Pictorialism with a lens (17 photos)

Have you ever tried modifying your lens? For example, flip the front lens 180 degrees. I understand your lens is too expensive and you don't want to compromise its integrity. Then take a simpler lens. For example, Helios 44-2.

I have two of these lenses. These are old Soviet optics from film cameras. Through adapter M-42 it can be installed on any camera. It even fits the full format. And I did it

The results of the experiment are given below (however, above too). Looking ahead, I will say that this option is not for ordinary photography. You do not get a ringing sharpness of the edges of the frame. Only the middle will be relatively sharp. But it can be used to get various interesting effects, especially in backlit when there are glare.

This effect can be used for some scenes. For example, shoot a forest path filled with sunlight.

The amount of blur is highly dependent on the aperture setting. The more the aperture is clamped, the sharper the photo is.

From a relatively simple plot, you can get something mysterious and even fabulous. This is somewhat reminiscent of the paintings of some artists. In a sense, it can be argued that as a result of such shooting we get the style of "pictorialism". At the same time, we do not resort to special post-processing of the photo. They are obtained immediately at the time of photographing.

At the same time, in sunny weather (there is a lot of light), the edges of the image are lighter. Something like light vignetting. Post-processing allows you to create a dark vignette. This is already a matter of taste.

A tightly clamped aperture allows you to get a fairly clear image in the middle of the frame. I deliberately enlarged the middle part of the photo so that you can be convinced of this. And finally, a few shots in which I tried different options for shooting conditions.

I think my experiments did not stop there.

Too neat! Those are like something out of a dream, with most of what is dreamt completely out of focus. Great stuff! I've flipped a lens about before for macro photography, but that's all. I might need to try that too!

That's right, you mentioned the dream correctly, my friend. This is also similar to how our vision works. When we focus on something specific, everything is blurry on the periphery.
If you try this trick, you will get great pleasure from the result))

Interesting effect. The bokeh isn't swirly anymore. I think these can be used in portraits. And when you say you flip the front lens 180 degrees, Do you flip the lens or just the front glass? Because I used to flip the lens and shot macro. ( sorry for my English).

My English is not better))
I turned only the front glass. I don't have an adapter to flip the whole lens yet. But I'll come to this))
Yes, a portrait can turn out to be unusual and interesting. The bokeh is both twisted and somehow altered in its own way. And the glare gives beak-like shapes.
For this version of the lens, it is necessary to select the shooting plots and angles.

It is great playing around with your toy, right :)

Agree ))
I would like to flip the rear window and try to get the result too. You should get some funny bubbles in the frame)

Thanks :)

looks like ur camera was on shrooms :D

...sorry, did not get it

with those lenses it looks like the camera is tripping^^

Fortunately, the camera is fine))

I also love the nature wow..

Very Nice Pictures. The Helios glass layers make the difference? Russian Lenses are legendary. Unfortunately my Sony A7M2 broke in 2019. Very sad about it. I still work with another older Sony with emount. Love these vintage lenses. Specially the work of people who can appreciate it as much as I can.

Glad to see you @yangyanje and thank you for your kind words!
The front lens has a bulge on one side. If you turn it over inside the lens, you get an effect like in my photos. If you can fit this lens onto an old camera van, the effect will still be the same. By the way, it is interesting to shoot mushrooms with this lens))
