Their dark cycle is when they do the most growing. So when you put them in the dark for their last 48 hours, you force the plant to soak up as much of nutrients from the soil as they can. They usually get a decent pump on the buds as compared to just going straight to harvest. When I have done it, I see a lot of trichome production during that last 48 hours as well. I have never cut the stems prior to putting them in the dark though. In my opinion, it may be a bit too late for that type of stress.
