I Spoke Too Soon - Nightmare Is Still On!

Nightmare Continues

Whoops! So yesterday I posted saying I would be getting the Gladiator back (my music PC) and managed to pick it up from the PC repair lad earlier. We had a chat about what the heck happened and in conclusion, I'll never be updating Windows ever again! Anyway, getting back home, excited like a kid in the sweet shop, the PC fires up and is ready to go before I've even released the power on button. Damn, gotta love solid state drive! Obviously, the PC is pretty bare at the moment but I was mostly keen on if the files across the main drives I had were recoverable.

Panic!

I saw that one of the drives had been rescued which is where I have all the tracks I've bought over the years for my radio shows but the music production and latest tunes... Couldn't see where these were. Heart rate is going through the roof at this point and so I messaged the PC repair lad and he assured me it's all on there. I said I couldn't find it. Then I remembered I had to go and eat something seeing as it's been a while and I was furiously eating in uproar.

Uproar

In fact, I made a drum & bass track called Uproar which is very difficult to find these days, probably because I asked for it to be taken down but YouTube still insists on keeping it up there - weirdly it's on YouTube Music and I can't embed it as a player here on the blog... so yeah, this is how I felt as I was eating during my dinner. It was released way back in 2015 but I think the label it was on disbanded since so I may re-release it at some point.

Next Step

Back to the PC though!

So I get back from aggressively noshing my dinner and receive a message - we're going to try and install the files on my PC remotely over the weekend as the repair lad still has a back-up at his. Phew!

I think I'll be synchronising my music PC to my cloud backup going forward rather than manually doing it every month - can't be going through this stress again!

Hope you have a great weekend folks - I'll keep you posted! Fingers crossed!

Nicky

If you have Windows 10 its not that easy, unfortunatly. It defends itself with claws and teeth from having the update function disabled. I've tried all sorts of things, but it keeps repairing itself. I must have had a thousand useless updates so far, that only create problems and fill the HDD. And performance has not improved the slightest bit.

Damn Windows lol! All their updates seem to do is just wreck instruments! I'll be learning my lessons though, back everything up on a regular basis!

Well, the update didn't shoot my entire PC down yet. But its just annoying because its completely useless. It doesn't run faster or better than on day one, after perhaps 50 or so updates. And a couple of times I had to install the WLan driver again, because it had vanished after the update. But Microsoft is going on my nerves for 30 years now, ever since Windows 3.1 came out. I would not have grey hair without them... :)

Haha, I think we must have had the same experience except that update which wrecked the WLAN driver totally destroyed my PC and gave it the BSOD! Lol, repping the Windows hair, love it!

Now 11 hrs later, did you got your files?

Regarding the sync with your online storage, or doing this manual every month: Why not connect like a LaCie external hard drive configured to backup continuously? Not sure how this works on a Windows machine, but such a drive together with my standard Time Machine backup software provided by the Mac OS works perfectly for my MacBook. Incrementals every day and a full backup once so often. You could also get a NAS with 4 or more hard disk in it configured in RAID5 or even better in RAID6, da bits will be all over the place and still available after a crash of a disk (RAID5) or 2 disks (RAID6). Get yourself a NAS that has some proper backup service included in case you do not engineer enough to add such software to the NAS yourself.

Keep in mind, sync with the Cloud is not a backup. When removing a file from your local system, it'll be removed from the cloud as well. Fora ll your music bought and created you want to make sure errors can be undone. The error of deleting a file or folder is easily made.

Your disk guy made a full backup, which is super for you. Actually, in case this guy would've not created a full backup, I would've recommended you to seek another guy since making such backup is standard practice by those who understand their engineering job :)

22 hours later I do! I also had to reset my router in the process as it kept cutting the connection. It was all happening!

I have a western digital HD that I also back everything up on to but I think I will invest in another just to have even more back-ups! It's remembering to do it but now I have a whiteboard, I will have it forever written on there - BACK YOUR SHIT UP!! I've not come across RAID or NAS that you mention.

Yes the PC guy did a super job and now I have everything I need - even that Deep Techno/Tech House track I have been talking about - can't wait to share it with you!!

NAS: something like this one... I have one with 4 disks https://www.centralpoint.nl/qnap/

Thanks for the tip. 4 disks? It really is true, you can never have enough back-ups 😃

4 disks in RAID5: this protects against a single disk failure, ie whenever 1 of the disks fails. RAID configurations determine how the data is distributed across the 4 disks and how many disks may fail before losing data while taking care of specific requirements for fast read/write. The more protection, the more overhead data absorbed for RAID. RAID5 I use. RAID6 protects against 2 disk failures. Keep in mind: When purchasing all hard disk in the same RAID set, at once from the same supplier, it may very well be that these disks are produced in the same batch at the factory. Any production error will likely be applied to all disks in that production run. Also, the lifetime of disks from the same production run is more or less equal. When 1 disk fail, it's likely the 2nd disk will fail soon as well. Cases are known, two or more disks from the same production run, fail almost at the same time. That's why professional installations, mix disks from different production runs. In RAID sets, HDDs (or SSDs or NVME's whatever disk type is used in the RAID set) are to be of the same size and specs to make sure the RAID set performs best. Sure, you don't have to go for a NAS at all, but use 1 or 2 external HDDs to store and backup your files, but a NAS saves you a lot of headaches. That said, the RAID configuration is to be applied and carefully chosen. I can help you with this if you like. IN the end it all boils down to effort, and your own requirements what the best solution is for you :)

Say Wot aghhh no way feel your pain bro and was just talking about Windowsupdate with a producer friend of mine as we both have had real strange problems the last few days from what we think is Windows updates.

For your production backups I would recommend Splice and also Megasync bro give me a shout if you want more info they are both a godsend for backing stuff up and also great for collabs 😁

Also looking into some Linux options now there is lots more production software and Wine seems to be able to deal with latency much better I will let you know how I get on and leave you to triple backup everything now its all home safe.

Bigup Nicky after all that upset rekon your due some real nice Karma now 👍

Aha yeah mate, been a rollercoaster here of emotions but think we're out of the woods today! Thanks for the recommendation on Splice - have heard of that but will just try and get the PC set up first for making music again, there's no software or anything on it, pretty bare bones here haha!

I have a feeling this week is going to be life changing in another way though - will keep you posted!

Oh no!!

I am going to have to think about cloud storage, too, but...

Hope it all comes right sooon...

Thanks Fiona, I think it will just make sense to have it in the cloud and sync it up constantly. Every time something like this happens, always need to make changes to the back-up habits!

feeling your pain! we run everything from a cloud now for a long time...so much more secure so good luck and big love from Brighton!

Thanks guys! Yeah going to have to do that. Used to run it off my hardware USB device but even that is susceptible to crashing so running off the cloud it is!

Thanks for continuing to make Hive awesome.
