Spoilers Not Included

Note: View this post through Peakd.

Let's see if this works.

There is a new feature on Peakd that I am sure is going to get more creatively used than what I will do here, but I think it is an interesting feature that could have some further development done to it to make it more useful for various things.

Spoiler Alert

image.png

It was brought to my attention by

@galenkp

And it likely has several uses.

This is NSFW

Perv.

image.png

Yes, it is a "Spoiler" tag that allows a reveal of some text.

Or an Image

Don't look at my wife!

And while this is pretty cool and could be used for a bit of fun, what it also hints at is the ability to have "read more" sections as well as "subscription only" sections built within posts. Currently, this is just a text solution that hides it on compatible interfaces, but potentially, it could be combined with similar functionality and abilities like Splinterlands uses through Custom JSONs to hide battles.

This also opens up for options for the reveal, where for example for NSFW content there might be some kind of age verification or liability acceptance. There could also be password protected content or "paid subscription" triggers where there is a monthly subscription that allows key access or, perhaps even an on-the-fly access through a vote, making it a post within a post. This could be useful for subscription magazines where collections of posts can be brought together and the posts get rewarded based on various metrics, like most read.

Obviously, these things open up more avenues for various kinds of abuse too, but dealing with the negatives is part of the evolutionary process and for every advancement, there is going to be incentive to take advantage of it and use it in "unintended" ways.

One of the biggest arguments when it comes to "paying for content" on Hive is the idea that it is all meant to be transparent and free, because people have become accustomed to getting everything digital for free, even though, we are paying far more for consumable content than we have ever paid in the history of the world. Just look at all of the streaming services people subscribe to and then, there are the adult services like OnlyFans - where adult content is sold by the entertainer more directly to the audience.

Who the Fuck

pays for Porn?

But, the appetite for "customized" content is growing rapidly, where people feel there is value when they get the sense that something is created just for them or, they have access to something that not everyone has access to. While the "free internet" frowns upon this, it is also driven by the sense if exclusivity and membership, which is why the social movements have so much support - because people want to belong to a group.

How would you feel for example if the next reveal was going to cost you at least a 1 cent vote?

Pay me

Do you want your money back?

Remember though, if it is getting accessed through a vote, that the access will also attract a curation return of 50% - though I am not sure how that would work in practice with the reward mechanisms currently in place.

But of course, a 1 cent vote is currently around 750 HIVE POWER, which means that a lot of people wouldn't have access to it, which is why the calls of exclusion will begin and fairness. But, isn't this the case with pretty much everything in the world already? Not everyone can afford a Ferrari, not everyone can afford a loaf of bread. Should content be treated differently for some reason? What is the difference?

Having paid subscriptions on Hive would be a gamble for an individual content provider I believe, as I don't think that most people would be willing to have that imposed, even if they are already voting the posts of that creator. However, there might be usecases where it is acceptable under certain conditions or, for platform subscriptions that offer some kind of additional service that people value. There are also other applications for it, where for example, there could be subscriber communities where the content with is hidden to everyone other than subscribers behind keys.

Regardless of the paid subscription content through voting, I do think that there is some value in being able to have an additional "checks and balances" for some content on the platform, where an additional opt-in or subscription is required. This would allow more potential for platforms to build a business model on Hive and not have to rely on daily votes alone in order to get paid consistently. Instead, they can attract subscribers for extended periods of time either through direct transfers or, autovotes for access.

Building functionality is important for the growth of Hive in order to keep bringing it closer to parity with the centralized platforms and options. This isn't easy to do in a decentralized manner for many reasons, however small changes like a "reveal" option will lead to creative uses of it and then, further development and new options to utilize.

While the "Spoiler" tag is only available on Peakd at the moment, Galen said that it will be coming to Hive.blog in the near future also and I think it would be good for all the viewing interfaces to implement it, to encourage more usage and of course, improvements for the Hive consumers.

One brilliant use of it would be to hide the mass of links, wallet addresses and banners for all those people who have a "signature" longer than their post.

Affectionately known as

Wankers.

Update: Nice! Seems to work on Hive.blog already - almost...

Sort:

What's broken on hive.blog? Please ping @quochuy here with details.

Will do mate.

Seems to work fine on Condenser:

hey @quochuy

image.png

Change to consider:

  • move the text to the left hand side instead of justified to the right.

It is broken-ish on Peakd too @jarvie

image.png

image.png

Other general changes:

  • can change spoiler text, but can't use special characters like ? and ! - it changes the text.

normal:

image.png

with !

image.png

  • The video inside spoiler is fixed on staging.
  • The broken example you gave on Peakd is because you didn't add a space after the bracket for [Pay me]. The current syntax requires a space before the opening bracket and after the closing one.

I'll consider loosening that syntax requirement. Also will check for special chars.

I've already changed my templates and will play around with this new thing. Seems like it'll work well.

I wonder

if it will work on the other frontends. I heard hive.blog will support it (I think) but I'm not sure about the others.

