The evolution of my taste in music

My music tastes have changed multiple times throughout the years. Let’s take a trip down my many different preferences that seem to change about every 5 years.

Rap (2000-2005)

My first favorite type of music was rap. I started listening when I was around 8 years old. Back then CDs were still the main way of listening. Stores like Wal-Mart only sold edited version of the albums, meaning they had all of the “dirty words” taken out. I of course loathed the CDs that didn’t have the actual lyrics in them. I always had to beg my parents to let me get the original versions. Luckily they would allow me to from time to time. My two favorite rappers from my childhood were Ludacris and 50 Cent.

Heavy Metal (2005-2010)

My next phase started thanks to my discovery of Guitar Hero 2. I became obsessed with that game and got extremely good at it. I was able to play on expert difficulty for every single song. This game encouraged me to seek out more bands such as: Killswitch Engage, Haste the Day, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, Sevendust, The Devil Weara Prada, Lamb of God, and Underoath.

I can remember listening to my music on my iPod Nano every morning before school while I was riding the bus. It was some pretty heavy stuff to wake up to at 7am in the morning. I of course had a collection of band tees represent.

My parents were even awesome enough to drop me off for a day at Rock on the Range in Columbus, OH when I was 15. It was the second year they had this festival, I went in 2008. This was my first experience with live music ever and the lineup was stacked.

Hip Hop (2010-2015)

Eventually I came back to the evolution of what the rap I used to love had become. Modern hip hop had me obsessed again. The beats had transformed with even more versatility thanks to the various softwares that producers were able to use. That and the variety of new types of rap inspired me to listen once again.

This is when I got into graphic design and started creating mixtape covers for some my favorite artists such as Kid Ink and Ab-Soul. Even if they didn’t always use them, getting comments back from my favorite hip hop artists was really awesome. It motivated me to get better and better at graphic design. I taught myself everything that I know by watching videos and practicing for over 10 years. I’m very proud of my design skills now.

My last year of high school I went to see Wiz Khalifa and Yelawolf live with my high school best friend. The week before starting college I got to see Lil Wayne and Rick Ross with one of my car buddies. While in college I went with another best friend to see ASAP Rocky & Ferg and Danny Brown. These shows were all great, but I always felt a bit out of place in the crowd for some reason.

Once I dropped out of college, that’s when I really started to lose interest in hip hop. It was slowly starting to be taken over by a new generation of total degenerates that always talked nonsense. Sure the beats kept getting better, but I just couldn’t stay into it.

EDM (2015-Present)

Nowadays I’m heavily into EDM. It’s by far my favorite. The unique sounds and bass lines are what make me happiest. I first learned that I loved EDM when I was invited to smoke DMT for the first time with some new friends in college, they were playing dubstep. From then on it was programmed in my DNA to vibe with electronic music.

There are so many great artists that I could make a near infinite list. Some of my favorites are: Kompany, Kai Wachi, Monxx, Excision, Lit Lords, Sullivan King, Phase One, Liquid Stranger, and so many more.

My first ever rave was in July of 2017, I saw Ganja White Night in Virginia Beach. I was so nervous and didn’t know what to expect. As soon as I entered the venue I was transformed. It was as if this was where I was always meant to be, I felt at home. I had never let loose and danced in front of people in my entire life up until this point, that all changed that summer night. I danced for over 4 hours straight and learned it was one of my favorite things in the world.

After that I went to more than 20 different shows. Most of them I went to alone, but some I got to bring people with me. My brother and best friend both have gotten to go with me before. We have had some of the best times at raves together. It’s the one thing I miss most now that COVID has ruined the live music scene.

Everyone needs music

This post was inspired by my new friend @pusen’s recent post. I think we all have a love and need for some type of music. Everyone has different tastes and it fluctuates throughout the years. Eventually most of us will settle in and and fine what we enjoy the most. I know that I like almost all types of music. If I only were able to pick one genre, it would be EDM.

Thanks for sharing your musical journey!

I have a fun memory of Killswitch Engage. I was seeing them at Hellfest in 2016 I think it was. They were supposed to headline one of the stages at midnight and my favorite Norwegian band Kvelertak was supposed to play at 18 o clock. When I arrived there at 18 Killswitch took to the stage instead. I was surprised. Turned out they had switched sets in the last minute.

I actually saw Yelawolf the same year at Malakoff in Norway. Amazing show. I really got into his album Love Story. The song Heartbreak was my favorite.

In Norway we have something called “russefeiring” which is basically a high school graduation celebration. We party from the 1st of May through the 17th of may. We wear red silly pants and hats. It’s amazing. I went to what’s called “Landstreffet Stavanger” and saw Skrillex and Avicii. The shows were really good and energetic even though I ended up on the sickbay with an concussion after Avicii.

I can't believe I hadn't made a post like this one before. Thanks for giving me the idea!

Was Adam Dutkiewicz still playing guitar for Killswitch when you saw them? I’ll never forget he came out with a blow up doll attached to him. He would pretend that he was fucking it while he shredded his guitar solos.
They also still had Howard Jones as their lead singer when I was there too. Now he is with Light the Torch.

Can’t forget when I saw Yelawolf. I didn’t even know who he was at the time, but I liked his dirty white trash look. He had girls come up form the crowd and dance on him during “Daddy’s Lambo”. My favorite song from him for sure. That and “Pop the Trunk”.

Over two weeks of partying! Now that sounds fun. Going to some EDM shows is the best way to have fun. Skirllex was one of the first DJs that I ever listened to. You for sure gotta be careful with the headbanging. If you don’t know what you’re doing that brain will rattle around for sure.

This is awesome, I think more people should be posting this kind of content, it is great to see how people can change their taste through the beautiful discovery of music. I might do my own post about this!

I also love rap music.....Cool music feel me better like sleep.

My inner thug still comes out when some west coast beat starts hitting with some clever gangsta wordplay.

Interesting journey!

I can listen to a lot of different styles... but Metal is main home. I always return to it. 😈

Metal is full of energy and not just the pissed off mad kind. I love it!
