Now that's when the magic of nature happens, as the mist wets the land and one or two days later, the blazing sun allows a strong wind to blow the damp off the land up the mountain, so that the mountain can form its own clouds when the cold damp air meets the hot atmosphere above the mountain peaks. Amazing to watch!

Travel from Oudtshoorn to George dropped through cloud, what an experience watching it tumble perhaps an up-draft. Spectacular scene to watch from the hot cloud free drive straight into what felt like the edge of the world.

Army days, we travelled that route a lot, and even road marched that route. The times that you are talking about, we called it sailing into the clouds. Lovely sights.

Apt description, went down that pass a couple of times by car and train, each experience was different.
Outeniqua pass is great, but Swartberg pass in the other direction takes the cake.
Will get there one day soon I hope, life is on the move in 2024.....
