Wanderlust For The Bush
All the places I've wandered, it's the bush of Africa that I never tire of, drop me off anywhere, wildlife in natural surroundings it is more fascinating than all the high streets of the world.
One never stops learning since knowledge on each species ranges far and wide. When young we ran barefoot today most go out in hiking boots, we have forgotten our animal instinct in going quietly.
People tend to give you the evil eye when you tell them to purchase soaps, shampoo scent free, do no wear anything with perfume, it is for very good reason, power of scent will alert animals long before you see them, they smell you.
Now I'm not saying it's ideal, it helps, short of rolling in a mud bath and running around naked between the thorn bushes, it simply might allow more time for a better sighting when planning the outing.
All animals throughout have sensitive sophisticated noses, consider the elephant is able to find water miles away, relying on the nose to find food, or sexual readiness of mating partners.
We sure have lost so much becoming urbanized, animals smell fear on you as well, good reminder!
Now when going out officially/specifically photographing insects, birds or animals, water or dry land, something to ponder is how close you will get wearing perfume after an early morning shower, putting on fancy dress when going out in the bush washed and rinsed in your favourite scented laundry soaps.
Human sense of smell leans more toward memories or emotion of flowers and spices, venturing with wanderlust dissipates quickly as everything disperses in front of your eyes.
My definition of wanderlust is to go slowly, roam around delighting in the pleasures nature offers near or far. Thanks for visiting and hopefully learning a little about how I think before embarking on holidays knowing where my destination is.

Thought for Today: "Examine what is said, not him who speaks." - African Proverb

Hey there
First of all, I really appreciate your bravery because I can't go in a wild full of animals.
Weren't there any harmful animals like lion, tiger or leopards..
And one thing more, from now on I won't even use scent while visiting a local zoo (lol).
These areas do take guided foot tours through, there are lion and leopards although the hippo takes more human lives than most.
Thanks for visiting and kind comment in learning something !LOLZ
ohh its my first time to know that elephant has a strong sense of smell..thanks for sharing
Elephant move silently through the bush rumbling, matriarch elephant normally oldest and wisest woman of the group will guide the family to water able to smell from 12 kilometers away (10 miles), also defends and knows where food source is.
Passed on from generation to generation these gentle giants can teach us a thing or two about being a family united. !LUV

That's why I always put a lot of perfume on when I'm alone in the mountains - the bears and the wolfs will smell me and flee, because someone who smells that bad cannot taste good 😁
But now seriously ... I wouldn't roll in mud and run around naked, but when I sometimes meet tourists during a hike I wonder why they smell as if they just had left a perfume store.
The shepherd whom I met in the Dolomites smelled from sweat and sheep and he was one of the kindest people I've met in quite a while.
When I was young my preferred foot wear was to wear no shoes 😉
Great post, Joan, and awesome photos - I love the Serval cat 😊

How you tempt fate !LOLZ bears and wolves might see it at as spicy meal, marinated ready for taster....
Strange when young we ran around barefoot never gave thought to stepping onto snakes, now guys don't go out into bush without over the ankle high hiking boots.
Now we over bush fetish with city slickers arriving directly from perfume stores in outrageous outfits talking to be heard, how things have changed!
!LUV another new dawn, another new day, hope it all goes great up North.
!PIZZA munch for lunch if at work once again...

We don't have that many (venomous) snakes here, but a few weeks ago while walking straight up a hill in the Dolomites, I disturbed a huge black snake that was sunbathing and was glad that I've had my hiking boots on, because this one was very venomous 😅
You should go for a hike in the Dolomites - so many people and sometimes you think you are in a fashion show 🤣

Most visit the mountains, lay around the swimming pool, yes fashion parade...
Snakes we always walk with a stick to hit the bush to warn snakes, or use it like pole vault to escape should they be too close 😁
!LUV the empty hikes not many venture out over here....

It was a busy week and after a little hike yesterday, I'm having a lazy Sunday.
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday Joan 😊 🌞

What nice pictures, I really liked the variety of animals there, reminded me a lot of those I usually see in nature documentaries.
Living in the bush is like a nature documentary, exclusively educational once you into enjoy the time.

