Hace poco, el 15 de marzo, se cumplió un año desde que esterilicé a mi gata Guillermina, y quise hacer esta publicación para contarles los cambios que he notado en ella desde entonces.
Recently, on March 15, it was one year since I spayed my cat Guillermina, and I wanted to make this post to tell you about the changes I have noticed in her since then.
Debo decir que me tardé demasiado, porque Guillermina ya tenía 9 años cuando la operaron, y los motivos por los que no lo hice antes son varios: a) vive en apartamento y no sale a la calle, por lo tanto no había riesgo de que quedara preñada, b) no guardaba el dinero necesario para eso porque "ya lo haría en cualquier momento", c) me daba miedo, d) entre otras excusas...
I must say that I took too long, because Guillermina was already 9 years old when she was operated, and the reasons why I didn't do it before are several: a) she lives in an apartment and does not go outside, so there was no risk of getting pregnant, b) I didn't save the money needed for that because "I would do it at any time", c) I was afraid, d) among other excuses...
Los veterinarios dicen que lo ideal es que después de que tu mascota tenga su primer celo, procedas a esterilizarla, no sólo para evitar sobrepoblación y que los gatos o perros terminen en la calle, sino también porque esta operación beneficia su salud. En las hembras, por ejemplo, evita que sufran de enfermedades en el útero u ovarios, como piometra, cáncer, ovarios poliquísticos y otras relacionadas con las hormonas, y en los machos elimina la posibilidad de que desarrollen cáncer, prostatitis, hernias perianales, entre otras patologías, y también que se metan en peleas y salgan heridos o muertos o que contraigan enfermedades de transmisión sexual.
Veterinarians say that the ideal is that after your pet has its first heat, you proceed to sterilize it, not only to avoid overpopulation and cats or dogs end up in the street, but also because this operation benefits their health. Cuando Guillermina comenzó a tener sus celos, ví que eran muy intensos, le duraban como una semana y su comportamiento era bastante escandaloso. Maullaba durísimo, orinaba en cualquier lado, casi no comía, y aunque se mostraba más cariñosa restregándose contra todo, también se ponía muy agresiva.
When Guillermina began to have her heats, I saw that they were very intense, they lasted about a week and her behavior was quite scandalous. She meowed very hard, peed everywhere, hardly ate, and although she was more affectionate, rubbing against everything, she was also very aggressive.
La situación era bastante insoportable, pero yo no estaba muy al tanto porque en sus primeros 4 años y medio de vida, sólo la veía los fines de semana ya que trabajaba en otra ciudad, pero mi mamá me contaba, y mi hermana también. Luego cuando viví el asunto de cerca, me di cuenta de que era urgente operarla, finalmente tomé la decisión el año pasado cuando vi que un veterinario conocido iba a realizar unas jornadas de esterilización a bajo costo ($30).
The situation was quite unbearable, but I was not very aware of it because in her first 4 and a half years of life, I only saw her on weekends since I worked in another city, but my mom told me about it, and my sister too. Then when I lived the matter closely, I realized that it was urgent to operate her, finally I made the decision last year when I saw that a well-known veterinarian was going to perform some spaying and neutering sessions at low cost ($30).
Llegó el día, 15 de marzo de 2023, y como a las 10:00 am ya estábamos en el consultorio veterinario, mi hermana me acompañó. Guillermina estaba muy asustada, como siempre que la he tenido que sacar a la calle, además no entendía por qué no le había dado ni comida ni agua, eran instrucciones pre-operatorias para que no le sentara mal la anestesia.
The day arrived, March 15, 2023, and at about 10:00 am we were already at the vet's office, my sister accompanied me. Guillermina was very scared, as always when I had to take her out, and she didn't understand why I had not given her any food or water, they were pre-operative instructions so that the anesthesia would not make her feel bad.
Como era una jornada de esterilización y vendrían varias personas, no permitían que me quedara esperando a que la operaran y luego llevármela, me dijeron que tenía que dejarla en los kennels que había allí y ellos me avisarían después del mediodía para que fuera a buscarla, eso me causó una gran angustia, pero no tenía otra opción. La puse allí y me fui a mi casa a esperar.
As it was a sterilization day and several people would come, they didn't allow me to wait for her to be operated on and then take her away, they told me that I had to leave her in the kennels there and they would let me know after noon so I could go and pick her up, that caused me great anguish, but I had no other option. I put her there and went home to wait.
Ya eran más de las 2:00 de la tarde y nada que me llamaban, y me daba miedo llamar yo y que me dijeran que algo salió mal, pero lo hice, y cuando me respondieron que ya la habían operado y podía ir a buscarla, sentí un enorme alivio. Cuando llegué ya había despertado de la anestesia y el veterinario me mostró la herida, le pusimos la faja que le hizo mi hermana para que no se sacara los puntos, me dio un récipe con una medicina que tenía que comprarle (Cefadroxilo en suspensión 250 mg / 5 ml) y las instrucciones del post-operatorio. Además, como yo no tenía un transportador y no era recomendable llevármela cargada en un bolso, me prestaron uno.
It was already after 2:00 in the afternoon and they didn't call me, and I was afraid to call and they would tell me that something had gone wrong, but I did, and when they told me that they had already operated on her and I could go and pick her up, I felt a huge relief. When I arrived she had already woken up from the anesthesia and the vet showed me the wound, we put the bandage my sister had made for her so she wouldn't pull out the stitches, he gave me a receipt with some medicine I had to buy for her (Cefadroxil suspension 250 mg / 5 ml) and the post-op instructions. Also, since I didn't have a carrier and it was not advisable to carry her in a bag, they lent me one.
Pasamos por la farmacia antes de ir a la casa, compré el antibiótico, y al llegar la saqué del transportador, ella estaba como perdida y caminaba tambaleándose. El veterinario me había dicho que el efecto de la anestesia duraría unas 12 horas, y que no me preocupara, que era normal que estuviera así.
We went to the pharmacy before going to the house, I bought the antibiotic, and when we arrived I took her out of the carrier, she was kind of lost and was walking staggering. The vet had told me that the effect of the anesthesia would last about 12 hours, and not to worry, that it was normal for her to be like that.
Pero igual me daba mucha pena verla así, además me dio un gran susto un rato después cuando caminó a la cocina y de repente se acostó debajo de un mueble y no se movía, la toqué para hacerla reaccionar y después de unos segundos levantó la cabeza, fue horrible, pensé lo peor, y mi mamá también se angustió mucho, luego ella la puso en una alfombra en su cuarto, para que reposara mejor.
But I was still very sad to see her like that, and she gave me a big scare a while later when she walked to the kitchen and suddenly lay down under a piece of furniture and did not move, I touched her to make her react and after a few seconds she raised her head, it was horrible, I thought the worst, and my mom was also very distressed, then she put her on a rug in her room, so she could rest better.
Luego se fue a acostar en otro lado, en el sillón que comparte con la otra gata de la casa, quien por cierto vino y la olió. Mientras estuvo ahí parecía delirar, estaba medio dormida y movía las patas de forma extraña.
Then she went to lie down somewhere else, on the couch she shares with the other cat in the house, who by the way came and sniffed her. While she was there she seemed delirious, she was half asleep and moved her paws strangely.
Tarde en la noche le pusimos de comer y comió, aunque luego lo vomitó, y también tomó un poco de agua y le di su medicina. Al ir pasando el efecto de la anestesia supongo que ella sentía más el dolor de la herida, creo que no podía dormir, la primera noche la pasó con mi mamá, y los días siguientes conmigo hasta que su herida se secó bien y volvió a dormir en su lugar de siempre con Zé Pequeña, su compañera gatuna.
Late at night we fed her and she ate, although later she vomited, and she also drank some water and I gave her medicine. As the anesthesia wore off I guess she felt the pain of the wound more, I think she couldn't sleep, the first night she spent with my mom, and the following days with me until her wound dried well and she went back to sleep in her usual place with Zé Pequeña, her cat companion.
Al día siguiente de la operación la llevé al veterinario para que la evaluara, le inyectaron un analgésico, y diez días después volvimos para que le quitaran los puntos. La herida estaba perfectamente cicatrizada y ya el pelaje de su panza le estaba creciendo.
The day after the operation I took her to the vet for an evaluation, she was injected with an analgesic, and ten days later we returned to have the stitches removed. The wound was perfectly healed and her belly fur was already growing.
Como ven, todo salió bien, y los cambios que ha tenido Guillermina desde su esterilización han sido varios, por supuesto el principal es que ya no le da celo y no anda haciendo escándalos ni orinando por ahí jajaja, otro es que su carácter mejoró mucho, ok, no ha dejado la maña de morder todo 😂, pero se volvió más cariñosa y tranquila, y también, no sé si tenga que ver con la esterilización, pero no ha tenido más problemas con la arenilla en su orina, algo que la afectó un par de veces, y aunque no llegó a ser grave, me preocupaba.
As you can see, everything went well, and the changes that Guillermina has had since her sterilization have been several, of course the main one is that she is no longer in heat and is not making scandals or peeing around hahaha, another is that her character improved a lot, ok, she hasn't stopped biting everything 😂, but she became more affectionate and calm, and also, I don't know if it has to do with the sterilization, but she hasn't had any more problems with urine grit, something that affected her a couple of times, and although it wasn't serious, it worried me.
Y bueno, esta ha sido mi experiencia, si ustedes aún no lo han hecho, les recomiendo 100% que esterilicen a sus mascotas, se benefician tanto ellos como nosotros.

