En la actualidad parece que la tecnología no tiene rival en cuanto a diversión infantil se refiere, dejando casi en el olvido los divertidos juegos tradicionales con los que los adultos de hoy pasamos tantos y divertidos ratos en nuestra niñez. Pero estos juegos tienen muchos beneficios, por en esta oportunidad quiero hablarles particularmente del juego conocido en Venezuela como el avioncito, también llamado rayuela en otros lugares, aunque el nombre puede ser distinto en otros países.

Nowadays it seems that technology has no rival when it comes to children's fun, leaving almost forgotten the fun traditional games with which today's adults spent so many fun times in our childhood. But these games have many benefits, so this time I want to talk particularly about the game known in Venezuela as the little plane, also called hopscotch in other places, although the name may be different in other countries.
Hace un tiempo me sorprendió que la tarea de un viernes de mi hijo fuera jugar este juego, la verdad hemos jugado muchos juegos que implican actividad física, pero más bien son deportes como futbol o lanzar la pelota, siendo sinceros no habíamos pensado en juegos como este.
A while ago I was surprised that my son's Friday homework assignment was to play this game, the truth is that we have played many games that involve physical activity, but they are more like sports like soccer or throwing the ball, to be honest we had not thought of games like this one.
Como padres sabemos que los juegos son muy importantes para los niños, no solo porque les brindan entretenimiento, sino también porque estimulan y van perfeccionando diferentes componentes del desarrollo infantil, como el cognitivo, emocional, social y físico. Por eso quise indagar un poco más en como este juego tradicional se puede utilizar como componente lúdico del aprendizaje y que beneficios le aporta al desarrollo de los niños, puesto que estos juegos tradicionales, pasado de generación en generación, no fueron diseñados para educar sino más bien para divertir a quienes lo practicaban.
As parents we know that games are very important for children, not only because they provide entertainment, but also because they stimulate and perfect different components of child development, such as cognitive, emotional, social and physical. That is why I wanted to find out more about how this traditional game can be used as a playful component of learning and what benefits it brings to the development of children, since these traditional games, passed from generation to generation, were not designed to educate but rather to amuse those who played them.
Recordemos como se juega // Let's remember how to play
Este es el clásico juego infantil de pintar recuadros con números en el piso y saltarlos con un solo pie. Por lo que en seguida nos podemos dar cuenta que a un niño en su etapa inicial de educación lo motiva a contar y a escribir los números, además de que los saltos que debe dar le ayudan en su coordinación y equilibrio. Veamos cómo se juega, al menos como lo conozco.
This is the classic children's game of painting boxes with numbers on the floor and jumping over them with only one foot. So right away we can see that it motivates a child in his early stages of education to count and write the numbers, plus the jumps he has to make help his coordination and balance. Let's see how to play, at least as I know it.
Primero debemos empezar por dibujar en el suelo con una tiza el diagrama para jugarlo. Este diagrama está compuesto de una serie de recuadros con los números del 1 al 10, comenzando con un solo recuadro donde se escribe el número uno, luego le siguen una pareja de recuadros donde se escriben el dos y el tres, para continuar con uno solo con el número cuatro y nuevamente una pareja con el cinco y seis, y así sucesivamente hasta ubicar el 10 al otro extremo del diagrama. El tamaño de los recuadros puede variar según la edad de los niños que participaran.
First we must start by drawing on the floor with a chalk the diagram to play it. This diagram is composed of a series of boxes with the numbers from 1 to 10, starting with a single box where the number one is written, then followed by a pair of boxes where the numbers two and three are written, to continue with a single box with the number four and again a pair with the numbers five and six, and so on until the number 10 is located at the other end of the diagram. The size of the boxes may vary according to the age of the children who will participate.
Para jugarlo se necesita de una piedra plana o un objeto con esta forma, y el niño que va a jugar se ubica detrás de la primera casilla, luego lanza la piedra la cual no debe salirse del diagrama ni tocar los bordes, y el recuadro donde caiga no se puede pisar.
