The most amazing things happen where you least expect them and at times when you never expect them. Never in my life would I have guessed that such a vibrant house scene existed in this "B" town. "B" as in Berlin? Far from it. It goes to Beirut!

Nie im Leben wäre ich darauf gekommen, dass es in dieser Stadt mit "B" solch eine lebhafte Hous Szene existiert. "B" wie Berlin? Weit gefehlt. Es geht nach Beirut!
If you’ve partied in Beirut, you’ve probably heard of Tala Mortada. A professional illustrator and animator, Tala eventually combined her love of art with music, creating full-on visual performances for partygoers. The Lebanese artist-turned-DJ made a name for herself in the underground club scene, but what really sets her apart is her role in local activism.
Art-director-turned-DJ Tala Mortada is hoping to influence the youth of Beirut through a means with which everyone can get on board: partying. Trendy promo-group C U NXT SAT hosts one of Beirut’s biggest club nights. It’s held at the Grand factory, where Mortada DJs, but is more than just a club: It uses dance music as a springboard for political change. Together with her team, Tala has started a clothing donation programme in the club, encouraging clubbers to bring extra clothing to help refugee families. On top of this she offers a recycling program, and a competition for local musicians to win a month’s studio time in Berlin, under the title Beirut Berlin Express. Does she view her work as political? “No, I think it’s mostly social. I feel like anyone who has a voice, anywhere in the world, also has a responsibility,” she says. “The young people see we’re different because we really try to provide an escape. If you feel like there’s no real purpose in life, we try to make them feel at home. The club is our playground, but it’s also our escape. If people dream with us, or have hope, or if we get to reflect on what’s happening in the country positively, it makes it all worthwhile.” There’s more women than ever before on line-ups, and it’s only getting better, explains Mortada. “The electronic scene is full of men around the world, and we’re talking about a country in the Middle East. Compared to the situation, and the size of the country, I think we’re doing a pretty good job.”

Als professionelle Illustratorin und Animatorin kombinierte Tala ihre Liebe zur Kunst mit der Musik und kreiert seitdem visuelle Performances für Partygänger. Die aus dem Libanon stammende Künstlerin und DJ hat sich in der Underground-Clubszene einen Namen gemacht, aber was sie wirklich auszeichnet, ist ihre Rolle als lokale Aktivistin.
Art-Director und DJ Tala Mortada hofft, die Jugend von Beirut durch mit Etwas zu beeinflussen, bei dem jeder mitmachen kann: Feiern. Die angesagte Promo-Gruppe C U NXT SAT veranstaltet eine der größten Clubnächte in Beirut. Sie findet in der Grand Factory statt, wo Mortada als DJ auflegt. Tala ist aber mehr als nur in der Clubszene aktiv: Sie nutzt Musik als Sprungbrett für politischen Wandel. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Team hat Tala im Club ein Kleiderspendenprogramm ins Leben gerufen, bei dem die Clubbesucher aufgefordert werden, zusätzliche Kleidung mitzubringen, um Flüchtlingsfamilien zu helfen. Darüber hinaus bietet sie ein Recycling-Programm und einen Wettbewerb für lokale Musiker an, die unter dem Titel Beirut Berlin Express einen Monat Studiozeit in Berlin gewinnen können. Sieht sie ihre Arbeit als politisch an? "Nein, ich denke, sie ist eher sozial. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass jeder, der eine Stimme hat, irgendwo auf der Welt, auch eine Verantwortung hat", sagt sie. "Die jungen Leute sehen, dass wir anders sind, weil wir wirklich versuchen, einen Ausweg zu bieten. Wenn sie das Gefühl haben, keinen wirklichen Sinn im Leben zu haben, versuchen wir, ihnen ein Zuhause zu geben. Der Club ist unser Spielplatz, aber er ist auch unsere Zuflucht. Wenn die Leute mit uns träumen, wenn sie Hoffnung haben oder wenn wir über das, was im Land passiert, positiv reflektieren können, dann ist es das alles wert. Es gibt mehr Frauen als je zuvor im Line-up, und es wird immer besser, erklärt Mortada. "Die elektronische Szene ist weltweit voller Männer, und wir sprechen hier von einem Land im Nahen Osten. Verglichen mit der Situation und der Größe des Landes, denke ich, dass wir einen ziemlich guten Job machen."

Das 2. Set ist etwas ruhiger und sphärischer mit einigen 80er-Jahre-Beat-Einflüssen mit Gesang und Synthesizer - und Tala liefert wieder: dieser Beat. Er bringt deinen Körper dazu, sich automatisch zu bewegen.
