To Be Sterilized or Not To Be

When we considered to sterilize our cat, we tried to find out more about sterilizing cats, especially male cats. From the articles we read and also chatting with fellow cat owners, we realized that there are many advantages to neutering cats. I'll make it short:

  • Cats become calmer, don't spray indiscriminately, and don't get stressed easily.
When in heat, male cats become more aggressive, want to leave the house, fight with other males over females, and have a habit of spraying indiscriminately to mark their territory. Since we don't want him to get hurt, we will keep him in the house. But the cat will spray inside the house and get stressed because his lust is unreleased.

  • The cat's body becomes fatter and healthier, spared from the risk of diseases related to reproduction.
This is because the cat does not feel lust, so it no longer feels stressed, as when the heat is unreleased. He will become calmer and eat more. In addition, neutering male cats will reduce the risk of problems with the testicles and prostate.

  • Reducing the stray cat population.
The male cat sterilization process is to remove the scrotum or testicular sac. So, male cats will not produce sperm for impregnated female cats. Thus, the number of abandoned kittens will decrease.

However, there are several other negative assumptions about cat sterilization, which are:

  • Against the nature of the cat to breed. That's a sin.
No, it's not. It's a sin if the intention is to hurt them. Our intention is not to harm them, but to reduce the number of stray and abandoned cats in the surrounding environment. In the end, more benefits can be obtained for cats if they are neutered. So it's not a sin.
  • Poor cats that have never been mated are going to be neutered. Once sterilized, they cannot experience mating and won't have offspring.
Not to me. It would be even more sad if he mates and impregnates a female cat indiscriminately, there will be unwanted kittens that are born and may be abandoned. I feel more sorry for cats and kittens who are homeless, abandoned, hungry, thrown away, sick, hurt, abused, etc. After all, a male cat will still be able to mate if a female cat teases him; it's just that he can't impregnate the female cat.
  • It is better to let the cat mate first, then sterilize it. So he had a chance to reproduce.
Not really. It depends on the condition of the cat and its owner. For us with uncertain finances, having just one cat adds up to a significant cost of living. But we are trying to fulfill his needs. If Rainy gets mated and has offspring, we must take good care of the female cat and the kittens. That will add more cost. Frankly, we can't afford that yet.
  • Male cats do not need to be neutered because they won't get pregnant. Only female cats need to be neutered.
Nope. The cat may not be pregnant, but he will impregnate a female cat. Male cats still need to be neutered so that they don't mate with female cats indiscriminately, resulting in impregnated female cats giving birth somewhere without being cared for, and increasing the number of abandoned kittens. Unless the cat owner is able to take care of the female cat and the kittens too.

  • Expensive. Better to use the money for more important purposes.
Luckily, there are free, subsidized, or promo sterilization programs in various cities in my country. The cost is so much cheaper. Sterilization is also important because it involves the welfare of animals as fellow living beings. If you don't have a budget, save first. Fortunately, we still have enough savings.

It didn't take much consideration, we immediately decided to sterilize Rainy. When he reaches 8 months old, I've signed him up for sterilization. And, on July 28, Rainy was officially sterilized! I will post about it later.

Thanks for dropping by. Have a nice day!

Hello there! 😍

Esterilizar a los gatos machos tiene sus ventajas, me encantó el post. Yo por no esterilizar a mi gato macho nunca más volvió y de eso aprendí mucho :(

Sorry to hear about your cat. Hope he's fine out there..
