RE: Some considerations about the Cuba OM-22 Grass (Pennisetum purpureum * Pennisetum glaucum).

in StemSocial2 years ago

We had a horde of hybrid goats before so we planted guinea grass on some areas to harvest and feed them, but it wasn't enough and might also not be so diverse in nutrients unlike having multiple options for feedstuff.

We sold it all, but I'm planning to get a new batch in 2-3 years from now. Maybe I need to start to plant high protein crops to sustain goat raising.

Hello dear @oniemaniego, thank you for sharing your experience, the Guinea crop has adequate protein percentages as long as it is supplied with the right giblets, despite this, it is important what you mention of diversifying forage sources rich in protein. A few years ago I visited an experimental station here in Venezuela and they were using Leucaena leucocephala which is a shrub legume that has an acceptable protein percentage.

My recommendation, that you locate local plant resources that adapt very well to the climatic conditions to have acceptable yields and be able to efficiently support your goats.

So long, have a great week and thanks for giving value to our content.
