Blue Mitchell was an American trumpeter who played jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, funk and rock, as well as being a songwriter. Although the way he played his instrument fits well in the hard bop style, nowadays he is often overlooked because he never stood out above other musicians despite his talent. He collaborated with alto saxophonists Jackie McLean, Al Cohn and Lou Donaldson, tenor saxophonists Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley and Johnny Griffin, guitar player Grant Green, organist and soul jazz father Jimmy Smith, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. He began playing in rhythm and blues bands until he was discovered by renowned alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, who included him on his 1958 album Portrait of Cannonball. That same year he joined the Horace Silver Quintet until its dissolution in 1964, greatly improving the quality of his performance. He then took over Silver’s group, replacing him with extraordinary pianist Chick Corea, and drummer Roy Brooks with Al Foster, until 1969.

However, he also formed a hard bop quintet with tenor saxophonist Harold Land and they released Mapenzi (1977). Mitchell continued to freelance in this multifaceted way until his untimely death from cancer in 1979 at the age of 49. His most important albums as a leader are Big Six (1958), Blue Soul (1959) and The Thing to Do (1964).
