The Women of Venezuelan Hive

in #hive2 years ago (edited)

If any of you are following the Hive presence at #caracasblockchainweek, or indeed any of the other Hive events in Venezuela, have you noticed how women-driven our community there is?

The Significance of Women in Hive

Having women involved and even leading in a project is a sign that it has broad appeal, and that it is a space open to everyone. It has always been a weakness of the crypto space that it is nearly exclusively men, with most events being between 10 or 20 to 1 male to female. It's not that an equal representation is required just for its own sake, but that it is a sign of how it appeals to people and a projects openness to anyone. Being dominated by one gender is an indication that a project still has very narrow appeal or has high barriers to entry.

One of the things I found quite regretful when I went to #hivefest this year in Amsterdam, was just how few women there were involved. Prior Steemfests had been a crypto exception, with only 2 to 1 men to women, dramatically more equal representation than most events in the space. This year was the first time I have seen us having a similar ratio to typical blockchain conferences.

Activity on Hive is pretty low right now amidst the bear market, but one of the signs for optimism I can see is the number of meetups that are still taking place, and that in the places were Hive is really popular, it is clear that it is popular among men and women alike. The same can be seen in other places such as Cebu, Philippines, which is the third largest regional community we have here on Hive, and also in Argentina where another large meetup was had recently.

I did not ask for permission to share the images that Hivers posted of their meetups above. I believe and hope that I have given proper credit though. If anyone has any problem with the inclusion of their photos here I can edit the post to remove them.

Hey @demotruk! No worries, Glad you pick the right photo. 😂 Hopefully, in the coming years, we will see more women leaders standing at the forefront.

But yeah.. curious how you felt and experience HiveFest this year...

Hive brings people together, it is very interesting the experiences that can be lived little by little in the ecosystem. It's wonderful to see this around here. : )
