Greetings to all! Welcome to Music Delivery, a space where I recommend music from all over the world, this time I come to tell you about the Taiwanese band: Elephant Gym.
Elephant Gym is one of those bands that with each album expand their horizons a little more. They started out as a math rock band but over time they experimented, collaborating with singers of all kinds, and even fusing traditional Taiwanese songs with math rock and hip hop.
The band is a power trio consisting of brothers KT Chang (bass) and Tell Chang (guitar), and drummer Chia-Chin Tu.

¡Un saludo a todos! Bienvenidos a Music Delivery, un espacio donde les recomiendo música de todas partes del mundo, esta vez vengo a hablarles de la banda Taiwanesa: Elephant Gym.
Elephant Gym es de esas bandas que con cada álbum expanden un poco más sus horizontes. Iniciaron siendo una banda de math rock pero con el tiempo fueron experimentando, colaborando con cantantes de todo tipo, llegando a hacer fusión entre cantos tradicionales taiwaneses con math rock y hip hop.
La banda es un power trio conformado por los hermanos KT Chang (bajo) y Tell Chang (guitarra), y el baterista Chia-Chin Tu.

Balance (2013)
Balance es un álbum un poco disperso, aquí cada canción se compone de varias ideas que avanzan una tras otra, sin vuelta atrás, donde no hay coros sino ideas sucesivas, dando como resultado temas de larga duración.
La mayoría de los temas son instrumentales, pero algunos cuentan con una voz masculina cantando en inglés.
Las composiciones son de estilo math rock alternativo, con algunas melodías dulces, batería con sonido seco un tanto punk, y guitarras con distorsión. Tienen un sonido rockero que de hecho me recuerda un poco a American Football.

Balance is a somewhat scattered album, here each song is composed of several ideas that advance one after the other, without turning back, where there are no choruses but successive ideas, resulting in songs of long duration.
Most of the songs are instrumental, but some of them feature a male voice singing in English.
The compositions are alternative math rock style, with some sweet melodies, dry sounding drums with a bit of punk, and guitars with distortion. They have a rock sound that actually reminds me a bit of American Football.

Angle (2014)
Al inicio del álbum escuchamos dos melodías saltarinas entre un piano y una flauta, dejando claro desde el principio que este es un nuevo Elephant Gym. Con Angle se arriesgan y reestructuran su propuesta, presentando composiciones menos pesadas y mejor estructuradas.
En este álbum incluyen sonidos limpios y acústicos, disminuyendo el uso de la distorsión. Además incorporan una voz femenina que canta en mandarín y empiezan a fusionar, incluyendo cantos tradicionales en temas como Swan. Todo totalmente opuesto a su primer disco, toman riesgos que les aportan personalidad a su música.

At the beginning of the album we hear two jumping melodies between a piano and a flute, making it clear from the beginning that this is a new Elephant Gym. With Angle they take a risk and restructure their proposal, presenting less heavy and better structured compositions.
In this album they include clean and acoustic sounds, decreasing the use of distortion. They also incorporate a female voice singing in Mandarin and begin to fuse, including traditional vocals in songs such as Swan. All totally opposite to their first album, they take risks that bring personality to their music.

Work (2016)
Work es el EP con el que definen un sonido propio a math rock. En este álbum las composiciones se mantienen progresivas pero ordenadas, tienen frases pegajosas y coros. El sonido es más limpio y profesional.
Work es un EP bastante corto, tan solo son 4 canciones con una duración total de 16 minutos, es breve pero es bueno, por lo que les recomiendo que su primer acercamiento a Elephant Gym sea con este EP. Además este álbum abre con Midway, que de todos los temas de Elephant Gym es mi favorito.

Work is the EP with which they define their own math rock sound. In this album the compositions remain progressive but orderly, they have catchy phrases and choruses. The sound is more clean and professional.
Work is a pretty short EP, only 4 songs with a total length of 16 minutes, it's short but it's good, so I recommend that your first approach to Elephant Gym be with this EP. Also this album opens with Midway, which of all the Elephant Gym tracks is my favorite.

Underwater (2018)
Underwater es su álbum más experimental, aquí no hay solo math rock sino también jazz funk y hip hop, es por ello que en este proyecto empiezan a utilizar efectos electrónicos y cuentan con cantantes invitados, aun así, mantienen el sello de tener tanto temas instrumentales como canciones.
Quilt es uno de mis temas favoritos del álbum porque tiene una línea de guitarra, al estilo math rock, sobre una composición orientada al jazz funk, la cual tiene bastantes cambios rítmicos y melódicos interesantes.

Underwater is their most experimental album, here there is not only math rock but also jazz funk and hip hop, that's why in this project they start using electronic effects and have guest singers, even so, they keep the seal of having both instrumental tracks and songs.
Quilt is one of my favorite tracks on the album because it has a math rock style guitar line over a jazz funk oriented composition, which has quite a few interesting rhythmic and melodic changes.

Dear Humans (2020)
El año pasado Elephant Gym reapareció con el single Dear Humans, un tema que trata sobre el apocalipsis y los humanos dejando la tierra, así de loco como suena, de eso trata la canción.
Como es usual en esta banda el bajo lidera muchas de las partes, mientras la guitarra refuerza las melodías catchy. El tema se mantiene como un math rock alternativo hasta que en el minuto 2:50 hacen un walking bass acompañado del swing en la batería, incluyendo un poco de jazz en la mezcla, para luego retomar sutilmente al rock con la melodía principal.
Este tema en particular me recuerda mucho a Midway, como si guardaran ciertas similitudes en las frases, razón por lo que Dear Humans también me gusta muchísimo.
Last year Elephant Gym reappeared with the single Dear Humans, a track about the apocalypse and humans leaving the earth, as crazy as it sounds, that's what the song is about.
As usual with this band the bass leads many of the parts, while the guitar reinforces the catchy melodies. The song stays as an alternative math rock until at 2:50 they do a walking bass accompanied by the swing on the drums, including a bit of jazz in the mix, to then subtly return to rock with the main melody.
This track in particular reminds me a lot of Midway, as if they keep certain similarities in the phrases, which is why I also really like Dear Humans.
Al escuchar Elephant Gym puedo percibir la evolución de la banda, en cuanto a composición y producción han mejorado y sido muy flexibles en cuanto a gustos e influencias. Con el correr del tiempo han sabido arriesgarse y redescubrirse una y otra vez, obteniendo buenos resultados de esa constante experimentación.
Algo que me gusta mucho de esta banda es que incluyen su idioma nativo y su tradición, fusionándola con algo mucho más moderno, por lo que no se limitan en géneros ni estructuras.
Como math rock sus melodías son muy animadas, algo que me gusta ya que no es un math rock pesado, sino que poseen melodías saltarinas y alegres, lo que lo hace digerible para personas no familiarizadas con el género.

Listening to Elephant Gym I can perceive the evolution of the band, in terms of composition and production they have improved and have been very flexible in terms of tastes and influences. With the passing of time they have known how to take risks and rediscover themselves again and again, obtaining good results from this constant experimentation.
Something I really like about this band is that they include their native language and tradition, fusing it with something much more modern, so they do not limit themselves in genres or structures.
As math rock their melodies are very upbeat, something I like since it is not heavy math rock, but they have jumpy and happy melodies, which makes it digestible for people not familiar with the genre.
