Algunas canciones tienen un simbolismo muy extraño: hablo de letras que parecieran oscuras, abstractas, con mensajes muy duros o sensibles. No juzgo al artista, ni mucho menos al cantante. El arte es así: tiene múltiples formas de manifestarse, incluso con moralejas políticamente incorrectas. Como buen amante de la música que soy, me paseo en las sonatas que llevan alguna reflexión poderosa dentro de su lírica, sin profundizar en el fondo del Iceberg. El rock siempre ha ganado mucho terreno entre mis gustos, y quizás de allí se desprenda la lógica de este post.
En esta selección de canciones, hallarás una música un poco diferente, pero no por eso descabellada. Como diría la letra de una de las piezas seleccionadas: es un viaje de ida, pero no de vuelta. Una vez que las oyes, es difícil desprenderse de estas.
Some songs have a very strange symbolism: I am talking about lyrics that seem dark, and abstract, with very harsh or sensitive messages. I am not judging the artist, much less the singer. Art is like that: it has multiple ways of manifesting itself, even with politically incorrect morals. As the good music lover that I am, I wander through the sonatas that carry some powerful reflection within their lyric, without delving into the depths of the Iceberg. Rock has always gained a lot of ground among my tastes, and perhaps that's where the logic of this post comes from.
In this selection of songs, you will find music that is a little different, but not for that reason outlandish. As the lyrics of one of the selected pieces would say: it's a one-way trip, but not a return trip. Once you hear them, it's hard to get rid of them.
Ghost - Mary On A Cross
Me familiaricé muy rápido con el ritmo de esta canción, muy similar, al menos para mí, a la música ochentera. La letra, por otro lado, es bastante oscura, sin tocar los límites de la vulgar. Mary, la principal protagonista dentro de esta pieza musical, vive atrapada en la mente de aquel hombre que no la deja de pensar, que no la deja ir... que la ata a él de alguna forma sobrenatural. Porque sí, al parecer Mary ya no vive como para amarlo, después de un relato entonado en el que ambos terminaron llenos de moretones. Asumo, especulando en la lírica, que se trató de un evento que los separó para siempre de manera trágica.
Divago, lo sé, me gusta retratar lo que oigo con una perspectiva muy personal. Mary On A Cross es una canción que refleja el sufrimiento y el dolor, como la cruz de los pecados y la purificación, con extrañas metáforas y alegorías a la libertad rockera y los sueños de dos, además del sacrificio que al menos Mary, pagó o no contempló antes de pagar.
I quickly became familiar with the rhythm of this song, very similar, at least for me, to eighties music. The lyrics, on the other hand, are quite dark, without touching the limits of vulgarity. Mary, the main protagonist within this piece of music, lives trapped in the mind of that man who won't stop thinking about her, who won't let her go... who ties her to him in some supernatural way. Because yes, apparently Mary is no longer alive enough to love him, after an intoned story in which they both ended up bruised. I assume, speculating lyrically, that it was an event that tragically separated them forever.
I digress, I know, I like to portray what I hear with a very personal perspective. Mary On A Cross is a song that reflects suffering and pain, like the cross of sins and purification, with strange metaphors and allegories to rock freedom and the dreams of two, besides the sacrifice that at least Mary, paid or did not contemplate before paying.
Nirvana - Rape Me
Esta es una de las canciones más sensibles que he oído de la banda Nirvana. Admito que cuando la comencé a escuchar, no sabía que se refería a un tema tan controversial. Recuerdo que mi profesora de inglés se sorprendió al momento en que le pregunté que significaba la frase "Rape Me", y dudó en serio de que aquello provenía de una canción. Lo cierto es que esta pieza de Nirvana nació como el rechazo a la polémica del estrellato y las duras realidades del abuso sexual. Ambas cosas van de la mano, al menos según lo que el mismo vocalista de la banda, el fallecido Kurt Cobain, talló en la lírica. Después que entiendes su significado, es difícil oírla de la misma manera. Quizás se trata de, en cierta forma, simpatizar con un tema tan sensible a través de la música.
Rape Me fue la primera canción que me enganchó de la banda, al principio más por su composición musical que por su letra. Ahora, en un gusto que se divide de manera ecuánime entre ambos elementos.
