Hello dear Hivers ! I hope you are well and that the preparations for the New Year are going well :)
As for us, I think we're going to stay home quietly with my girlfriend who I'm meeting tomorrow. I have the impression that the Christmas festivities, although very happy, have already been very tiring for each of us and a bit of calm and rest will allow us to start the year well !
Today, I propose a walk in the historic district of Vieux Lyon, one of my last walks in this city where I grew up and that I know rather well! This walk will end in a bookshop that would be difficult to describe. Esoteric ? Mystical ? Magical ? Or simply free-spirited and off the beaten track ? Probably a bit of all of this at the same time and I have to say that it is a nice discovery because you can really find all kinds of books and all of them are of quality !

The Vieux Lyon is located under the Fourvière hill that I presented to you a few days ago, and between the banks of the Saône. This district stretches from St Georges church to St Paul's, passing by St Jean cathedral. This architectural ensemble from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is really a survivor because it was almost destroyed in the 1960s and was saved by the determination of groups of inhabitants. A few years after this struggle, the entire district was classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Incredible, isn't it ?
The windows of buildings from this period have the classic mullions, i.e. the stone frames and crosses that make up the openings. As far as the colors are concerned, they are the original ones which are respected throughout the restorations. The town planning charter is in fact quite strict on this point and there is a whole range of shades to respect ! I think it's very good that we are preserving traces and ensembles of this quality.
Above is the rear part of the Palais de Justice on the banks of the Saône.
For once, I have put together the different architectural elements so that you can easily see the differences and analogies. For the most part, these are "only" details, but that is what makes this district so charming and I think without lying that one could spend a whole week there without having done a precise tour.
Almost on every corner of a building, there are statues, in this case mostly of Virgin Mary. Indeed, Lyon has always been a very Catholic city.
A very famous square with traditional Lyon restaurants, the "bouchons", famous for their classic French cuisine !
Everywhere you find small details that act as markers and ultimately as advertisements for a particular craftsman or rich merchant...
A very nice porch with two sculptures at each end of the arch.
At the end of the street, you can see St John's cathedral, but we won't go there today, you can find one of my other articles on this subject in my Pinmapple visits :)
Let's finish with some door tops either in ironwork or carved in the limestone of the region. A peacock, a St Jacques shell, a kind of gargoyle...
For me, this district has always made me think of the beginnings of Italy. Indeed, we are at the beginning of the transalpine region and the exchanges with the south of the European continent and especially with the north of Italy have always been very important and sustained.
But let's finish with this very special and interesting bookshop. This one is called "CADENCE" - a whole program ! You will have no trouble finding it if you are passing through this part of Lyon. It contains essays and treatises on magic, esotericism, but also on different religions and philosophies, whether spiritual or not. I am particularly interested, as always, in the religions of Asia, with Buddhism in the lead. But I have to say that I am open to everything as long as I don't know about it.
This time, I was tempted by an introductory book on Shinto, which you can find on the top left of the image above and which gathers the different works that piqued my curiosity.
I like this organized and disorganized atmosphere at the same time. You feel that there is a system, but it has to be tamed. It's organic and I love that !
I hope you enjoyed this visit of what is for me, one of the most beautiful area of the city and if you are ever there (as for Paris :), don't hesitate to tell me, I'll be happy to make some visits with you !

De notre côté, je crois que nous allons rester tranquillement à la maison avec ma copine que je retrouve demain. J’ai l’impression que les festivités de Noel, bien que très heureuses, ont déjà été bien fatigantes pour nous chacun de notre côté et un peu de calme et de repos nous permettra de bien commencer l’année !
Aujourd’hui, je vous propose une promenade dans le quartier historique du Vieux Lyon, une de mes dernières promenades dans cette ville où j’ai grandi et que je connais donc plutôt bien ! Cette balade se terminera dans une librairie qui serait difficile à qualifier. Esotérique ? Mystique ? Magique ? Ou simplement libre d’esprit et hors des sentiers battus ? Probablement un peu de tout cela à la fois et je dois dire que c’est une belle découverte car on trouve vraiment tous types d’ouvrages et tous sont de qualité !

