Northgate Market - San Diego, CA [EN/PT-BR]

Hello everyone!

This is my first post here on Market Friday and I will be showing you a market that I go pretty often here in San Diego.

I'm from Brazil and since we moved here, me and my family, we started looking for products we were used to have in Brazil. But some things are hard to find since they are specific to our culture. We have here a brazilian market, but it's very small, more like a convenience store and you can't find everything. So we started looking in different places. One thing that we missed a lot was what we call "french bread", and it kinda looks like the french rolls here, but the dough and taste are completely different. So I heard the mexicans have a bread they call "bolillo" and that it was like our french bread. I tried a couple of mexican grocery stores, and I found one that was just like the ones we had in Brazil.
The Northgate Market is a mexican market that has a few stores here in San Diego, and because of the bread I started to go there often. They also have one more thing we use a lot in Brazil, and not so easy to find, yuca roots. I get them frozen already peeled. They are great fried as a substitute to potatoes. Now when I go there I end up getting a lot more then just bread and yuca. Let's check it out.

I love the ceviche with guacamole, they make fresh guacamole on the spot, and have great ceviche as well. The salsas are awsome too.

Welcome to #MarketFriday!I am glad you found your way here! It looks like you found the perfect store for everything! It is clean and well laid out and it carries the foods that you need, nobody can beat that!

I was surprised you didn't find your favorite foods, especially in San Diego when you first got there! But, there is always a tiny difference, no matter where you go, except for home. Will you be permanent here or are you here for a while? I have only been to Brazil twice and both times for work, so it was a different experience than if I was visiting for fun. :) It was very beautiful. I know many people think that you are from Brazil. so the Spanish culture is perfect. Yes and no, right? Portuguese is spoken there, although I know my uncle and his family are Portuguese and he understands a lot of Spanish, but, is still different.

Aside from that, I am so glad you found some comfort foods. I have lived in many places in the world and I missed the little things. But, they became big things when I wanted them.

I have to be honest. Bread is one of those things I missed terribly. Not my own. LOL Baguettes from France and Brochen from Germany... How could I not miss my own, but others?? LOL It was true!

I get that bread here! Bolillo is a very popular bread here. I am in the Washington, DC area. I lived in Texas before this and it was popular there also. Texas is where I learn how to make great salsa and all those wonderful tastes.

I hope this finds you in good spirits! Happy 4th of July to you!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you for the warm welcome!
San Diego has a little bit of everything, but it takes time for you to find your way when you move to a new place, specially to a new country. For now, we are here to stay, been here for 6 years. Yes, portuguese and spanish are similar, we can understand spanish pretty well and since I moved here I learned a lot of spanish too.
Now I can find most of the things we were used to have in Brazil, but I'm still finding new things everyday. I love the diversity of markets we have here, specially the oriental ones, we love it. I will post some of the markets we like here on #MarketFriday soon.
Happy 4th of July for you too!

Nice! That ceviche looks amazing!

The ceviche is amazing. Perfect match with the fresh guacamole. There are a lot of Northgate stores in LA area as well, I'm sure you can find one near you.

You make me hungry seeing all this fresh and yummi food!

Super yummi!! Thanks for stopping by.
