My wife and I found a few neat spots in Sao Jorge in the late afternoon early evenings of our vacation in the Azores. We stopped for a few photoshoots at these locations to take pictures of the landscapes and of each other. The weather and lighting at both, along with the rough ocean water and black lava rock, all combined to create a cool moody vibe to the photos. Let's take a look!
The first location was spotted on day two around dinner time. The location was right outside of our restaurant. That night we had finished our dinner quite early and decided to take a brief walk around outside before heading back to our airbnb for the evening.
In the photo above the restaurant was located just off to the right of the small house, which was not actually a house, and our vehicle was parked right beside it.
There was a red shale path in that area that followed the black lava rocks along the waters edge. We wound our way through looking out over the ocean and the choppy water.
A lot of the photos that I took are very similar but it was such a great spot and the lighting was so interesting. You know me by now, I take a lot of pictures.
The black lava rock was my favorite part of the island and definitely a unique characteristic of it. One of its "themes."
Its probably the one thing that stands out most for me in my memories of Sao Jorge.
This evening was particularly good for photos. It was cloudy but the lighting was great and the air was clear of moisture so I wasn't getting that grainy effect that you sometimes see in pictures when the humidity is very high.
Okay moving onto another location and a different day.
On the last day of the trip before reaching the small town of Topo, we found another ocean swimming hole. They are all over the island.
This was the best one that we saw on our vacation because it was the least man made and appeared the most natural.
There were still cement walls and railing and stairs and everything that the others had, but they were all incorporated into the natural landscape, which made them less noticeable than some of the other sites.
The day was windy and the waves were crashing into the cement barriers and spilling over into the pool creating a waterfall effect. In the picture above, the waterfall is actually a cement walking path that we couldn't walk across because of the waves. We probably would have been knocked off by the rough water had we tried.
You can't really see the drama from the still photos but above is a shot of me jumping back from a wave splashing into me. You can also just make out the island of Pico in the background of the picture as well. The mountain is hidden in cloud cover unfortunately.
We hung out at this site for quite a while.
Like the other location we had great lighting that day and the photos gave us that moody vibe again.
I don't have any else to say so I'll end the post here. Its an abrubt ending but ive never been good at concluding paragraphs. So until next time, thanks for stopping by.
