🇬🇧 Our motorcycle road trip through South America led us to revisit the Sud Lípez, located in the far southwest of Bolivia. It is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and otherworldly regions on the South American continent. At over 4,000 metres above sea level, this remote territory is part of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve and concentrates some of the most photogenic landscapes in the world. Here, silence is absolute, the wind reigns supreme and the light gives the mountains, lagoons and deserts an uncommon intensity. The colours change at every kilometre. My previous visit was 25 years ago, and I was afraid to find a place overwhelmed by tourism and stripped of its soul. There are indeed more visitors than before, but not only is it not massive, they also all travel with agencies and visit the same places. Given the size of the Sud Lípez, it is easy to get off the beaten track.

C’est sans doute l’une des régions les plus spectaculaires et les plus irréelles du continent sud-américain. À plus de 4 000 mètres d’altitude, ce territoire isolé fait partie de la réserve nationale de faune andine Eduardo Avaroa et concentre certains des paysages les plus photogéniques du monde. Ici, le silence est total, le vent est roi et la lumière donne aux montagnes, lagunes et déserts une intensité peu fréquente. Les couleurs se réinventent à chaque kilomètre parcouru. Ma précédente visite date d’il y a 25 ans et j’avais peur de trouver une zone envahie par le tourisme et qui aurait perdu son âme. Il y a effectivement plus de visiteurs qu’avant mais non seulement ce n’est pas massif mais en plus ils passent tous par des agences et visitent les mêmes endroits. Vu la taille du Sud Lípez il est facile de sortir des sentiers battus.

Es sin duda una de las regiones más espectaculares y surreales del continente sudamericano. A más de 4 000 metros de altitud, este territorio aislado forma parte de la Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa y concentra algunos de los paisajes más fotogénicos del mundo. Aquí, el silencio es total, el viento es el rey y la luz otorga a las montañas, lagunas y desiertos una intensidad poco habitual. Los colores cambian a cada kilómetro. Mi visita anterior fue hace 25 años y temía encontrar una zona invadida por el turismo y que hubiera perdido su alma. Efectivamente hay más visitantes que antes, pero no es masivo y además todos viajan con agencias y visitan los mismos lugares. Dado el tamaño del Sud Lípez es fácil salirse de los caminos más transitados.

🇬🇧 The region is famous for its impossibly coloured lagoons, the best known being Laguna Colorada and Laguna Verde. The first, a deep red, owes its colour to sediments and micro-organisms that thrive in its waters. It is also home to large colonies of flamingos, which turn it into a living painting whenever the wind settles. Laguna Verde, meanwhile, takes on a striking emerald green, especially when the sun is high and the suspended minerals reflect the light. These lakes seem to have been pulled from a dream and contrast with the harshness of the climate, where night-time temperatures can drop extremely low even in the austral summer. As an example, we experienced minus ten degrees when crossing a 5,000-metre pass to visit some geysers.

La première, d’un rouge profond, doit sa couleur aux sédiments et aux micro-organismes qui s’y développent. Elle abrite également de grandes colonies de flamants roses qui la transforment en tableau vivant dès que le vent se calme. La Laguna Verde, quant à elle, se pare d’un vert émeraude éclatant, surtout lorsque le soleil est haut et que les minéraux en suspension réfléchissent la lumière. Ces lacs semblent sortis d’un rêve et contrastent avec la rudesse du climat, où les températures nocturnes peuvent descendre très bas même en été austral. À titre d’exemple nous avons eu moins dix degrés en passant un col à 5 000 mètres pour aller voir des geysers.

La primera, de un rojo intenso, debe su tonalidad a los sedimentos y a los microorganismos que prosperan en sus aguas. También alberga grandes colonias de flamencos, que la convierten en un cuadro viviente cuando el viento se calma. La Laguna Verde, por su parte, adquiere un verde esmeralda brillante, sobre todo cuando el sol está alto y los minerales en suspensión reflejan la luz. Estos lagos parecen sacados de un sueño y contrastan con la dureza del clima, donde las temperaturas nocturnas pueden caer muy bajo incluso en verano austral. Como ejemplo, tuvimos menos diez grados al cruzar un paso a 5 000 metros para ir a ver géiseres.

🇬🇧 The Sud Lípez is also a land of geological extremes. Volcanic formations are everywhere, including the majestic Licancabur, the emblematic volcano that dominates the horizon. Further on, the Salvador Dalí Desert reveals surreal landscapes reminiscent of the Catalan painter’s works. Isolated rocks sculpted by the wind rise in the middle of a vast and silent desert. The Arbol de Piedra, one of the best-known formations, looks like a petrified tree torn from time. This region gives the impression that nature has enjoyed experimenting, playing with shapes and colours.

