Patica

Hace poco más de un año llegó a nuestra familia una linda perrita, Patica. ¿Por qué ese nombre? Permítanme contarles.
Mi hijo mayor trabajaba como comerciante y tenía su propio local en la avenida cerca de nuestra casa.

A little over a year ago, a cute little dog, Patica, came into our family. Why that name? Let me tell you. My eldest son worked as a merchant and had his own shop on the avenue near our house.

Día tras día la perrita se paseaba por el trabajo de mi hijo. Era una perrita coja. Quedó así porque la habían atropellado. Él fue encariñándose con ella y le compartía de su comida.

Day after day the little dog would wander around my son's work. She was a lame dog. She got that way because she had been run over. He grew fond of her and shared his food with her.

Una mañana él la observaba desde lejos. Aparentemente estaba acostada en la isla de la avenida. A mi hijo le causó curiosidad y se acercó. Se dio cuenta que no se movía y cuando intentó agarrarla ella no se dejó, es allí donde mi hijo percibe que tiene una herida en su patica dañada. Él es muy sensible al dolor de los animales, motivo por el cual decidió ayudarla. La llevó a casa y me mostró el estado en el que se encontraba y eso me conmovió muchísimo, así que cuando me manifestó lo que pensaba hacer decidí apoyarlo. Diariamente se le hacían sus curas con la ayuda de una amiga de mi hijo hasta que poquito a poquito su herida fue sanando.

One morning he watched her from afar. Apparently she was lying on the island in the avenue. My son was curious and approached her. He noticed that she wasn't moving and when he tried to grab her she wouldn't let him, that's when my son noticed that she had a wound on her damaged paw. He is very sensitive to the pain of animals, which is why he decided to help her. He took her home and showed me the state she was in and that moved me very much, so when he told me what he was going to do I decided to support him. She was treated daily with the help of a friend of my son's until little by little her wound was healing.

Durante el proceso y ya un poco más segura se iba todo el día a la avenida y regresaba en la noche. Pensé que en algún momento ya no regresaría más. Pero...sorpresa!!! no fue así. Llegó un momento en el que se iba solo de a raticos hasta que se quedó ¡No se quería ir! En su mirada reflejaba un gran agradecimiento. Si pudiera hablar de seguro lo diría.

During the process, and now a little safer, she would go to the avenue all day and come back at night. I thought that at some point she would never come back. But...surprise!!! it wasn't like that. There came a time when he would go off by himself a little bit at a time until he stayed. His eyes reflected a great gratitude. If he could speak he would surely say so.

En vista de esto le habilitamos un lugar para que ella estuviera lo más cómoda posible dentro de nuestras circunstancias. También había llegado el momento de ponerle un nombre. Así que la llamamos Patica. Ya se imaginarán por qué.

In view of this, we set up a place for her so that she would be as comfortable as possible within our circumstances. It was also time to give her a name. So we named her Patica. You can imagine why.

Tiene una actitud muy cariñosa y quiere ir con nosotros a todas partes. Cuando salimos nos sigue, haciendo caso omiso a nuestra orden de quedarse.

She has a very affectionate attitude and wants to go everywhere with us. When we go out she follows us, ignoring our order to stay.

Un día que salí a comprar cerca de casa ella me siguió. En el trayecto de regreso cayó en un hueco de desagüe y como estaba en una bajada se le hacía difícil salir. Luchaba con todas sus fuerzas y su corta patica. Fue un momento muy angustioso y sin nadie que nos ayudara.

One day when I was out shopping near home she followed me. On the way back she fell into a drainage hole and as it was on a downhill slope it was difficult for her to get out. She struggled with all her strength and her short paws. It was a very distressing moment with no one to help us.

Yo llevaba un paraguas y se lo coloqué por detrás para impulsarla hacia arriba. Pensé que no lo lograríamos y ella terminaría atrapada allí con terribles consecuencias. Pero valiéndose de su instinto de supervivencia y valentía y ya casi sin fuerzas por fin logró salir. Pasé un gran susto.

I was carrying an umbrella and I put it behind her to push her up. I thought we would not make it and she would end up trapped there with terrible consequences. But using her survival instinct and bravery, she finally managed to get out. I was scared to death.

Cuando regresábamos a casa las personas la veían y le huían porque estaba casi toda mojada de aguas residuales. Pobrecita.
Al llegar a casa fue una verdadera odisea bañarla. Corría por todo el porche de la casa y yo detrás de ella. Fue muy gracioso, pero por fin pude hacerlo.

When we returned home, people would see her and run away from her because she was almost all wet with sewage. Poor thing. When we got home it was a real odyssey to bathe her. She would run all over the porch of the house and I would run after her. It was very funny, but I was finally able to do it.

De más está decir que ahora somos más precavidos y más firmes con ella a la hora de salir, porque tiene una mirada que nos roba el corazón y con la que intenta convencernos para que le permitamos ir con nosotros. Y por supuesto que sale, pero cuando vamos cerca y muy bien supervisada. La cuidamos al máximo y ella está feliz.

Needless to say, we are now more cautious and more firm with her when it comes to going out, because she has a look that steals our hearts and with which she tries to convince us to let her go with us. And of course she goes out, but when we are close and very well supervised. We take care of her to the maximum and she is happy.
