Needed but not a true necessity

And I had to agree to it.

My daughter recently faced difficulty in her eyes while reading and she wanted me to take her to Lenskart directly, for testing her eye power and get a spec, if necessary and I was not in favor of going to Lenskart to test her eyes, as I am a little old school and prefer traditional eye hospital. The way Lenskart is growing feels like, they are creating a hype in young generation, to feel like wearing a nice spec is an absolute necessity. I have been using a reading glass while working, and I just pick cheap ready to use glasses, because that meets my need and I don't feel like spending a lot just for the look. So we had a deal - if she really needs a spec, then we will consider her request to go to Lenskart, but only if an eye hospital prescribe it.

So I took her to a reputed eye hospital located near to us and they did all kind of tests, not just vision testing. They are pretty genuine (they do not do any marketing to sell their spec) and prescribed a spec for reading, without pushing us to buy from them. But I still could not convince my daughter to buy the spec from their store, because she did not like the look and wanted to buy only from Lenskart. This is a probably because of a generation shift, because they don't like old school like us.

It was not a true necessity to buy from there, but at times, its simply not in our best interest to force on the kids, as we had a deal to be considerate.

Look at her face, how happy she is to go to Lenskart. As this was our first visit to a nearest store, we all helped her to choose from several options, with a price range matching our budget. If you allow kids to buy anything, then they will not think about our pocket, so that's the reason, we have some basic rules to give them flexibility based on our budget only and both the lady and me feel that they must understand and cooperate.

And they do have some nice marketing strategy to pinch your pocket - gold membership, buy 1 get 1 etc and the boy was tempted to get a sun-glass for him using the offer.

Look Papa, there won't be much extra to pay if we go with this offer, bla bla bla - they all convinced me and I was thinking, why these stores are rapidly growing - they know where to hit, a promised feeling to convince us to spend extra.

Now that they have a gold membership, they wanted me to upgrade my spec and get a better one from Lenskart to elevate the look - ok, let's go home now and I will give a second thought later.

Haha nice specs!

I never had glasses till recent years and wondered if the “you are older than 40 now so you need glasses” sentiment was born out of the need to sell more glasses.

Now that I have taken on an eyewear client, I have come around to the notion that glasses are worth investing in because of what they can do for your eye health, AND the fact you always have glasses on and they are a big part of your style/wardrobe.

I too went to get an eye exam/new prescription lately and am buying online because they seem 90% less expensive.

Ah sometimes you just have to accept the kids are 😎 cool haha. Do you remember when you were young liking what your parents didn't? But it is also a good teaching moment too, to tell them how sneaky marketing works ..

Do you remember when you were young liking what your parents didn't?

Well, I would say when we were kid, we didn't have much knowledge and exposure, so whatever parents said, that was always happily accepted, because we always felt, they are the best to guide us. But things are now different - these kids think, we don't know anything :)

Chandni chowk is good hub for cheaper glasses...not in quality terms but price wise. It is a wholesale market, and one get their specs ready in no time. ..also multiple framing option ranging from Rs.100 to Rs 500 so easily one can pocket multiple specs at no cost...these stores is looting hub.

these stores is looting hub

true and now a days the world runs on marketing.

I think you handled this well. Eye health should always come before trends, and it’s good that you insisted on a proper hospital check while still considering her preferences.

At least it brought her joy. She won't feel being left out.

So sorry to really hear about the struggle your daughter is facing regarding her eyes

Whenever possible, you should please your children, my friend, but the idea isn't to fulfill all their wishes. The important thing is that your children are happy, and their happy faces can be seen in the photographs.

What could he do, my friend, was simply to make his children happy, as long as he set limits so they wouldn't go overboard? Perhaps they weren't the most essential things, but sometimes indulging in what we need most helps aesthetically, and aesthetics are a big plus. But also, and from personal experience, I can tell you that when they earn their own money, they'll probably opt for the cheapest options, even if they aren't the most beautiful.
