RE: Tales of a New Roof for Market Friday

in Market Friday3 years ago

Architectural shingles are the way to go! That's what I did as well and don't regret it.

House looks great! And no fear of water leaks is also something that is a relief to not need to think about. Hopefully one of those trees doesn't have a Moment and decide to come down on your nice new roof.

One of the reasons that some plywood is so expensive is because it's lined with lead; this prevents the government from surveilling your house habits via satellite, and also annoys Superman.

OMG Victor! I am not sure I believe you. Here I thought it was the pandemic. :) Yours makes better sense, of course.

This house is a weekend/ occasional house out of the city, so it is not a full-time house. But, after it was loaned to a family member who had nowhere for his family and him to live, and he literally trashed it? It is a mess, but, one by one, the things will get done. The roof was just old. Very old. The darn wind didn't blow hard enough and it never hails over there. I have been waiting for ten years and finally, the insurance company charged me $440 extra because the roof was "bad." Well, it did need to be changed. But, you are right! Those architectural shingles are beautiful! I love them and the company guarantees them for ten years themselves and the shingle company does 20 years, although prorated a bit. If we have a windstorm and lose a shingle, they have the extra shingles plus some they buy (same dye lot) in their warehouse and will come out, free of charge, and replace it. My neighbor used him and yes! He came out, so I was sold.

Those aren't even the big trees. I think about them every time I lay my head down to sleep! Yikes! The sycamores are about 125 years old (or more) and there are 17 old pecans and 17 black walnuts. I love the wood on the black walnut! Thanks so much for stopping by @wwwiebe!!

#MarketFriday loves you!

125 years! That's even older than me! I'm curious, do you ever collect pecans and walnuts from them?

Roofs are no laughing matter. I replaced the roof on my own shed - or, at least, attempted to - and the difficulty of it surprised me. I like to do as much as I can on my own, but the roof was going to be way, way beyond me.

House projects never seem to end, particularly if someone left the house is shambles. I've got painting to do today, in fact. Yay.

@wwwiebe: I finished the inside already. The only thing left is to resand a floor that he put Old English scratch cover all over the dining room! Victor, can you believe this? I cannot. Even a five-year-old would know better. But, better than the wood stove that he bought and installed to save $ on the heating bill. I have radiators. So I have to pull up the tiles off my antique floor and resand that (he put it in the hallway, so I can see it as I walk in the door) OMG. and repoint the chimney that he vented it into. I am whining, but, the fact is, I did want him to feel like home, I just didn't think he would be a homewrecker! It is coming along fine and, in fact, because of him being so careless, things are getting fixed up better than they already were.

So, should I thank him?

One of my other brothers showed me how to shingle when he was redoing the lake house, it was only one level, so I wasn't afraid. :) He put a piece of wood on the roof to make me feel like I wasn't sliding down. :) It was actually quite simplistic, once you got the pattern going. It surprised me, especially when I know how much the roofing cost. Of course, he peeled everything off before I got there, so all the hard work was done.

House projects never end. Never!!

The pecans and black walnuts are collected and I cannot believe it, but, this is the third house that I have had lots of pecan trees. The other place that had as many was in Texas. I usually send some (I sometimes get to bring them) to my siblings and my neighbors on both sides love when I leave them some. I send the black walnuts to a shelling place where they do it as they are so messy! Ewww! and my hands get black! And sticky!! Do you have any nut trees where you are?

No, you shouldn't be thanking him for trashing your house; you would have gotten to the needed repairs anyway, and you wouldn't have been feeling negative about it.

Roofing isn't difficult, it's just a big ass mess. I was glad to not need to worry about any of the trash, or adding additional air flow into the roof (there was none before, and the attic paid the price).

I've got no nut trees; the trees I have in the yard are all either ornamental or dead (seriously, I watched one of them die this year - it'd be sad if I hadn't wanted to not have it anyway). I do have a boatload of roots though! Aboot the entire back yard is one big underground root. I can't dig anywhere.

