WHY PEOPLE REGRET AT OLD AGE: (grandma said it all)

True life story for every 21st century vagabond

In 2006, right behind my apartment at Old Otta Road, ORILE Agege, Lagos State Nigeria. there lived this elderly Jehovah's Witness woman who used to cry for no reason, you know, as old women tend to do. Honestly, we all thought it was just an old-cargo stuff or probably as a result of inability to go out like she used to and her reliance on her children for everything.

However, everything changed one day when grandma started crying from early morning till evening. She cried so hard, even praying to God to end her life because she was filled with regret about things she hadn't done well enough. I was there that day with her children, and her explanations were so heartbreaking that all of us started crying too. Oh God of Nazareth, have mercy. 😪😪😳😳

This all began after her husband passed away, and her kids got married. It's a longer story, but I'll try to keep it short so we can all learn something today.

Based on what I can remember, she said:

1. Marrying the Wrong Person

Imagine you're in your twenties, deeply in love, and ready to get married. But hold on, are you marrying for the right reasons? Getting married just to fit in, keep up with friends, or because others expect it can lead to a lifetime of sadness. Instead, marry for love and friendship. Your spouse should be your best buddy, someone who shares your dreams and values. Choosing the wrong partner can bring you a lot of sadness.

She married a man who drank too much, despite her parents warning her not to. Her life was filled with regret because of that choice.

2. Missing Opportunities

As young adults, we often miss out on great chances because we're scared, lazy, or too proud. Picture this: you have a fantastic idea, a shot at starting your own business, but you hesitate. Later in life, you'll wish you had taken that chance. Don't let fear hold you back; grab opportunities while you're young and full of energy.

3. Hurting Relationships

In our quest for success, we sometimes forget how important our relationships are. We may use or hurt people to get ahead, not realizing that this can come back to hurt us. As you grow older, you'll understand that life is empty without love and friends.

Value your relationships because trust and real connections are more important than any success.

4. Regretting Abortion

For young women facing an unexpected pregnancy, choosing to have an abortion can seem like the only option. But as time passes and you achieve success, you might regret not becoming a mother. Being a single mom doesn't mean you can't have a great life. The joy of raising a child can be priceless.

5. Walking Away from Parenthood

Young men, think about this: if you walk away from your responsibilities as a father, you might regret it when you're older. Don't miss the chance to be a dad and see your child grow into an adult. You can't turn back time, so step up and be a good parent.

6. Ruining Your Marriage

You might have had a loving marriage, but if you let it fall apart due to cheating and selfishness, you'll realize how foolish that was later in life. Fix the damage while you still can because the pain of lost love can haunt you in old age.

7. Ignoring Faith

As we get older, many of us find comfort and wisdom in a relationship with God. But don't wait until you're old to seek spiritual fulfillment. Start building that connection when you're young. Avoid being rebellious and only turning to faith when you're older.

8. Neglecting Your Health

Your body is with you for life. Neglecting it with habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and an unhealthy diet can lead to regret later on. Take care of your body now to avoid health problems in your fifties.

9. Wasting Time

Every day, we waste time worrying, in meaningless relationships, being lazy, and chasing fruitless pursuits. Remember, >time is precious and can't be recovered. Use it wisely to avoid regret in the future.

10. Ignoring Your Dreams and Talents

Do you have dreams and talents you've put aside? Embrace them, even if you face setbacks. Regret often comes when you see others succeed in what you love. Chase your passions and build a fulfilling life.

11. Tarnishing Your Reputation

Your reputation matters, and it's shaped by your daily actions. Avoid harming your own name with careless behavior. Your legacy reflects how you've lived your life.

12. Wasting Money

If you earn a good income during your working years, be smart with it. Don't spend it recklessly. Secure your future and leave something for your loved ones.

13. Letting Love Slip Away

Don't push away real love. Recognize its value and cherish it. Losing a special connection can be a lasting source of regret.

14. Appreciating Your Parents

As you grow older, you'll likely understand your parents better. Don't wait until they're gone or elderly to make amends and appreciate their role in your life.

Conclusion

Honestly, this life is not fair at all because life is a journey full of risk, choices, some of which can lead to regret or success as you grow older.

I hope we will make choices that lead to a life with fewer regrets.

But before I pin my fingers, Remember life is one chance so please value your relationships, your health, and your dreams because they are the building blocks of a satisfying life that minimizes regret in your later years.

Also remember, time doesn't wait for anyone; make the most of each moment.