To play it you need a flat stone or an object with this shape, and the child who is going to play stands behind the first square, then throws the stone which must not go out of the diagram or touch the edges, and the square where it falls cannot be stepped on.
Entonces, se empieza a recorrer el diagrama dando saltos en los cuadrados con un solo pie, y apoyando ambos bien en los cuadrados emparejados. La idea es recorrer el diagrama ida y vuelta sin perder el equilibrio, lo que le daría el turno al siguiente participante.
Then, you start going around the diagram jumping on the squares with only one foot, and resting both feet on the paired squares. The idea is to run the diagram back and forth without losing your balance, which would give the next participant the turn.
Casi olvidaba, al hacer el recorrido inverso, se debe parar antes del recuadro donde está la piedra para agacharse y recogerla antes de terminar en el punto de partida.
I almost forgot, when doing the reverse route, you must stop before the square where the stone is to bend down and pick it up before finishing at the starting point.
Cuando se pierde el equilibrio y se pisa fuera de los cuadros o la piedra se sale del diagrama se pierde el turno y pasa el siguiente jugador.
When the player loses balance and steps outside the squares or the stone goes out of the diagram, the turn is lost and the next player passes.
¿Qué lo hace fantástico para el desarrollo de los niños? // What makes it great for children's development?
Primeramente debemos decir que los niños pasan un rato divertido en el patio de la casa, sacándolos de sus habitaciones para que hagan algo de actividad física al aire libre. Y como les decía, los pequeños aprenden a reconocer los números y a numerar posiciones.
First of all, the kids have a fun time in the backyard, getting them out of their rooms to do some physical activity outdoors. And as I was saying, the little ones learn to recognize numbers and number positions.
Pero además favorece el desarrollo de habilidades psicomotrices en los niños, entre ellas el equilibrio y la coordinación. El equilibrio es una habilidad motora muy importante para los niños que tiene grandes beneficios para el proceso cognitivo, la relación que los niños tienen con el equilibrio define como experimenta con su entorno y como se adapta a él, dándole conciencia de su cuerpo y de las direcciones en el espacio, algo vital para su desarrollo cognitivo, emocional y social.
But it also favors the development of psychomotor skills in children, including balance and coordination. Balance is a very important motor skill for children that has great benefits for the cognitive process, the relationship that children have with balance defines how they experience their environment and how they adapt to it, giving them awareness of their body and directions in space, something vital for their cognitive, emotional and social development.
Igualmente, durante el juego los niños deben coordinar ojos y manos, para establecer la fuerza, dirección y distancia necesaria para lanzar la piedra en el recuadro que desea. Igualmente se requiere de coordinación de ojos y pies para poder desplazarse y conducirse a través del diagrama, por cada cuadro dando saltos.
Likewise, during the game the children must coordinate eyes and hands to establish the force, direction and distance necessary to throw the stone in the desired square. Likewise, eye and foot coordination is required to be able to move and move through the diagram, jumping across each square.
Otro de los beneficios de este tipo de juegos es que les permite desarrollar paciencia y autocontrol, ya que deben respetar las reglas del juego, esperar nuevamente su turno y manejar sus emociones si es que salen del juego por perder el equilibrio, y sabemos que tener autocontrol no es tarea sencilla, por lo que debemos encontrar estrategias adecuadas para conseguirlo.
Another benefit of this type of games is that it allows them to develop patience and self-control, since they must respect the rules of the game, wait their turn again and manage their emotions if they get out of the game because they lose their balance, and we know that having self-control is not an easy task, so we must find appropriate strategies to achieve it.
En definitiva, este tradicional juego tiene muchos beneficios, y juegos como este durante la infancia son muy importantes para un desarrollo motriz adecuado y por supuesto emocional y cognitivo.
In short, this traditional game has many benefits, and games like this during childhood are very important for proper motor development and of course emotional and cognitive development.

It is really impressive what a simple game can do when it comes to the initial enjoyment of learning, each one of us is able to use every little detail of daily life to make it a meaningful learning experience for our children, as you were able to demonstrate with the airplane game.
