But what can you do? You can't do more than make sure the cats and kittens have enough to eat, can you?

One by one, all the kittens of the same age died. Whenever they were strong enough and explored the backyard, they first developed eye problems and then a real rot in their mouths, which ate its way from the inside out.
I tried all kinds of remedies, but nothing helped. And as I'm still without a vet here, I'll have to keep guessing what's causing it.

Either it's a genetic disease, which is always passed on here thanks to incest. Or it's much simpler. There are lots of toads here that are poisonous. The toads are nocturnal and so slow that they are the ideal toy for young kittens. This would also explain the diseases. The kittens get it in their eyes when they clean themselves after playing with the toads or directly when they bite.
In any case, Mr. Red survived it, even though he was also after it because he couldn't eat for almost a week.

A cat gave birth to her first kitten the day before yesterday, and in a few weeks it will start again, the anxiety about whether the kitten or kittens will make it.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

How unfortunate that the kittens died, you have some hypotheses, like the toads, but, it is only a guess. You must be attentive to know the real reason and avoid future deaths. What a pity that you don't have veterinary help, this situation is worrying, you really needed it, maybe it would have helped you to find out the cause of their illness and even save them. Greetings.

Well, perhaps I see things a little more differently, even if it pains me.
I only really needed the vet to sterilize our cats. But after that, their territorial instinct wanes and the backyard becomes the neighborhood cats' stomping ground.
Secondly, all the kittens in the last picture are foundlings, usually abandoned far too young and still dependent on their mother's milk. We live on an out-of-town road and many people think it's a good idea to drop their kittens off here.
If I had any odds other than 20 to 1 (one in 20 makes it through the first year), we would be buried under cats.
Sad though it is.

Ja so unverständlich es für viele sein mag, irgendwie muss sich die Natur wohl selbst regulieren 😔
Ich meine, stell dir vor alle hätten überlebt und würden sich weiter vermehren...

I miss Veka ❤️ she was such a pretty thing

Das stimmt natürlich auch. Ich bin trotzdem neugierig, wie es dieses Jahr wird.
