Walking in the Fields - Part 2: Thistles

in Photography Lovers2 years ago (edited)

If you missed it you can read Part 1 where I look at some of the other wildflowers I found on my walk.

One of the recurring plants in my walk was the various thistle species. I'll take you through what I found.

We consider the Creeping Thistle (Cirsium arvense) a noxious weed in the UK. It spreads through its roots, known as "spreading rhizomatically"; additionally will spread through wind-distributed seeds.

The Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), on the other hand, is an essential medicinal crop, widely introduced in Europe during colonial times. The Milk Thistle can be used to treat a range of conditions affecting the internal organs - it's essential to consult with your healthcare practitioner if you are considering using any herbal remedy.

These Teasels (_Dipsacus fullonum) are essential plants for birds frequently seen perching on the tall spikes safe from ground predators while teasing seeds out of the seed head.

The Teasel is not a proper thistle, although sometimes called a Donkey's thistle - these plants are great for interest well into the autumn as the brown heads stay around once the plant has died back.

Finally, I found this abandoned bike, propped up against a fence. Hopefully, I can find someone to claim it.

Thistles are important polinators for our ecosystem, they may need to be controlled however to protect native species. They bring rare colour to the fields of green and yellow and, for me, are a delight.

I hope you enjoyed my facts and photos; all work and views are my own. I greatly appreciate it if I have earned your vote, subscription, or follow.

Thistles are pretty abundant here in Sweden as well. That was some cool info on them too. Hope they come back for their sweet bike. hahaha Awesome shots!

Thistles are becoming more common in the UK as our climate warms up, still haven't found an owner of the bike - although someone did ask if it had a theft protection mark, which I didn't think of at the time.

Usually, when bikes are left like that here it's after they have been stolen and dumped off. Either that... or they are just really bad at parking. hahaha

I did wonder if that might be the case, the tire is off the rim on the front so it could be that it was stolen for a joy ride through the fields. I might just head back and get the exact location from GPS and send the picture to the police - there is a slim chance they will match it up against a reported crime.

I really like thistles and there are quite a lot around our way. In fact we’ve one or two that have self seeded themselves in the front garden. Just been talking to @traisto about writing garden journals. I’m going to keep one and shall do some posts.

Garden posts would be great, looking forward to reading them :)

That's a beautiful take! I love to use the macro lens to capture the detail and the colors.

Thank you for the encouragement; I need to wait for better light to take the 70mm macro lens out shadows it's difficult to get the right shot in direct sunshine and it looks like we have a lot of that at the moment :)

Do you use a camera or a cell phone? I'm pretty comfortable with my LG phone, but with a camera, the results will be much better

I use a Sony A6600 APS-C camera, which is on the upper end of Sony's "inexpensive" cameras, with a Sigma 70mm Macro Lens to get shots like this:

Awesome!🤯🤯😎
