Roadside Tree Rotation

Camera Rotation Light Painting of a Fallen Tree

During my trip to South Africa I did not have so much time to go after Light Painting, I only had the chance for two night-shots. Here you are going to see the second main feature night photograph.

Light Painting in Africa is not as simple as you may think coming from the States or Europe. The first thing you must do is check if any predators are in the area. Is this area protected from Lions, Leopards, or Buffalos?

Thani-Zimbi

At the Thani-Zimbi near the Marakele National Park, there are only friendly animals around. That made me feel safe to get out at night and not think I'd be killed right after I turn off the flashlight.

Tree Rotation

During my trip to South Africa I did not have so much time to go after Light Painting, I only had the chance for two night-shots. Here you going to see the second main feature night photograph.

What were the settings?

The images you see are 174 seconds-long single-exposure time photographs. The camera was set to ISO 800 and the Laowa 12mm Zero D F2.8 Lens was set to F4.

Location, Location, Location!

Just as in real estate it's all about Location. If you are a really good Lightpainter you can do it in the kitchen 365 a year. I know one like that! I feel often insecure so I need to compensate with a cool location. So any tree is not good enough. When I saw this one when we entered the property I thought this might help me. The shot is not actually as good as I hoped but since I was by myself here that was what I could do here. 😎

Also ist kein Baum gut genug.

Here you see my first shot of the spot. Just to get an impression and feeling about Light sources and the environment. Just finding the balance was important before I start practicing a camera rotation.

Since I was able to work with a super cool wide angle lens, the LAOWA 12mm could be quite close to the object of desire. Less running around with the lights!

Weniger Laufen!

For this shot, I had a simple rotation tool like the on the right side.

Something missing.

At first, I started testing different colors. Then I realized that I need to add something more to make the image pop. A human always makes it more interesting. Since I was alone I needed to put myself in, but only as a silhouette.

That's what you see in the featured shot.

Irgendetwas fehlt.

Mich sieht man also im Featured Shot.

When I dropped my flashlight the car also got some light, so quickly took photos with the phone. Looked kind of cool.

Camera Rotation is what?

As I have shared with you in many of my posts about Camera Rotation. Yes, it is just what the name suggests. The camera is being rotated during the exposure, sometimes in steps sometimes in a continuous motion while doing so I also light up the scene.

Prinzip Kamera Rotation Light Painting?

This is the setup I used for this shot.

Very cool, and yes… you are right. Never thought about the potential dangers in Africa in the dark. It makes it a bit different than anywhere else.
Great work. 👋🏻😎 have a wonderful day today!

Africa vs. Australia

I had one night shot where I had a guy with a shotgun protecting me. But then we had two lions approaching, one from the right and the other from the left. We never saw them but the roar was frightening. Even the guide said we shall leave the area.
In Australia, the dangers are of a different kind, you'll never really see what's going to come after you. The spiders and snakes come quiet at night. For some reason, I was more oblivious to those dangers. 😎

Wow… scary to say the least especially when one isn’t used to that.
The spiders and snakes are a no no for me 😳 hahaha 🤣
Thanks for sharing that with me @gunnarheilmann 😃
Have a great day further!

Truly compelling artistic works.

Glad you like it. Happy about any support.

Awesome! Cheers

Thank you for your comment 😎
Glad you like it!

Sehr geil Gunnar.
