A few days after the delivery, in some women, the milk supply comes on so quickly and heavily that the breasts become swollen, hard and sore. This is called breast engorgement. The nipple and breast may become swollen enough so that the baby is unable to suckle.
How are engorged breasts managed?
- Regular feeding is the best treatment for the engorged breasts.
- Manually express out the extra milk also help if milk is more than the baby's need.
- When feeding, finish one side completely
