The Joy of Customizing
My dog loves destroying his toys. Thank God he switched his target from our furniture after he grew up. He destroyed a chair, a sofa, a carpet, cushions, blankets, pillows, notebooks, books, and more! After he calmed down, he stopped those habits. Of course, it wasn’t entirely his fault.
We’ve changed our lifestyle a lot, especially since we started working from home, and his behaviour has improved even more. His alone time has been greatly reduced. However, he still attacks toilet rolls, blankets, or other fluffy things when he’s frustrated, stressed out, or too excited.
One of his stress-relief habits is customizing his toys. His chews are so powerful that even tough toys break quickly. After he feels he has customized them enough, he looks so confident. Still, he also feels a little sad about destroying them.
Look at his frisbee. He really enjoys catching it these days, but he just can’t stop customizing it. He doesn’t think he’s destroying it. He thinks he’s taking care of it. Poor guy, he’s a bit clumsy and doesn’t realize that he can’t use it anymore once he’s totally destroyed it. As for this frisbee, he still believes it can fly well and that he can catch it in the air. Hopefully, he won’t destroy the circle…

カスタムするよろこび
うちの犬はおもちゃを壊すのが大好きです。成長してからは、家具を狙うのをやめてくれて本当に安心しています。これまでに椅子、ソファ、カーペット、クッション、毛布、枕、ノート、そして本など、いろんなものを破壊してきました！大人になって落ち着いてからは、そうした習慣もなくなりました。もちろん、彼だけのせいというわけではありません。
私たちが生活スタイルを変えて在宅勤務を始めてからは、彼の行動がさらに落ち着きました。ひとりぼっちでお留守番する時間がかなり減ったのが変化の要因だと思います。とはいえ、イライラしたり、ストレスがたまったり、興奮しすぎたりすると、トイレットペーパーや毛布、ふわふわしたものを攻撃することはまだあります。
彼のストレス発散のひとつは、“おもちゃのカスタマイズ”です。噛む力がとても強いので、どんなに頑丈なおもちゃでもすぐに壊れてしまいます。十分にカスタマイズしたと感じると、とても誇らしげな顔をします。でも、壊してしまったことに気づくと、少し悲しくなることもあります。
このフリスビーをごらんください。最近はこれで遊ぶのが大好きなのですが、やっぱりカスタマイズをやめられません。彼にとっては壊しているのではなく、手入れをしているつもりなんです。不器用なので、完全に壊して使えなくなるまで気づかないんです。このフリスビーも、まだちゃんと飛ぶし、キャッチできると信じています。どうか、円の部分だけは壊さないでほしいものです…。

Reading your story brought back similar memories with my dog. Although your case seems more serious than ours, Rocky used to chew the edges of the sofa, the beds and rugs we bought him to sleep on, and his toys. So far, so normal. The surprising thing was the he chewed the corner of a wall. 😂 I'm glad you can now spend more time with him, especially because I can see he's still young and you're very attached to him. He has a beautiful face, is so cute, I'd love to know his name. Enjoy him and give him lots of love. Time with them goes by too quickly.

Thank you for telling me about Rocky’s story. I feel similarly about my dog, Dude, a lot! I wonder if your dog and my dog met each other, they would customize toys together, or not.😆🐶