Le Vieux Lyon se situe sous la colline de Fourvière que je vous ai présenté il y a quelques jours, et entre les berges de la Saône. Ce quartier s’étire de l’église St Georges à celle de St Paul, en passant par la cathédrale St Jean. Dites vous que cette ensemble architectural du Moyen-Âge et de la Renaissance est vraiment un rescapé car il a failli être détruit dans les années 60 et a été sauvé par la détermination de collectifs d’habitants. Quelques années après cette lutte, le quartier dans son intégralité sera classé au patrimoine mondiale de l’Unesco. Incroyable, non ?
Pour les fenêtres des bâtiments de cette époque, on retrouve les meneaux classiques, il s’agit de ces cadres et croix de pierre qui composent les ouvertures. Concernant les couleurs, ce sont celles d’origine qui sont respectées au fil des restaurations. La charte d’urbanisme est en effet assez sévères sur ce point et il y a toute une gamme de coloris à respecter ! Je trouve que c’est très bien que l’on conserve ainsi des traces et des ensembles de cette qualité.
Ci-dessus, il s’agit de la partie arrière du Palais de justice qui se trouve sur les quais de la Saône.
Pour une fois, je vous ai rassemblé les différents éléments architecturaux afin que vous puissiez percevoir aisément les différences et les analogies. Pour la plupart, il ne s’agit « que » de détails, mais c’est au fond ce qui fait le charme de ce quartier et je pense sans mentir que l’on pourrait y passer une semaine complète sans en avoir fait le tour avec précision.
Presque à chaque coin d'immeuble, on trouve des statues, ici surtout de Vierges Marie. En effet, Lyon a toujours été une ville très catholique.
Une placette très connue avec les restaurants traditionnels de Lyon, les fameux "bouchons", célèbres pour leur cuisine classique française !
Partout on trouve de petits détails qui faisait offices de marqueurs et finalement de publicité pour tel artisan ou riche marchand...
Un porche très joli avec deux sculptures à chaque bout de l'arc.
Au fond de la rue, on aperçoit la cathédrale St Jean, mais nous n'irons pas jusque là aujourd'hui, vous pourrez retrouver un de mes autres articles sur ce sujets dans mes visites Pinmapple :)
Terminons avec quelques hauts de portes soit en ferronnerie ou bien sculptés dans le calcaire de la région. Un paon, une coquille St Jacques, une espèce de gargouille...
Pour moi, ce quartier m’a toujours fait songer aux prémices de l’Italie. En effet, nous sommes au début de la région transalpines et les échanges avec le sud du continent européen et à fortiori avec le nord de l’Italie ont toujours été très importants et soutenus.
Mais terminons par cette librairie si particulière et intéressante. Celle-ci s’appelle « CADENCE » - déjà tout un programme ! Vous n’aurez aucun mal à la trouver si vous êtes de passage dans cette partie de Lyon. On n’y trouve des essais et des traités sur la magie, l’ésotérisme, mais aussi sur les différentes religions et philosophies, que celles-ci soient spirituelles ou non. Ce qui m’intéresse plus particulièrement, comme toujours, c’est les religions d’Asie avec le bouddhisme en tête. Mais je dois dire que je suis ouvert à tout du moment que je ne connais pas.
Cette fois, c’est un livre d’introduction sur le shintô qui m’aura tenté, vous le retrouverez en haut à gauche de l’image ci-dessus et qui rassemble les différents ouvrages qui ont piqués ma curiosité.
J’aime cette ambiance organisée et désorganisée à la fois. On sent qu’il y a un système, mais celui-ci doit se laisser apprivoiser. C’est organique et j’adore cela !
J'espère que vous aurez apprécié cet visite de ce qui est pour moi, l'un des plus beau quartier de la ville et si vous êtes un jour de passage là-bas (comme pour Paris :), n'hésitez pas à me le dire, je serai ravi de faire quelques visites en votre compagnie !

I love book stores, the older the better. One of my favorite smells is of old books, it's very comforting for me. I had a favorite one in London, when I used to live and work there and would often just sit there in my lunch break, feeling very nurtured amongst those old books.

I know what you mean, I've always loved these places that are both out of the world and at the same time in the middle of it. The energy that comes out of books and their gatherings is unbelievably good and powerful.
