Hello fellow Hivers! This is my very first post on the Photography community and in it I will be sharing with you pictures of some fascinating little creatures from the jungle of Peru. Insects are by far the most successful organisms on the earth, representing about 40% of all living beings! These stunning creatures have conquered all types of habitats on the planet except for the frozen poles. The Amazon rainforest is believed to be home to more than 2.5 million species of insects!

Hola queridos Hivers!

We begin with the queen of the spiders, the tarantula!

Despite their creepy looks, tarantulas are not dangerous for us humans. As all spiders, they do bite and they do have venom but the latter is weak and far from threatening for our health.

The photographs are taken at nighttime, with the use of flash. Tarantulas are nocturnal hunters, feeding primarily on insects.

Tarantulas do not build webs but they do make silk, which is what you're seeing in the picture. They use it to hide from predators.

Next comes the group of grasshoppers.

Luego viene el grupo de los saltamontes.

until it got tired and started feeding on my yuca. Grasshoppers are exclusively herbivores.

Look how ornamented this one is. I love the collar around its neck.

Are you familiar with the stick insects? also known as Phasmids. They're most commonly found in tropical regions.

Doesn't it look like a green bean?!

No parece a una judía verde?!

These two lovers did not seem at all disturbed by my camera lens.

This cartoon-looking stick bug is one of my absolute favorite bug encounters!

We hung out for quite a while and he was so kind as to offer me a variety of poses.

This group of insects is also called walking sticks. They resemble sticks to an impressive extent!

Cockroaches must be my least favourite creatures on planet Earth. When we're talking about the cockroaches that live in the Amazon, then the dimensions are of a whole different level..!

I photographed this cockroach through a piece of a plastic bottle in which I had it trapped in order to remove it from my room.

As despicable as they might be, I gotta say that I really like their matt colour.

Butterflies on the other hand are certainly a rather likable group of insects.

Many butterflies have markings on their wings known as false eyespots. They are big and colorful so as to discourage preditors from making an attack, or alternatively they make them aim for parts of the butterfly's body that are not so essential for their survival.
