Muchos tienen de mascotas perros, gatos, pajaritos, pero muy poco se habla de estas silenciosas y tranquilas criaturitas. Pues me refiero a las tortugas y hoy me gustaría presentarles una de las dos que tenemos en casa.
Ella se llama Lagertha y es una tortuguita de aproximadamente 3 años, pero que tiene con nosotros unos 7 meses.
Es hermana de la otra que tenemos, llamada Esmeralda, pero que se crio junto al resto de sus hermanas en la hacienda de los abuelos de mi esposo.
Por alguna razón que aún no entendemos, Lagertha creció mucho más que Esmeralda, pero que a pesar de su gran tamaño es súper miedosa, todo lo contrario a su hermana.

Many people have as pets dogs, cats, birds, but very little is said about these quiet and calm little creatures. Well, I am referring to turtles and today I would like to introduce you to one of the two we have at home.
Her name is Lagertha and she is about 3 years old, but she has been with us for about 7 months.
She is the sister of the other one we have, called Esmeralda, but she grew up with the rest of her sisters at my husband's grandparents' farm.
For some reason that we still don't understand, Lagertha grew up much older than Esmeralda, but in spite of her big size she is super fearful, the opposite of her sister.
Normalmente vive escondida bajo el mesón de la cocina, cosa que es bien estresante porque muchas veces me tumba los potes, tazas y ollas que tengo guardados ahí. ¡Tiene demasiada fuerza para ser tan pequeña! y además es bien persistente.
No importa cuantas veces la saque y coloque en otro sitio, ella vuelve ahí. Y uno puede dejarla ser, lo que pasa es que a veces le provoca utilizar este sitio de baño y hace unos desastres terribles. 😢😂
She usually lives hidden under the kitchen counter, which is very stressful because she often knocks over the pots, cups and pans I have stored there. She is very strong for such a little girl! and she is also very persistent.
No matter how many times I take her out and put her somewhere else, she comes back. And you can leave her be, it just happens that sometimes it provokes her to use this bathroom place and she makes terrible messes. 😢😂
Entonces lo que solemos hacer es sacarla al menos una vez al día de su escondite, darle agua y comida (matitas que crecen en los materos de la casa) y dejarla caminar un poco, para que estire sus patitas y tome un poco de sol.
A ella le encanta caminar a lugares que no ha explorado, pero suele devolverse a su lugar seguro. Muchas veces se pone creativa y cuando está la puerta que conecta al patio abierta, se nos escapa y se esconde en cualquier rincón oscuro.
So what we usually do is to take her out of her hiding place at least once a day, give her water and food (small plants that grow in the house's nursery) and let her walk around a bit, so she can stretch her legs and get some sun.
She loves to walk to places she hasn't explored, but usually returns to her safe place. Many times she gets creative and when the door that connects to the patio is open, she escapes and hides in any dark corner.

Although she likes to eat little leaves, her favorite foods are lettuce, tomatoes and ripe bananas.
Since I almost always prepare bananas as a side dish for lunch, I give her the little pieces that get caught on the ends of the shell and she loves them. ♥
Es una experiencia completamente diferente el tener una tortuga como mascota, pues ellas no se expresan como un gato o un perro, ellas no tienen la capacidad de pedirnos comida o decirnos que tienen sed, pero eso no significa que no lo expresen.
Hay veces que se nos pasa por alto sacarlas como tenemos acostumbrado hacer y ellas comienzan a dar vueltas desesperadas por toda la casa, muchas veces se ponen sentimentales y se nota porque al verlas de cerca a su carita tienen los ojos llenos de lagrimas.
Eso nos demuestra que ellas sienten y tienen sentimientos, a pesar de que si buscas en internet dice que no tienen, cosa que considero totalmente falso.
It is a completely different experience to have a turtle as a pet, because they do not express themselves like a cat or a dog, they do not have the ability to ask for food or tell us that they are thirsty, but that does not mean that they do not express it.
There are times when we forget to take them out as we are used to do and they start to walk desperately around the house, many times they become sentimental and you can see it because when you see them close to their face their eyes are full of tears.
This shows us that they feel and have feelings, although if you look on the internet it says that they don't have any, which I consider totally false.
Ellas nos han enseñado muchas cosas y nosotros las adoramos. A pesar que no tenemos tanto tiempo con Lagertha como lo hemos tenido con Esmeralda, ya se convirtió en parte de nuestra familia y siempre que aparece en la puerta de nuestro cuarto o cuando sale de su rincón preferido, nos alegramos mucho, la saludamos y acariciamos su caparazón para que sepa que es querida y tome un poco más de confianza con nosotros.
Creo que todos deberíamos tener una de estas tiernas criaturitas en casa, pues nos enseñan mucho y tienen mucho amor para dar, a su manera. ♥
They have taught us many things and we adore them. Although we don't have as much time with Lagertha as we have had with Esmeralda, she has become part of our family and whenever she appears at the door of our room or when she comes out of her favorite corner, we are very happy, we greet her and caress her shell so that she knows she is loved and gets a little more confidence with us.
I think we should all have one of these cuddly little creatures at home, as they teach us a lot and have a lot of love to give, in their own way. ♥
