Fresh Truckee Snow!

Yes, I'm excited about the snow this year. We are way behind schedule on the amount of it that we have received. I shouldn't complain after last year's incredible amount of snow that we got. It was a bit much last year... Last night, it started up again so I grabbed the camera and headed down to Downtown Truckee to try to get more Christmas holiday themed photos. Unfortunately, it was mix of rain and snow in Downtown and there wasn't much snow on the ground, but I ended up with this shot of a favorite little art gallery down there anyway. The Piper Gallery exhibits all paintings and sculptures, no photography, but I still love checking out the work there anyway.

Shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. ISO 3200, a lens aperture of f/4.0, and it was a handheld 1/30 second exposure. The lens image stabilization was on, and Photoshop's AI noise reduction was used as ISO 3200 produces a lot of digital noise with this camera.

When I woke up this morning, we actually had a little layer of snow around town. It was looking great! Definitely not a large snow storm, but it was nice to see that little bit of white layer on the ground. Everything looks so clean, crisp, and photogenic. So I took a short walk with the camera, across the street to Donner Lake here in Truckee, California.

These were both also shot with the Canon 5DS R and the 24-105mm lens. A much lower ISO of 200 was used. Both were 1/200 second handheld shots, and both had small lens apertures.

The top shot of the dock is a classic Donner look, I like including that sunburst for a little added visual interest. The small lens aperture of f/20 helps create the star effect to the sunburst. I liked the bottom shot of the shoreline and Donner Summit because of the somewhat repetitive patterns to the little lake waves, the shoreline, and the clouds. In my opinion, it created a visual pleasing look.

Yup, I enjoy that snow! We're supposed to get more tonight. Fingers crossed that it will actually be a decent amount but the forecast isn't looking good for that.

At first I thought the waves in the photo were frozen. Ice. But I looked closer and realized that I was mistaken.

The beauty of photography. I can freeze time!

The Time Lord))

Nice shot of the gallery. The lighting is really cool. No snow of the ground here either but we are at low elevations so snow cover is usually later than where you are I think.

Thanks @steven-patrick! Fortunately, all of our local ski resorts got snow instead of the rain lat night. The resorts are very important to our economy... But the snow in town is important to my wellbeing! Hope you guys also get some soon.

I confirm that the photo of the pontoon is really very beautiful with the sun as a star. I sometimes have the same effect. But the harmony between the white of the snow and the sun in the same tone makes the image even more beautiful.

Glad you like that one! The snow and a sunburst are always a great look.

As a Californian I especially appreciate these!

Glad to hear that @deeanndmathews!!! It's a crazy little part of California up here, but I love it! Born and raised in LA, been in Truckee for 21 years.

I'm down in San Francisco ... this from my walk from the top of Buena Vista Hill, looking north toward San Francisco Bay...

... I'm forever enjoying photos in hills and mountains! I have been to the Sierras in September, and still dream of spending an autumn there ... your photos are the stuff of dreams!

Thank you! I'm usually in the Bay area once or twice a year for photoshoots. Beautiful area as well, nice view! Autumn/October is magical up here when the aspen trees start turning yellow and orange. I would highly recommend making dream that happen!

I was up there in late September for a conference and had a feeling October was the time ... thanks for the heads up!

Cool snow photos ☃️⛄👌👌🦊 ... I have it lot also 😋👌👌👌

Thank you! Looks like you might have us beat for snow totals...

And I fill get it soon more :)) ... If you want I can send some what E-mail so you can have more :)))

Yes! The sun burst, it made that shot way better and dramatic. Dramatic can be great sometimes. :D

Well done!

I wish I could just be excited by the snow like you but we don’t get to see snows here…
The pictures are nice though

Since I was born, I am still yet to experience what it means to have a weather this is full of snow. Quite rare for me

Within such a season, I myself am very fond of living in such a place where it snows and has such beautiful and scenic views.
