Penguin Learning Activities for kids 🐧🐧

in Home Edders β€’ last year

Hello friends and community,

I think this will be my last post on Winter theme learning ideas as Spring is almost here.
There are another interesting themes and topics to learn about as the seasons are constantly changing.

Between our daily routine, little things around the house and with days passing by, we studied Penguins and I found some worksheets on the theme too, but learning was focusing on a few skills like Math and Counting, English Language or Coloring and Fine motor skills.

Color the penguin

This was exactly the opposite on how i imagined it. Caleb colored this penguin so... unaesthetic, so bad coloring πŸ˜…πŸ§ compared with how he usually color or how correct can he do it.

But I didnt say nothing...nothing to make him feel bad about it.

I was a bit dissapointed though and I said

if you weren't in the mood to color this cute penguin, than you should say so. But this is not your best...

Count the penguins

This is a good idea for children in their early days learning how to count.
As Caleb is far ahead counting, I did this mostly to see his interest in it. And because I was sure he would enjoy it, even though he knows multiplications from 2 and a half.

It was a bit fun because as I put everything on his little table, doing some photos, he took the worksheet with the eggs and started to cut it.
Do you remember I told you he's in a phase where using scissors to cut paper is his thing of the moment? He's not over it. Not just yet! πŸ˜…

So we worked on his fine motor skills by using scissors and using the glue.

How to draw a penguin

I think this is a good, fun activity and an interesting one too.
It was a bit fun the result though.
How Caleb draw the penguins is fun enough, those look like birds, but surely not penguins.
You wouldnt know they're penguins if I wouldnt say so. πŸ˜πŸ˜…
But overall, it was a good practice to follow instructions and trying to go with this step by step draw lessons.

I drew the 4th penguin, as you can see. I'm not an artist myself! πŸ˜…πŸ§
Caleb had a good try with the second one, I think it's his best.
The last two ones are like zombies OMG. Penguin zombies πŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈπŸ§

Penguin Measuring

How TALL is the penguin?

This was my favorite activity because it involves working on many cognitive levels like Math skills, concentration, patience, problem solving, writting skills.

Caleb was super involved with this activity and he enjoyed it (he was excited to use his numberblocks cubes πŸ’“πŸ’“).

At first, I presented what he has to do and that would be to measure the penguins by using little cubes, instead of metric system.

He had to write down how many cubes Tall is every penguin.

Life Cycle of a Penguin

This is the moment we started to use our books and study these creatures.

We had at hand a book from National Geographic Kids and another one called Encyclopedia of animals from which we took our information and learning dose.
It's not our first time reading about penguins.
Caleb had a favorite book we used to read it all the time last summer called "Piripi and his friends". Its about one penguin going to kindergarden in where they learn how to act and behave.

At first, penguins lay eggs and then they're becoming baby penguins.

They have a down (fluff) on their body that keeps them warm.

After a period of time, when they grow enough, their down falls and they get their adult plumage.

Feed the penguin

This was a great one for language skills.

We played this game of feeding the penguin. Penguins eat fish...right?

We studied English words. I spelled every word. Caleb recognized some of them just by looking of them. And there were words he didnt know or didnt remember.
There were also words he didnt understand well, for example the mug or van. I used my phone to take a look on those words, in order to have an efficient learning time.

I tried to group the words, as you can see in the photos below.
Pig - Fig
Van - Fan
..

I hope you'll find our activities an inspiration and give you some ideas for future learning time.

Thank you all for reading,

Love Missdeli