@wwwiebe
The only repair the truly needed to be done was the roof. He was trying to change the soffits and literally made a mess out of them oh, so I have to have them torn out and done professionally. The house was painted right before he moved in and he didn't power wash it every year so it picked up green moss on the north side of the house oh, so I need to do that and when I power washed some of it I started feeling a little bit of paint up on the Gingerbread. What a bummer! But it's okay because it will look fresh as a daisy when the trim is repainted. As I write this I can honestly say that the trim is finished on the porch and the first coat of primer is on so that's kind of exciting. Inch by inch. I think I will be able to get some of this done. As for the roots in your yard oh, there must be a tree that's sending out feeders. I have a silver maple that I took from my house upon the Canadian border hand planted it there. Inside of two years it had feeder Roots all the way through several acres and I had silver Maples popping up everywhere. Every week I cut them down a little bit more and pretty soon I will cut the roots and pull them out. I'm going to take a look out at the trees tomorrow because believe it or not pecans have a season where they bear a lot of nuts and then the next year hardly any. Because I haven't really seen much I'm wondering if this is the ultra a year but I'll let you know and if there's the break is over abundance I will be happy to send some your way. Be a pal and say that you'll take them off my hands. I'll keep you posted on them.

Oh yes, I do have a tree in the backyard. Nine trees, in fact, but one in particular that is causing me headaches. It needs to come out, but is going to cost me between $4,000-$6,000 that I'm not looking forward to spending. I'm giving some serious thought to forgetting my age and cutting it down myself, piece by piece.

I was happy to have the roofing guys do the soffits, too. That's another chore I could have done, but was happy to watch someone else do.

Oh yeah, I'll take some pecans! And I will make pie! Now that I'm already looking forward to!

Ohhh, painting! Where ? In or out? I only have out left! My two girls went to the shore this weekend and they will be stripping the garden of anything left and checking the nuts, but, I think it's too early.

Only one bathroom left to paint! Yay, me!

In! I do need to do some outdoor painting, but I would have melted in the heat, so I'm putting it off. I know, I'm a little prince.

I painted all but the trim and.. I think I may have used the trim paint for the wall. I'll need use the wall paint for the trim now, I guess. Thankfully it's only a poorly lit hallway and no one will tell the difference anyway (it's white on white, because I'm generic, boring, and lazy)

@wwwiebe:

Oh for God's sakes, put a little color in your life! You will smile every time you walk down that hallway. I think a nice manly gray would do very nice and it would make that white trim pop. If you don't mind rummaging, walkthrough a restore and get cheap trim paint that is donated buy Builders when they have too much for a job. I've gotten lots of small job paints from there or you can go to Lowe's and get one of their oops paints. Come on guy! Live a little dangerously today. Hope you had a great day with your daughter and the meade was amazing.

I've got enough grey already without needing to remind myself of it! 😂

Seriously, the front room was a nice dark maroon before I changed it to an offwhite. The maroon was awesome, especially in the winter with the Christmas lights up, but I've been battling some depression and thought that brightening things up would help. It's a small house and I can't be too crazy with it. Besides, the new colours match the new rugs and couches.

The mead was great, as always! My favourite waitress wasn't there tonight (she always leaves me little hand drawn hearts on my take home bottles), but was still fun. Daughter's birthday is actually Monday, but we're celebrating this weekend. Monday the 13th. She was born on a Friday the 13th. Haven't looked back since!

What a bummer about your waitress! I hate going anywhere with my favorite people aren't going to be there. You really should have checked that out first. Just kidding. I'm glad that you're night went well for your day actually and thank God she wasn't born today on September 11th. My nephew was and so he was actually born the day the towers got hit and it is forever a bummer on his birthday. I get it about the maroon because my then what's maroon until a couple months ago when I painted it a beige color. I had a Christmas tree in here also but I think it took away from it a little bit. I'm not sure but this is a little bit more toned-down.
