Netflix For Edutainment
I have three very different children in our little homeschool but if there is one thing they share in common, it is watching videos. While we mostly do not let them spend a lot of time in front of the screen, there will just be time when we compromise and they can watch a few episodes (provided they finish all their school work and house chores).
A couple of years ago, my eldest, then nine years old, put out a compilation of his Top 5 Favorite Videos. Most of them were seen on Youtube - Like Dr. Binocs Show, It's AumSum Time, Wild Kratts, and even Larva.
Today, I asked them again -- Kuya Roulan, 12 years; Gabbie, 7 years, and Janjan, 5 years -- about their favorite Netflix Shows. Here are again five, in no particular order.
@Divinekids Top 5 Netflix Educational Shows Recommendations:
BrainChild
R: 7+
From germs and emotions to social media and more, it's the science of your world explained in a way that's refreshingly relatable.
Trailer:
Why do you like BrainChild?
I like BrainChild because it gives very good details on different lessons. There are demonstrations and examples so it is easier for me to understand concepts. Example, there is an episode about germs where people dress up as germs and white blood cells to demonstrate what they do to the body.
-- Kuya Roulan
BrainChild is sometimes still difficult for me to understand but I like watching it because it is entertaining.
-- Gabbie
InBESTigators
R: For All
Four clever school kids start their own detective agency and vlog about their adventures, becoming fast friends in the process.
Trailer:
Why do you like InBESTigators?
I like to watch InBESTigators because it is nice to watch and we like to learn detective skills.
-- Gabbie
I love it when the kids solve mysteries. It becomes interesting because you don't know what is happening at first until you slowly figure it out. You can also play along with their mystery and solve it before they do.
There are also funny parts, thanks to Kyle.
-- Kuya Roulan
StoryBots
R: For ALL
Five inquisitive little creatures track down the answers to kids' biggest questions, like how night happens or why we need to brush our teeth.
Trailer:
Why do you Like StoryBots?
I like StoryBots because each character has different personalities and every time they finish a question that a kid asks, they put it into a song. The characters actually live inside a computer and when a kid sends a question, they come out and find answers by asking different people (and animals).
-- Kuya Roulan
I like StoryBots because it is funny and the blue guy acts weirdly. I also learn a lot of things from it.
-- Gabbie
I like StoryBots because they are small and they are funny. I like the story about the vaccuum.
-- Janjan
Emily's Wonder Lab
Rating: For All
Science-loving host Emily Calandrelli makes STEAM fun with activities, demonstrations and at-home experiments that'll make you think — and blow your mind!
Trailer:
Why do you like Emily's Wonder Lab?
I like Emily's Wonder Lab because they do lots of cool stuff that we can learn from, and we can do them at home too!
-- Gabbie
I like Emily's Wonder Lab because every time Emily has ideas and experiments she calls kids to join her so they can also experience the experiments. We also learn from it. At the end of the video, Emily will also show an experiment that we can do at home.
-- Kuya Roulan
I like Emily's Wonder Lab because I want to stuff that is amazing. Emily's Wonder Lab does lots of amazing stuffs!
-- Janjan
The Magic School Bus Rides Again
R: 7+
Ms. Frizzle's kid sister Fiona takes the wheel at Walkerville Elementary, leading the class on wild adventures packed with science-fueled fun.
Trailer:
Why do you like The Magic School Bus Rides Again?
I like Magic School Bus because it is magical because of the school bus, and because of their interesting teacher, Ms. Frizzle. Their adventures are very interesting and we get to meet Ms. Frizzle's friends every episode.
-- Kuya Roulan
They go into small things and they shrink! There are also three other Magic School Bus movies that shows lessons that are not in the episodes.
--Gabbie
I learn new stuff and I like it when they sing their song.
--Janjan
Other Netflix Shows We Recommend
While the above are their favorite, here are other shows they love to watch too:
- Carmen San Diego - teaches geography
- Bake Squad - very good bakers and the cakes make us hungry!
- Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (Movie) - teaches us to love the environment
How about you?
What Netflix recommendations do you have for edutainment?

Carmen Sandiego!?! Is that still around!?!? Netflix is my educational tool too. I watch Japanese shows with Japanese subtitles and study the grammar.
You can also expose them to foreign cultures on there. Some of it is not for kids though…
Yup, there are 3 seasons of Carmen San Diego available to watch at Netflix.
Im so poor with language. I never really learned anything else apart from English and my mother tongue. 16 years here in the UAE and i never learned Arabic, apart from a few words. 🙈 But i agree watching with subtitles is a great way to learn.
Is it the old game show!? I need to go check it out! I loved that when I was a kid

I wouldn't have thought of Netflix for educational shows.
I like the quotes and feedback from the kids here. 😊
Hehe. Yeah. But need to stay vigilant since the kinds will tend to label just about anything as educational. 😁
