Steel wool in photography is by now a well known technique. But the most common way to use it is spinning it around and capturing the flying sparks using a long exposure. While this is spectacular the first time you do it, it sort of always produces the same kind of photo just with a different background. So in my opinion it is the most boring way to use steel wool.
Stahlwolle in der Fotografie ist mittlerweile recht bekannt. Allerdings ist die übliche Anwendung die Stahlwolle im Kreis zu wirbeln und die fliegenden Funken in einer Langzeitbelichtung aufzunehmen. Zwar ist das recht spektakulär das erste mal wenn man es macht, allerdings kommen dabei mehr oder weniger immer die gleichen Bilder raus, nur mit einem anderen Hintergrund. Daher finde ich ist das die langweiligste Möglichkeit wie man Stahlwolle benutzen kann.
So to find new ways to use steel wool I tried out using it as a primary element in a photo. Using a small figurine here a fluffy batch of steel wool was hung up on fine wires and lit up. This produced quite a nice effect that looks like the mage casts a spectacular spell.
Um andere Effekte zu finden habe ich probiert die Stahlwolle selbst als Hauptelement in ein Foto einzubinden. Mit einer kleinen Figur und einen fluffigen Knäul Stahlwolle an feinen Drähten auf gehangen konnte ich diesen interessanten Effekt erzeugen der so wirkt als wenn der Magier einen starken Zauberspruch benutzt.
Taking it one step further I thought about using tripod and lens swap techniques to get a larger effect in a photo. When I had a chance to work in a huge factory hall I used that to test out this concept to really give it some scale. This was created by putting a ball of steel wool on the ground and letting it burn, then changing lens and tripod for the final scene and lighting the hall as if the light was coming from the big fireball.
Um das ganze noch einen Schritt weiter zu treiben habe ich überlegt Stativ und Objektiv Wechsel Techniken mit einzubinden. Als ich mal die Chance hatte in einer großen Fabrikhalle zu arbeiten habe ich die Chance genutzt das Konzept mal zu testen. Dieses Foto wurde erstellt in dem erst ein kleiner Ball Stahlwolle auf dem Boden abgebrannt wurde. Danach wurde das Objektiv und Stativ für die endgültige Szene gewechselt und die Halle so beleuchtet als wenn das Licht von den riesigen Feuerball kommt.
On a later occasion I used the same technique to create a burning pillar inside an old abandoned bathhouse. This really showed that I can do some quite interesting things using this combination of techniques.
An einen weiteren Abend habe ich die gleiche Technik benutzt um eine riesige Flammensäule in einen alten Badehaus zu erschaffen. Das hat mit endgültig gezeigt das man mit dieser Kombination von Techniken sehr beeindruckende Ergebnisse erschaffen kann.
Playing with the shape of the steel wool I could even create a fire demon that wanted a talk with some friends who joined me on that evening.
Durch Spielereien mit der Form der Stahlwolle konnte ich auch einen Feuer Dämonen beschwören der sich mit ein paar Freunden unterhalten wollte die mich an dem Abend begleitet haben.
Evolving these techniques and also using stencils enabled me to let a rock band fight a dragon and a lot of other fun stuff like I have already shown in previous posts.
I hope I was able to show you some interesting new ways how steel wool can be used in long exposures.
Als Weiterentwicklung und Kombination mit Schablonen konnte ich dann auch eine Rock Band gegen einen Drachen kämpfen lassen und andere Effekte erzeugen die ich bereits in meinen vorherigen Posts gezeigt habe.
Ich hoffe ich konnte euch ein paar interessante Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für Stahlwolle zeigen.

had to admit, never thought about lens swapping. I think i do understand the concept of it. changing lenses to change focal length in what is essentially a one exposure that is kinda a two exposures :)
could you do it with a zoom lens that has a decent range? for example 55-250.
Yes the main reason is to have different focal lenses. The steel wool on the ground is basically a macro shot or very close to it and the scene is a wide angle shot. So to get that in one I switched the lens mid exposure. And yes, a single exposure, just need to make sure it is very dark when switching the lens. Also some cameras don't like it if you take off the lens, but using analogue lenses usually circumvents that.
It does work with a toom too, did that already, but problem there is getting the focus right. You can use some markers on the dial but it happens quite often that you miss it a bit and some parts are out of focus. So switching lens and locking to focus ring with some tape is way easier.

Ich mag ja den Feuergolem besonders, ansonsten bin ich ja kein Freund der Stahlwolle, wegen der Überreste die bleiben und kleinen Tieren in die Pfoten schneiden.
Das ist ja der Vorteil von der Technik. Ist alles schön auf einer schwarzen Platte von der ich die verbrannten Reste dann immer in eine Plastiktüte packe damit nichts zurück bleibt.
Das ist sehr lobenswert.
