Ivangorod - northern Russian outpost

To protect against the Swedes and Livonians, the Ivangorod fortress was founded in 1492 by decree of Ivan III on the other side of the river from the potentially enemy Narva fortress. The name is given in honor of the founder, Ivan: "I called him the name Ivangorod in his own name."