Esterilizar es lo mejor que uno, como dueño, debe hacer, así se gaste dinero, pero es solo una vez, todo por la salud de nuestras mascotas. Que linda es Guillermina le ha ido bien, y los gatos (algunos), con los años van cambiando poco a poco su comportamiento. Saludos 🤗

Sentía lo mismo, pero de verdad no hay por qué temer, es una operación de bajo riesgo y siempre y cuando tu gato esté sano, no hay problema. A Guillermina le hicieron su exámen de sangre antes para descartar cualquier cosa.

Saludos que bueno que la esterilizaste, es lo mejor para las gatitas porque sufren mucho como mamas, el destete, aunque se que es normal tienen muchos partos seguidos y los celos son interminables.

Que gran alivio no tener que cerrar las puertas y las ventanas de mi cuarto, quitar todas las cosas que estaban en el piso y estar pendiente de no dejar zapatos a su alcance, bastaba un descuido para que Guillermina fuera y orinaba todo 🥴😬🤦🏻♀️. Era realmente agotador y molesto. En cuanto a su carácter 🙄, mejoró como un 5% jajaja, sigue teniendo un carácter de los mil demonios 😬🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻♀️.
Te faltó decir que el ayudante del veterinario le dijo que era barrigona 🤭🤭🤭.
