D for dswigle: $10 Challenge for #MarketFriday

Can you see the D?

I went to the grocery store last Friday to join this challenge. When it was mentioned that there is a limit to the budget that you can spend for this week's challenge, it got me excited. I already know that grocery shopping is not ideal place to do this kind of challenge. However, we needed some items that we have ran out of. While I can buy these in stores in our neighborhood, I still decided to go to a grocery that's nearest to us. When I say nearest it's about a kilometer or so away from our apartment. It's an opportunity to exercise too so I walked.

There are some of the photos I took inside the grocery.

The items I really need to buy that time were bleach and body soap. Then I picked up some stuff that we usually consume. I had to keep calculating whether I have exceeded the budget or not. I have to keep circling back to certain items because I can't decide what I really wanted to buy.

For the bleach and bread, we usually buy the bigger items but for this challenge, I have to settle for the smaller ones.

Initially, I formed the products into D thinking of the equivalent of $10 in our currency which is PHP528.22 as of this writing. Because our author for this challenge has the same initial letter to her name, then D for @dswigle it is :D

The canned goods amounted to PHP286.50. The bread costs PHP30.00. The noodles cost PHP 108.00. The bar soap is at PHP75.75. Lastly, the bleach is at PHP36.00. In total, I have spent PHP536.50 - a little over the budget of PHP528.22.

Then last Sunday, I was looking forward to the market encounter that is being held every Sunday in one of the roads here in the city. This will be closed to vehicles and stalls will be put in place where different items and products were sold.

We failed to stay within the budge of $10.00 unfortunately.

It was a hot day and walking along the road in the middle of the day is not advisable. Thus, this calls for an ice cream. When I spotted this vendor, we immediately bought some. There were only two flavors being sold which were strawberry and mango. Obviously, I went for mango as I am not a fan of strawberry.

One cone is PHP50.00 each so that's PHP100.00 already as me and my partner had one each.

After that, we then walked up and down the road to check what else should we buy.

image.png

Although we see this particular seller all the time whenever we visit, we haven't tried any of their products. We decided to go for sliced ham. For half a kilo, that costs PHP450.00.

I like the bag that comes with it.

By this point I told my partner we have already exceeded the supposed budget. We were looking for a particular variant of sweet potato but found none.

We thought we are set but as we continued going down the other side of the road, we ended up buying a compost for PHP25.00 a kilo, papaya and pomelo worth PHP203.00 and banana worth PHP50.00. All in all, we spent PHP828.00 at the Sunday market.

Here are other photos that I took that time:

These are just a few of the items that you can see every Sunday. There are plants and flowers at the lower part of the road, then food in the middle and finally other products. There is also one area dedicated for chalk art of course.

Other than that, there are also dancers, mimes and buskers to entertain you.

This army guy is the most popular mime of them all and it is the crowd's favorite because of how funny he is. The kids dancing is my first time to see them and they were the only dancers that time.

It's always a lively Sunday market. Everybody can have a good time. You can go there to be entertained, to eat or just feast your eyes on whatever is there or you can be part of the artistry by drawing on the pavement or if you are like me, just taking photos.

There goes my #MarketFriday this week hosted by @dswigle. You can read more about the rules here.
