how it should “feel” to play a 12 bar blues. Using my ear and seeing it from different perspectives and then forming ideas out of that keeping my place if I want to look away from the chart. The higher level is to count properly and organize a songs arrangement in your head so that you don’t need the chart/sheet music. For example, I told myself that the first section of this song goes through 12 bar blues changes about eight times before it gets to the group figures. So, that's a macro perspective upon the song and if a person wasn't good at reading music notes and rhythms, they could tell themselves such a thing. The irony is that people who do read notes and aspire to read notes better still also aspire to get away from the music.

In practice, this song forces me to move around the bass neck and that’s very healthy. At a concert, I might opt to avoid high risk maneuvers and just stay focused on my place in the music.

NEXT, a new song. “Almost Like Being In Love.” the start of a new video comparison opportunity. This song has a singer!

Thank you for reading, watching, and supporting.