One brilliant use of it would be to hide the mass of links, wallet addresses and banners for all those people who have a "signature" longer than their post.

Wankers indeed.

It seems to work on HB now. It didn't hide the video though.

 last year

Hmm ok. Well, let's see. I only use Peakd anyway so it won't matter to me if it doesn't work on the others.

Might make for a bit of fun at least in posts :)

Do you two want a get a room? 😂

ps. This is what my older daughter say when we "have a discussion" :)

:D :D

Only if it's a theatre room...I don't have one in this house and I miss having one.

We have a relatively tiny home, everything can be heard from everywhere!

 last year

Yeah, I'd say so. Lots of clickbaity stuff. 🤣

Oh the video was part of the spoiler?
Will check see if that can be fixed

On peaked it "worked", but it only revealed the link, not an embed. I'd prefer it to stay "onsite" - but that is a @jarvie issue :)

The embed is the issue. Because it gets transformed by the plug-in that detects embed links so it might be a bit tricky to make it work.

Perhaps that is why peakd moved to just have the link for it instead.

Yea. With condenser, if memory serves, all embed are done first, before markdowns

I've found a fix. Coming soon.

It's a great feature and you used it really well. The one thing that be done right away is to hide signature from the post. I agree with that point.
This feature could be adopted by all hive front ends- if possible :)

I am hoping that at least the major ones will add it in soon, because it might be a bit of fun, plus it makes it more interesting.

Yes. Something to play around and have fun with. Or a lil bit of utility.

HiveFans, pay per view - 1 cent 🍻

Another use case to stack up HP… for the inevitable.

Or keep a version of old front end and view it for free 😎

:)

"I voted you - now get your cryptos out!"

I don't think that paid content/subscription system would work for HIVE, but for the NSFW contents which I wouldn't care. As in your example, 1 cent might not be seen important; however, achieving 750 HP for a newbie could not be easy :)

Yeah, the 1c vote is quite large. I have been here when there was a heavy voting curve and I had a couple thousand HP before it was worth a cent! :D

I wish I had signed up HIVE (Steemit then) one more year before :)

The development of business models on decentralized systems is always oriented toward getting paid consistently. But adding a payment model and not just a daily payout system is much more profitable, and that's what invites more people to get involved here.

In your opinion, would "spoilers" be the first step towards getting there in this system, Sir?

It has to be a compelling used case/content however. A lot of people overvalue what they add here, especially since it can be found elsewhere. The reason I keep mine quite personal is, no one else in the world is me.

I think after the last hardfork, there is more potential to build on Hive now. Just need devs to build and then, consumers to make it worth it.

image.png

It seems they missed the preview images :P, images in the spoiler tag still show up there.

ooh, that is interesting. I haven't tested it much at all. I added an image to see if I could. The other thing was that it didn't handle the YouTube link well either and, I couldn't use special characters in the "spoiler" text, like question marks and fullstops.

like question marks and fullstops.

That is weird as heck, I wonder why.

I think I've only ever knowingly used PeakD and 3pseak to access Hive content, so thanks for letting me know about this new PeakD feature. I certainly hope it is utilized for good, but like you mention, there will always be people testing the rules and trying to take advantage of new tech. Taraz staying ahead of the times!

I used to be ahead - now I am more "adjacent" (lagging behind) :D

There are heaps of different ways to look at the chain and what is going on here. This is an interesting one that looks at the contents of each 3 second transaction. SL = Splinterlands.

https://hiveuprss.github.io/hiveisbeautiful/

Oh boy, that is neat. I spent more time than I would like to admit just watching those little bubbles populate the screen.

Interesting feature! I wasn't too sure why you said use PeakD, now I see.

Still free and open

Until blockchain viewing is blocked before this feature can be monetized

Clicks can get annoying

Or fun for some 🤣

This made me laugh!:

Now Rick Rolling on Hive Got more Easier. Have seen on PeakD the way it works is something Good and this feature was quite needed.

Hopefully will be available on all other hive interfaces.

Paid subscription in a Decentralized Platform sound's new thing to me.

Paid subscription in a Decentralized Platform sound's new thing to me.

It is already being done in various ways, with Splinterlands being the main usage. It isn't necessarily a subscription, but in order to have access you have to buy a "spellbook" etc to use it.

Cool useful feature I didn't know about. never gonna give, never gonna give ......give you up

I think you will have some fun with it :)

Already hive is very famous and popular Blockchain and add some more interesting features it become more popular over all the world. I think 1 cent vote is small because every give his time make real and interesting content. Hopefully some new apps launch on hive and new users join it. I also think you can share very usecase for hive. It helps hive Price going up.

Oh, this is an interesting features with many good potential use cases.

However, I bet it's going to be a lot glitchy for a while, especially that it only kinda works on peakd and hive.blog for now.

Other frontend Devs should be working on implementing by now. No one would want to have something exclusive or hidden openly revealed on other frontends.

It’s funny but I tried to comment on this on

Besides PeakD

Optionally with more lines

But it didn’t work. I wonder if they don’t have the functionality yet lol
