Transcribing Transcribing Transcribing ... .png

Sigh, why did we do this to ourselves... our ensemble is hosting a community playing and workshop day. Playing and reading Baroque pieces in the Early Music style... well, our understanding of Early Music.

And that means that there are multiple instruments at either modern Classical pitch (440Hz) or modern standard Baroque pitch (415Hz)... and for them to play together successfully... well, we need to transcribe the parts into Musescore... and export a semitone higher (if we want 415->440) or a semitone lower (440->415).

Now, this due to the wind and brass instruments being fixed pitch instruments... they can't change between the two pitches... harpsichords, we will have a couple of transposing harpsichords, and a couple of non-transposing ones for the appropriate pitches for the different sessions. And strings can easily tune up or down as required.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time... most modern players don't own Baroque instruments... and so for them to take part, it would need to be at 440Hz... but then there are existing Baroque enthusiasts who have their historical instruments at 415Hz... and ideally, we want everyone playing and enjoying making music together... and discovering our way of interpreting together!

So, mixed pitches it would have to be... And that means we have a poopload of music to import into Musescore so that we can transpose it!

At least I'm getting pretty fast at doing it... I managed to transcribe a whole overture in the last 2 hours... I'm taking a break now for the night... and I will add in the markings tomorrow. Then my wife will start realising and giving hints for the continuo figure bass parts so that the keyboard people don't freak out!

Thankfully, once it is imported, it is also easy to create B-flat and other parts for those pesky modern brass and wind instruments! Transposing and ALSO pitch-moved... that will do my head in as I try to figure out which way to go... up down how many steps?
