Market Friday: Designer Handbags — WTH??

in Market Friday2 years ago (edited)

I suppose there are really two types of people in this world — those who like the finer things, and those who would never spend more than $30 for a purse and then wear it with absolutely everything (regardless of the whole matching or clashing conundrum) until the straps break and then finally, reluctantly, buy another.

Hint: I’m not of “the finer things” ilk. If I had money just burning a hole in my pocket, I would either do more work on my house (aka The Money Pit) or give it to the poor. But buy an entire collection of overpriced leather pouches to carry lipstick? Nope!

That said, I don’t mind a little window shopping at Von Maur!

Okay now that I’ve started right off with a silly tirade, let’s just take a breather here to acknowledge the awesomeness of @dswigle and the splendid weekly phenomenon that is Market Friday. Each week you can travel the world from the comfort of your phone, laptop, iPad or computer and see how people shop, what they buy, and what caught their eye that week, all across the globe. All thanks to this fun community hosted by @dswigle!

So what do you suppose the price tag might be on the above pink Coach bag?

350 clams! And in that rather garish color, is it going to be your everyday handbag? I don’t think so!

Now, don’t worry, I’m not going to go on and on about prices (although it’s possible I will reveal another price tag or two). Let’s just enjoy some window shopping, shall we?

I mean is there anything more fun than an entire rack of cute designer bags for affluent teenagers? (Oops. I let my sarcasm slip in there!)

Seriously, now, I’m pretty sure this was the largest collection of handbags I’ve seen of any kind, anywhere, let alone bags by big brands like Coach, Kate Spade and Michael Kors. It went on and on. I did not even take photos of all of them.

Ready for another price check? Maybe I just fell off the turnip truck and others expect these kinds of prices. For me, they make me feel a little light headed!

Here it is, the next big reveal. Here’s a handbag that is literally the size of your hand. It would be the perfect size if you needed to carry your actual hand in a bag. (Ew! I did not intend for that to get weird.)

Okay let’s look at some really colorful bags! Would you wear this one? I mean without feeling completely self-conscious the whole time?

Of course their are subdued colors as well, for the business executive, important business trip or business lunch!

That is it for my Market Friday post, my friends! Thank you for stopping by! If you have a love of designer bags, I hope you don’t take my silliness too seriously! I just grew up in a family where every penny counted and the idea of spending that kind of cash on a purse is quite foreign to me! But I bet it is fun to own a really nice designer bag!

That's a lot of amazing collections. I would have a hard time choosing.

I agree! There are some amazing colors there!

I'm the type of person who doesn't spend much money on overpriced things. However, I don't judge people because that's part of themselves to reward themselves or be happy about it. We are free to do what we want anyway.

By the way, I must admit these bags look very pretty indeed.

You are absolutely right. I hope my "judging" came off as silly! It was intended as such. We all have different things that make us happy, right?

I’m not of “the finer things” ilk. If I had money just burning a hole in my pocket, I would either do more work on my house (aka The Money Pit) or give it to the poor. But buy an entire collection of overpriced leather pouches to carry lipstick? Nope!

I agree with you my friend @jayna, I am one of those who use the same bag for a long time.
Someone once told me: brand name clothes are better because they last a long time. I replied: The brand doesn't matter, because if you buy several at a lower price, it will last a long time if you know how to take care of it.

I love to see showcases and I love to see things of value and those of less value, there are always beautiful things in all ways. Nice showcase of bags, the pink one is very nice, but it doesn't go with all kinds of clothes as you mention.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, @isabelpena! I know in some circles, one must have the right brand. I guess I don't travel in those circles! So I agree with you that brand doesn't matter. But I suppose if I grew up in LA, or in an affluence community (we have them here in Minnesota too), maybe I would feel differently!

That is a serious amount of bags there !

"and those who would never spend more than $30 for a purse and then wear it with absolutely everything (regardless of the whole matching or clashing conundrum) until the straps break and then finally, reluctantly, buy another."

THAT would be ME !

I can't say I don't splurge here and there on some things, but it is not for impressing others, just things I like, however, purses is not one of those things. I know we are all different, but I have never understood spending that much for a purse of any kind. It's ok if others do it if it means something to them, but to be honest, most of the overpriced bags I have seen, I didn't even think they were attractive, so that made it even more hard for me to understand spending that much on such a thing.

Some of the ones in your photos were quite fun looking though and yes, I am also the kind of person that would carry something wildly colorful, without hesitation !

Some of the colorful ones really are fun. I have to admit I have my eyes on that first pink one. It's a slightly subdued pink. Or maybe a flamingo? I'm not sure what to call it. But if I was going to splurge on a fancy purse, I could see choosing that one. I wear a lot of black and you can wear any color with that, right? Thanks for your visit and your thoughtful comment, @jacey.boldart!

40 bucks was the max I was spending on my purse 😆

Ha ha ha! We are like minded! Oh yes, bags need to be kept dry. I bet you're right that the little moisture absorbent packets helped to keep your bag nice and dry! Nice leather really does smell awesome, doesn't it? Don't you wish you could send the aroma over video?

I'm amazed you got that awesome bag for $40! It looks like it has a good amount of pockets to keep you organized, but not so many that you can't remember where you put things. Those two front buckles are so smart!

Excellent product video, @old-guy-photos!

I have had it a few years now and it has darkened nicely and I use it daily. Still love it.

I love the smell of leather and use Duke Cannon Leaf & Leather soap. Tobacco leaves and leather and some of my fave aromas!

Oh yes! And now you can get candles with those scents!

Hi, this was fun reading and at the same time very sharp. It's ridiculous what people are capable of spending on a handbag and many other luxury items. Sure they may say and rightly so, that they spend their money on what they want but the truth is that advertising, social networks, and appearances sell some people the wrong idea of what is really valuable.
As you can guess I'm the type of person that uses one handbag for everything without worrying about matching it until it brakes apart. It might not be one that I buy for $30, I might spend $70, but I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of it, hehe.

advertising, social networks, and appearances sell some people the wrong idea of what is really valuable

Yes, I agree completely! And, at the end of the day, if you have to spend $400 to be accepted in certain social circles, it's a little sad. Thank you for stopping by for a visit, @coquicoin!

You are welcome:)
Yes, it is sad and sadder that so many people are willing to spend $400 on a handbag just to be accepted into a social circle.
Have a great Sunday. Cheers!😊
