Segovia is one of many Spanish historical cities. Just like Ávila, it is in the let’s say mainland part of Spain – the nearest coast, Bay of Biscay, is about 4 hours by car. Speaking about its location, Segovia is in the Meseta central plateau at an altitude of about 1,000 metres above the sea level. Both landscape and architecture hence differ a lot from what you are used to when you go to coastal parts of Spain for summer vacations. By the way, Segovia city centre is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One of the keen reasons is this Roman aqueduct.
Segovia je jedním z mnoha španělských historických měst. Podobně jako Ávila leží relativně daleko od moře – nejblíž je Biskajský záliv, ke kterému pojedete asi 4 hodiny autem. A když už jsme u toho zeměpisu, dodám, že Segovia leží na náhorní plošině Meseta central ve výšce kolem 1 000 metrů nad mořem. Místní architektura i okolí se tak hodně liší od toho, na co jste zvyklí z přímořských letovisek a letních prázdnin. A mimochodem, Segovia je na seznamu světových památek UNESCO. Jedním z hlavních důvodů pro zařazení na seznam je tenhle římský aquadukt. Češi najdou na konci článku bonus.**
In total, the aqueduct is almost 17 kilometres long and its most elevated point is almost 29 metres above the ground. Nowadays, it crosses the main square and is sort of a Segovian trademark, even though there are other important landmarks.
Akvadukt je skoro 17 kilometrů dlouhý a jeho nejvyšší bod je téměř 29 metrů nad zemí. Dnes prochází hlavním náměstím a stalo se z něj hlavní turistické lákadlo, i když jsou v Segovii i další zajímavé památky.
The niche and a statue of Virgin Mary is obviously not genuine, it comes from the times of Los Reyes Católicos, the Catholic monarchs.

Notice the snowy mountain in the background. There are several ski resorts nearby, we passed by one or two while driving from Madrid.

A bonus pro Čechy? Hned za rohem od katedrály je bar Rubi, který, věřte nebo ne, má na čepu Primátora, konkrétně APU. Obvykle mají i vlastní pivo, ale bohužel zrovna došlo...
Thanks for sharing this. The local aqueduct and the castle seem in remarkably good condition. Looking at these very well maintained old structures makes me kind of sad sometimes when I try to picture the buildings of today in like 2000 years down the road. I do not think they will age as well as the roman buildings did.
