Market Friday - Going to Cornubia Mall due to a Shattered Cell Phone Screen.

Today is #MarketFriday, a project initiated by @dswigle, and this post is my contribution to this project for this week.

Yes, it happened! I dropped my phone and the screen got completely shattered!

I am always careful not to carry my phone in my hand when I have other items in my hands. This time, it was no different. We were about to leave for one of our outings. So, I had my camera and some keys in my hands. I've made sure that my phone is secure in my pocket so that I cannot drop it by accident.

We got to the car and I carefully placed my camera in the car where it was out of sight and safe. I turned around and took my phone out of my pocket before getting into the car.

And yes...it caught the corner of my pocket and it slipped from my fingers...falling flat on its screen, face-down, on the driveway next to the car.

I couldn't believe what just happened! I always take care to prevent such things from happening. I hesitated, almost not wanting to pick it up and see the results...

But I realized that just staring at it, is not going to change anything...lol!

I picked it up, and...the screen was completely shattered!

It was still working though, but wow, the screen was destroyed and at times, when swiping over the screen, you could feel small micro glass splinters coming out...

I was furious, frustrated, disappointed...all at the same time.

But there was no sense in standing there and let the whole day come to an end. My wife was already in the car and so was our 4-year-old grandson who was keen on going with us for the day's outing.

In my head, I was already making calculations about the potential cost of either getting the screen repaired...or would I have to replace the phone...?

By that evening, after mentioning the incident to the kids as well, the kids asked me if I couldn't claim from our insurance.

Yes! I then remembered that we have our cell phones specified in our insurance policy.

On Monday, I contacted Virseker, our insurance company. The lady was extremely helpful and within minutes a claim was registered. Early Tuesday morning I received a phone call from the insurance company, informing me that the claim was successfully submitted and that I could proceed to get a report from a cellphone company, stating whether the phone could be repaired or whether it needs to be replaced.

Then I got hit by some virus of some kind and I was knocked flat for a six for the next 24 hours... Can you believe that...lol?

So, I was only able to get out on Thursday morning for the first time.

Seeing that I have a Huawei cell phone, our youngest daughter recommended a Huawei dealer that she has used before. She has one of the latest models with all the bells and whistles on it and I think she got it from them and was happy with their service. This dealer is situated in the Cornubia Mall in Umhlanga, just north of Durban.

I was about to go out in that direction anyway on Thursday morning, as I agreed to take our oldest daughter to the airport. She was about to leave on a business trip and she had to be at the airport by 8 am.

So, by about 8:30 am, I was at the Cornubia Mall in Umhlanga.

I took the photo above while standing in the center of the mall.

Let me give you some perspective.

With the majority of shops opening at 9 am (including the Huawei dealership), I had time to take some photos first.

I first located the Huawei dealer and parked the car relatively close to it.

But then I walked in the opposite direction to get some photos of the bigger picture.

I went to the middle. From here I took a photo of where the name of the mall is displayed. I stood under a pedestrian bridge that you can use to cross the main road (running through the center of the mall) to get to the other side of the mall.

You enter the mall area on the main road from the eastern side, coming from the ocean. You then enter a traffic circle. If you exit the traffic circle to either side, you enter the parking areas of the mall.

If you exit on the opposite side, continuing straight, you exit the mall area on the western side, going inland.

I then decided to go back toward my car and go onto the pedestrian bridge, to get some photos of the "bigger picture".

As you approach the pedestrian bridge, there is a gym and several health and fitness businesses.

There are also some action soccer courts with an elevated deck in the middle, where you can sit and relax. I suppose you can sit here on the deck while having something to eat and drink while watching some games taking place below you.

As you approach this deck, this beautiful tree is towering over you from the deck above you.

In the next photo, getting onto the deck, this is the view of the mall on the opposite side of the main road. You can also see part of one of the action soccer courts visible right below the deck to the right in the photo.

The mall then expands to the right. In the next photo, you can see one of the action soccer courts below the deck, with the pedestrian bridge leading to the other side of the mall on the right-hand side of the photo. A small part of Umhlanga is visible in the background on the horizon.

Looking further to the right, the rest of the mall on this side of the main road, also where the store is that I was heading for. You can also see more action soccer courts on this side (in the shade) just below the deck as well.

It was getting closer to 9 am by now... So let's start getting closer to the shop I was heading for.

Getting closer...waiting for them to open their doors...

They took my phone in and will create a report for the insurance company, stating whether it can be repaired or whether it has to be replaced.

The report will be sent to me and I just need to forward it to my insurance company.

At the time of writing this post, I haven't received any feedback yet. That means I still don't have any specific amounts or any indication of what route will be taken. But I guess that means it will provide me with a "follow-up" post after this post...lol.

So, that will be it for today, folks!

Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!

Big malls not somewhere we go very often, have not been up that way to shop in many years.

Hope the phone is sorted out soon one way or another, ask the guys to transfer your data across if they offer a new phone unless you have it backed up somewhere.

I'm not keen on going to the shops at all. We haven't been to Cornubia before either. But with the phone situation, I did a search for Huawei agents and the nearest one was at Cornubia.

Apologies for the late reply though, I just had a hectic time over the last couple of days...

It seems like the phone will get sorted out, thank you, @joanstewart!

And thank you for the tokens! I do appreciate them!

Shopping for food once a week is more than enough, only get to large Mall when I really have to, cannot stand the loud noise within those places.

Also hectic at the moment assisting my oldest son going on an extended Visa to NZ, Mom's are never let off the hook being a support base in decision making.

Have a great day.

Yes, the duties of parenthood never seem to come to an end😅!

You must have a great day too, thank you!

That is a huge mall, isn't it? I never go to malls, not for years and years, but, like you I would for specific things, I just don't have many of those things lately. All of our big, spendy stores have moved out of the malls or closed.

Okay, maybe only the ones I like... They always seem to tease me with a store, only to take it away. Perhaps I have bad taste? Anyway...

I am glad you are working with the insurance company on this. The only problem I have with this is how long they take to allow you to get it fixed, or could you get it fixed? Now that I say that, the answer is no, in case you can get a new phone instead. I wouldn't be able to not have a phone, especially if you have someone in your care or someone that you need contact with. I have not had the bad luck of ever having to replace my phone.

I am ashamed to admit that my phone probably hits the floor or pavement 3 to 4 times a week. I always think I am being careful, but, thankfully, and I really mean this! I am so shocked it is still with me.

You seem to have a really nice phone store there - I am glad for you! Good luck and hopefully, they will just give you a new one!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

It seems like we have much in common regarding going to malls and stores...lol.

The insurance company was sharp and on the ball all the time. The delay was with the cell phone company... But things took a turn for the better on Monday afternoon. Then everything started happening really fast. I've written a post about it that I will publish here in #MarketFriday tomorrow!

But yes I've got my phone back. As you say, it is utterly frustrating to be without a phone. You drop your phone 3 to 4 times a week...lol? Wow, luckily you didn't get any damage to it yet...hahaha. I have also dropped my phone before, but it happens very seldom to be honest. But this time, I was not so lucky. Face down, flat on the screen on the hard surface of our driveway...🙈!

They repaired my phone, fitted it with a new battery as well, and for now, it seems like new!

Yay!! Im so happy it had a great ending!

I just noticed now... Thank you for the nice Hive Tip, @dswigle! I'm always late to notice it...but I do pick it up...🙈😅! And I do appreciate it, thank you👍!
