Hot vote and Cold vote - 7 Day Rule - Simple change in Design makes a big difference for Users and Authors!

in #hive4 years ago (edited)

Usability and simplicity is a key factor if we want Hive to succeed. And sometimes its really simple to make a big difference! The underlying System is so complex, that a normal User is overstrained by all the information he needs to understand if he wants to have success as Blogger.

Why not make some Informations self-explaining in a way, that the Users can explore and find out how things work by themself?

Whats a hot vote?

A hot vote is a vote that is paid to the Author because the Content is younger than 7 Days. These Votes have the Standard voting Value the user can set in their Backend. If a vote is "hot" the Slider will go to that predefined Value.

This is just a quick edit in gimp. Think of it, as you would see the colors of the Hive Logo. 😉

Whats a cold vote?

A cold vote is a vote that is on a Post who is older than 7 Days. This Vote will not be paid to the Author. This means it is almost useless to vote with more than 1%. A cold vote shows that somebody still likes the content. But it would be a pity for the Author to see big votes go "wasted" because his Post is old. On the other side, the Message "This Post is too old", stops Users from Voting and giving credit to older Posts. Let the Authors know if old Posts are still valuable for the Users!

This is why a cold vote should automatically change colors and the vote slider to 1%. Also, the Slider should move from its preset value to 1% in a quick Animation. This should be activated by default in the User Settings. Then you can remove the "Old Post" Message and people will begin to vote for old Posts too with 1% to give some credit. KISS! 😘

Notify Vote

We can even take this one step further. If you already voted on an old posting or if you really want to give credit (again), it could look like this:
notify vote.JPG

If you click on the NOTIFY Button, a little Message appears.

"Do you want to ask the Author to leave a comment so you can vote it (again)?"

YES or NO

If you click on the YES Button, peakd sends a comment to the voted Post:

"Automated peakd message:
Hey AUTHORNAME, someone likes your Post "POST HEADLINE" and would like to give credit. Please leave a message under this comment so they can vote again. Thank you!"

The Frontend (or maybe even a Peakd Server?) checks on a regular basis if the comment of AUTHORNAME appears and then notifies the User with a short message and the Link to the comment.

If several people notify vote for the same Post in the 7 Day timespan of the comment, they can vote the same comment to not spam the Author. Also, if someone has used a Notify Vote that is still active, the Notify Button can show this with a red heart. This gives the User and the Author all the possibilities he may want and he also understands that this old post is actually liked by other Users.

What do you think about this idea? If you really like it, and want to support this, i would be happy for your feedback and resteem.

Thanks for taking your time!

If you vote > seven days after the publication of a post it doesn't matter if you vote with 1 %, 50 % or 100 % because your voting power won't be affected anyway.

Nevertheless, it's a good idea to inform the user if he is about upvoting an old post.

I heard that the VP would go back into the reward pool in that case? Maybe that's outdated and i didn't notice the change.

Just test it: upvote an old post with 100 % and check if your voting power decreases ... I know it won't, but if it does, I promise to upvote your comment above as compensation. ;-)

Thank you. I believe you. No need to test that. 😄

This is really I great idea! I often found myself in the position upvoting old articles without noticing! Re-hived (or how is the resteem called now?!)

Thanks for your Feedback and the Resteem!^^
I mean Rehive. 😂

Great Idea :)
This is something that bothered me since my starting days on the old chain with the S-word. ^^

I don't really know what the benefit of the cold votes would be. Currently on peakd you get a small text stating that the post has already been paid out, and your vote won't affect the payout of the post. If you vote that post, even with 100%, your Voting Power remains untouched. In my opinion it would make the UX even worse because calling the votes hot and cold adds yet another layer of needed understanding in order to be able to vote.
The current state does not really need to be improved in my opinion, except maybe a small sentence added to the current notification that clarifies that you will not consume voting power by voting a post older than 7 days.