This is one of the most sensitive songs I've heard from the band Nirvana. I admit that when I started listening to it, I didn't know that it referred to such a controversial topic. I remember my English teacher was surprised when I asked her what the phrase "Rape Me" meant, and she seriously doubted that it came from a song. The truth is that this Nirvana piece was born as a rejection of the controversy of stardom and the harsh realities of sexual abuse. The two go hand in hand, at least according to what the band's lead singer himself, the late Kurt Cobain, carved into the lyrics. After you understand its meaning, it's hard to hear it the same way. Perhaps it's about, in a way, sympathizing with such a sensitive subject through music.
Rape Me was the first song that hooked me from the band, at first more for its musical composition than its lyrics. Now, in a taste that is evenly split between the two elements.
R.E.M - Losing my Religion
Esta es la única canción de R.E.M que he logrado escuchar y que me ha encantado por su crítica al existencialismo y otros mensajes evidentes. En el plano artístico, la música permite esbozar una crítica a la realidad en todos sus focos; lo sé, es simple arte musical, pero con un trasfondo bastante reflexivo, que nos lleva a pensar en cosas fuera de lo común, y a cuestionar algunos visones. La letra de "Losing my Religion" apunta a un mensaje de decepción que no, necesariamente, apunta a la religión. Se trata de un concepto de aislamiento hacia lo que ya no convence, como un amor doloroso o un fracaso abismal.
En ocasiones perdemos nuestra admiración por algo, entonces perdemos esa visión hermosa que teníamos sobre eso. De allí quizás surge la inspiración de la banda para con esta canción, la cual, por su estructura acústica, es bastante hermosa.
This is the only R.E.M. song I have managed to listen to and I loved it for its critique of existentialism and other obvious messages. On the artistic level, the music allows us to outline a criticism of reality in all its focuses; I know, it is simple musical art, but with a quite reflective background, which leads us to think about things out of the ordinary, and to question some visions. The lyrics of "Losing my Religion" point to a message of disappointment that does not necessarily point to religion. It is a concept of isolation towards what is no longer convincing, such as a painful love or an abysmal failure.
Sometimes we lose our admiration for something, and then we lose that beautiful vision we had of it. From there perhaps comes the band's inspiration for this song, which, because of its acoustic structure, is quite beautiful.
AC/DC - Highway to hell
AC/DC es una de mis grandes bandas favoritas; debo reconocer que, al mirar el título de la canción por primera vez, me causó mucho ruido. Luego, al oir la letra de la canción, supe más sobre lo que "Highway to hell" intenta transmitir. No es una canción de "saber vivir" como otras, pues en esta, la vida es un viaje de ida sin retorno en el que lo tomas, o simplemente lo dejas. El tono bastante peculiar de la canción te hace escucharla sin fijarte tanto en la letra, aunque en algún momento te detienes a pensar en que, de manera indirecta, estás citando una manera de vivir sin miedo, porque todos iremos a un mismo lugar... pero al menos en estos términos, prefiero no adjudicar la palabra "infierno", jajaja.
Highway to hell está en mi playlist de "rock para vencer el aburrimiento, XD" y creo que ha sabido ganarse el puesto. Es una canción extraña, lo sé, pero no por eso mala.
AC/DC is one of my favorite big bands; I must admit that, when I first looked at the title of the song, it made a lot of noise to me. Then, when I heard the lyrics of the song, I knew more about what "Highway to hell" was trying to convey. It's not a "know how to live" song like others, for in this one, life is a one-way trip with no return where you either take it or just quit. The rather peculiar tone of the song makes you listen to it without paying so much attention to the lyrics, although at some point you stop to think that, in a roundabout way, you are quoting a way of living without fear, because we are all going to the same place... but at least in these terms, I prefer not to award the word "hell", hahaha.
Highway to hell is on my "rock to beat boredom, XD" playlist and I think it's earned its place. It's a strange song, I know, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

What are the strangest songs you've ever heard? Music is abstract art, which leads us to reflect in ways we never imagined; sometimes under unbridled rhythms and others with quite random lyrics. Even so, it is impossible to detach yourself from the magic that musical art transmits.

Yo cada vez que puedo y me inspiro, hago lo mismo. La música es esencial para mí. Es la compañera ideal e incondicional. Le debo mucho, y me ha hecho feliz innumerable cantidad de veces...