🇫🇷 Le Sud Lípez est aussi une terre d’extrêmes géologiques. Les formations volcaniques y sont omniprésentes, avec notamment le majestueux Licancabur, volcan emblématique qui domine l’horizon. Plus loin, le désert de Salvador Dalí dévoile des paysages surréalistes évoquant les toiles du peintre catalan. Des roches isolées, sculptées par le vent, se dressent au milieu d’un désert immense et silencieux. L’Arbol de Piedra, l’une des formations les plus connues, ressemble à un arbre pétrifié arraché au temps. Cette région donne l’impression que la nature a pris plaisir à expérimenter, à jouer avec les formes et les couleurs.

🇪🇸 El Sud Lípez es también una tierra de extremos geológicos. Las formaciones volcánicas están por todas partes, incluido el majestuoso Licancabur, el volcán emblemático que domina el horizonte. Más adelante, el desierto de Salvador Dalí revela paisajes surrealistas que recuerdan a las obras del pintor catalán. Rocas aisladas, esculpidas por el viento, se alzan en medio de un desierto vasto y silencioso. El Árbol de Piedra, una de las formaciones más conocidas, parece un árbol petrificado arrancado del tiempo. 🇬🇧 Beyond the landscapes, the Sud Lípez is also a place where life is rare but precious. Vicuñas, viscachas and Andean foxes have found refuge here, as have numerous bird species adapted to the extreme conditions. Human communities are scattered, most living from llama herding and quinoa production. Their way of life is simple, shaped by altitude and harsh weather, yet enriched by a deep cultural heritage. Hospitality is warm, a rule of life for the inhabitants that contrasts with the severity of the surrounding desert. It is the kind of place where everyone knows that sooner or later one needs others.

🇫🇷 Au-delà des paysages, le Sud Lípez est également un territoire où la vie se fait rare mais précieuse. Les vigognes, les viscaches et les renards andins y ont trouvé refuge, tout comme de nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux adaptées aux conditions extrêmes. Les communautés humaines sont dispersées, vivant pour la plupart de l’élevage de lamas et de la production de quinoa. Le mode de vie y est simple, façonné par l’altitude et la rigueur du climat, mais accompagné d’une grande richesse culturelle. L’hospitalité est chaleureuse, une règle de vie pour les habitants qui contraste avec la rudesse du désert environnant. Le genre d’endroit où chacun sait qu’un jour ou l’autre on a besoin des autres.

🇪🇸 Más allá de los paisajes, el Sud Lípez es también un territorio donde la vida es escasa pero valiosa. Las vicuñas, las vizcachas y los zorros andinos han encontrado refugio aquí, al igual que numerosas especies de aves adaptadas a las condiciones extremas. Las comunidades humanas están dispersas y viven en su mayoría de la cría de llamas y de la producción de quinoa. Su modo de vida es sencillo, moldeado por la altitud y la dureza del clima, pero acompañado de una gran riqueza cultural. La hospitalidad es cálida, una norma de vida para los habitantes que contrasta con la rudeza del desierto circundante. You can approach it with some patience and a few carrots while it enjoys the sun. 🇫🇷 La viscaye est un animal extrêmement sympathique et assez confiant. 🇬🇧 Exploring the Sud Lípez means accepting to step out of one’s comfort zone. The tracks are dusty, the distances long and the accommodations often basic. Yet every effort is rewarded with constant wonder. Whether it is a sunrise over the Laguna Colorada, a bath in natural hot springs under a clear sky or a starry night where the Milky Way seems within reach, each moment leaves a lasting impression. The Sud Lípez is not just a destination, it is a journey within the journey, a unique sensory and emotional experience, a meeting with the raw essence of the Andean nature.

Pourtant, chaque effort est récompensé par un émerveillement constant. There’s a quiet magic in exploring such remote areas, where the beauty and the cultural heritage feel untouched by the usual tourist rush. Your journey makes it clear how rewarding it can be to venture off the standard routes and experience Bolivia’s wild, tranquil side.

You are 100% right! I first discovered the South Lípez in the late ’90s, when it was completely off the tourist radar — harsh, remote, and absolutely unforgettable. Since then, a bit of tourism has developed, but most 4x4s still follow the same route, which leaves plenty of space for those who want to explore and feel that quiet magic you mentioned. Maybe that’s the right balance in the end, allowing everyone to enjoy the place in their own way?