Rather we go hiking now wearing perfumes for our saftey.
Talk about hiking, our world us so fancy now walking barefoot is no longer anthing as we spend on fancy hiking shoes and bags.
Have a wonderful Sunday evening
Attract your fate in preference to getting too close, you would never know how close you were, when you were not looking.
We ran around barefoot for years, still prefer feeling the grass between my toes. Which family afforded shoes around the garden or playing in veld with friends?
!LUV and best of luck with the week ahead, hope not too grueling!

(no space) to get help on Hive. InfoI don't recall any of my friends or myself having shoes on as we play around, you will find me coming home most of the time dirty.
My day started off promising with my niece walking me around. Hopefully, I will make the intended progress this week.
No we had school and Sunday shoes for church, at home your feet had the freedom on the soil to enjoy.
Trust you get organized, able to get results relatively quickly. Being with someone who knows the streets should help somewhat.
It does shame she is doing all she can for her uncle's success.
I owe her big time.
No eletricity for over 24 hours, thankfully I my power bank helping my device to stay on. Not sure when the power will come on.
And we cry about scheduled loadshedding in SA.
I will settle for SA right now!
Yikes Africa is a problem with electricity, no forward planning alas! Hope you have power soon to complete the tasks you have in the city soon.
Africa is a problem and Nigeria is a bigger problem. I am not in the mood for writing about the crap I've been encountering, wait for it, I will write one of these days. What a shithole my country is, Trump was right in referring to it as a shithole.
Thanks kindly @ladiesofhive greatly appreciated.
What a variety of our smaller brothers! Serval is funny, I heard and saw that someone keeps them as house cats. And what happened to the zebra in the photo, did it fall?😄 Great photos and a walk in nature.
Serval appeared in hunting mode, I believe some try keep wild cats as pets which is crazy!
Zebra was enjoying a back scratch using the hump in middle of road to his full advantage !LOLZ funniest photo I have ever captured seeing this behavior.
Thanks for visit and have a great week.
This is beautiful ❤️ nice shot, but how do you get close to this animals, because I'm afraid already.
Large tracts of land in South Africa protected for wildlife to enjoy living as they should. It is at your own risk to walk around, one needs to know a little about being alert.
!LUV thanks for comment and have a wonderful day.

Wonderful post. I agree with you, nature and the bushveld is seriously the best place to be. I like the link you made between memory and smell. So true. We always remember something when we smell a scent. Rosemary always takes me back to childhood memories of playing beside a massive rosemary bush. Thanks for sharing your stunning photographs
Loved the smell early mornings of damp soil, when out playing in the veld Kakiebos collecting for our dogs kennel to put under and inside to rid fleas and mosquitos bothering them.
Kakiebos (Khaki bush) foot soak also good for fungus, used on farms for penned animals, something my Dad learned when young living on a small farm.
It really sounds idyllic. Would love to spend so much time in nature. It really makes one think about one’s life choices. Concrete jungle and a static live vs. actual jungle and moving around. Money is always the problem. And all that local knowledge would have been immensely important.
We lived suburban, my Dad always had us in the garden doing something, the knowledge he imparted from his childhood has stood me in good stead many times.
That is the goal of my own meanderings and doings in the garden. To cultivate knowledge and pass it on. Some people are receptive to it, others not so much. Finding like-minded people are central.
Gogos from various tribes will have knowledge once you know them will share.
I really want to get in touch with these people! Would love to write down their knowledge and recipes so that we can have it more readily available!
i get the feeling you live in a zoo or a safari park, so many animals to see and appreciate
We travel to get to places where animals roam free, always entertaining!
yes indeedy!
You have a wonderful animal world. You need to make BBC films 😂
We are spoiled with variety, plenty of videos out there by professionals, mine are purely for fun 🙃
Wonderful photos of the animals, Joan. Their sense of smell is so much stronger than humans.
They use all, something we humans now forgetting, that feeling when the hair stands on the back of your neck !LOLZ
