😱 «Algoritmo» (ES/EN)

¡A ella!

No había música.

Me has alimentado con tu atención. Ahora me toca a mí.

😱 "Algorithm" (ES/EN)

He didn't know why he was talking to a dead man. The reel had appeared on his Facebook feed, and he watched it dozens of times.

The singer's face was undeniably mischievous, captivating.

The next day, the algorithm brought him another reel with a different song. Sonia didn't know why she was bothered by a merengue singer who had died more than 20 years ago. Yes, because after investigating, she learned that the artist was dead and all that mischief had been buried forever.

But the algorithm knew. It knew.

The first week, Sonia laughed. She made fun of herself for letting a stranger from the nineties steal her sleep. "It's just an old video," she repeated to herself while brushing her teeth. "It's nostalgia, or morbid curiosity, or simple intrigue."

However, she began to notice that the reels weren't random. The singer was looking directly at her. Not at the camera. At her! His eyes followed the movement of her thumb as she swiped the screen, and his smile widened just before the video ended.

Days later, Sonia started listening to the music outside of her phone. Not on the street, not on the radio. At home. In the silence of the early morning, when the fan died down and the building fell silent, a distant accordion chord drifted in, as if coming from another room.

She got up, checked every corner, and found nothing. But when she went back to bed, her phone was glowing on its own. The screen showed a new reel. The same singer. The same mischievousness. A different song.

"Stop showing up," Sonia wrote in a comment, knowing no one would read it. The video stopped. The singer, in the last frame, stopped smiling. For the first time, he frowned. And the audio, which had been a cheerful merengue, distorted into a guttural whisper that uttered her name: "So-nia."

Terrified, Sonia deleted the app. Deleted her account. Formatted her phone. But the algorithm doesn't live on the phone. It lives in the air, in the wires, in the waves that pass through the walls. That night, the television turned on by itself.

On the screen, the singer sat in a chair in what looked like an old recording studio, with cardboard-lined walls and a microphone from the 1950s. There was no music. Just him, staring into the camera.

"I'm not dead," the singer said, his voice captivating.

Sonia tried to turn off the television, but her legs wouldn't respond. The singer leaned toward the screen, as if he wanted to step out of it.

"You've seen me more than anyone," he continued. "You've fed me with your attention. Now it's my turn."

Sonia felt a weight on her chest. The air grew thick, smelling of withered flowers and formaldehyde. She looked at her hands and saw her fingers beginning to turn translucent, as if the screen were absorbing their matter. The singer extended a hand from the other side of the glass. It wasn't a human hand. It was long, pale, with black, twisted nails.

“Come,” he whispered. “The pit is freezing. But with you, it’ll be a little warmer.”

Sonia wanted to scream, but her voice came out as a wisp of static. The television screen flashed with a blinding light, and for a moment, she saw her own reflection: it wasn’t her anymore. It was the singer, with his mischievous smile, looking at the camera. And on the other side, in the real world, her body slumped onto the sofa, eyes open, a final notification on her phone: “You have a new reel.”

The next morning, the algorithm continued working. A user watched the video. The singer’s face was explicitly mischievous, captivating. And in the background, barely audible, a female voice whispered: “Don’t watch it. Don’t watch it. Don’t watch it.”

But the user had already started watching.

A story that might one day come true, you never know. Whilst I was reading it, a very well-told story, by the way, rather than an algorithm, I was thinking about AI and the power that people are giving it, and how dangerous that can be, yet people don’t realise it; in fact, some seem to think for themselves. The algorithm is an AI, and it took her to the other world; metaphorically speaking, it could take us to a world where human beings no longer think for themselves. What a great story, I absolutely loved it. Thank you so much and a big hug!🤗
