Planning for Hivefest

in #hive4 years ago

I am back from our long weekend in Wales. Had a great time with the extended family with wonderful weather. Back to work tomorrow.

Just before I went away we got the news from @roelandp that Hivefest will be happening this year. It is only three months away, so we need to get organised.

Roeland lives in Amsterdam, as far as I know, so I cannot blame him for doing this on home turf. Of course anyone is free to organise events elsewhere, but we know he is an amazing organiser. I missed the very first St--mfest that was also there, but I made it to the second in Lisbon (Portugal) and the third in Krakow (Poland). Both were wonderful experiences.

Fest Stuff

I have a few reminders of those events and I would love to do it all again. It is an intense experience as you are pretty much either listening to presentations or talking to fellow Hivers. Everyone ends up losing their voice to some extent. There have been evening meals and events such as bowling and pool laid on. I did not make it to the one in Thailand, but that looked like fun too.

We have had two virtual Hivefests since then that were enjoyable, but not quite the same. Just remember that anyone can organise a meetup in person or online at any time. Even if only a few turn up it has value.

We do not yet have details of who will be speaking, but I would expect most of the big projects to be represented and quite probably a lot of smaller ones too. We are also waiting to hear about ticket costs, venues and suggested accommodation.

I flew to the previous events from Luton, which is not far from me, but I would like to use the train this time. I have been looking at Eurostar and that could be affordable depending on when I travel. I know flying is generally cheaper, but it can be more hassle getting to and from airports. I can get into London pretty quickly without having to drive.

There seems to be a range of hotels in the city centre. I really just need somewhere to sleep as the days will be very busy. Something like Air BnB is a possibility if I can find people to share with. I just want to be close to the venues.

This is something I am prepared to power down to pay for, as I did for the previous events. It is just a shame that crypto is not doing so well right now. Others are likely to be travelling much further, so I am relatively lucky to be so close.

I can really recommend going if you can. The presentations should get streamed and recorded, but the interaction in person is priceless.

Will I see you there?

I'm jealous... I so wish I had the extra cash for a trip to Amsterdam. Almost $3K if I decided to go and that's just airfare. There are so many Hivers I'd love to meet in person too. Not to mention sitting down for a beer or two with you. Maybe next time. Hopefully, they'll still host the virtual event for the rest of us! Hope you have a great time, can't wait to read the posts!

I'm surprised nobody has organised an event in the US, but then I think someone told me it could be expensive to do so. I'm sure lots of people would be interested anyway.

Sorry, out of BEER, please retry later...

I wonder if there is any interest in a Central American Hivefest.
Virtual is definitely not for me as you miss the human touch.

You can ask. Hive seems to be big in El Salvador. It will depend on cost of travel and venues.

El Salvador is right next door to me.
I am not sure what infrastructure is like there but Antigua, Guatemala is definitely built for having events. I believe there are more international wedding performed here than any where else in the world.
This might be something to write about in the next couple days for me.

Any sort of meetup can be important. Getting a load of smart people into the same room can achieve a lot. We are lucky to have Roeland to organise Hivefest, but there may be others who could take on the challenge.

Have fun! Not going to happen for me once again. Especially given the price of travelling right now and the fact that everything is in the toilet. I have a feeling it is going to be a bit of a struggle to get through this summer without going into debt. I wish there was a large event somewhere in the US at some point. That could be fun. Not the same as seeing everyone from around the world though.

I hope to watch the online stream. I attended the virtual event last year and had a blast. It was great to be around so many folks who understood my excitement. Three months will pass by quickly. Happy planning!

i would like to try and make it along! Would be happy to consider sharing an airbnb as well... how much is the train likely to be?

It's surely going to be fun like always. Enjoy yourself, I'm really sure I wouldn't make it except a miracle happens. It's in 3 months time, though, enough time for miracles to happen.

I am tad gutted. I could really go to Amsterdam no bother but I am going on a family holiday to Ibiza two weeks after and can't really countenance the spend and the going away prior to it. It would have been great to meet a lot of people in the flesh and to square the circle as I went to the first one in Amsterdam!

The timing of the whole thing a bit gutting. Amsterdam is super close for me. I can drive there in about 4 and half hours. But I'm moving back to Canada in September so I'll either be gone or in the hectic process of packing and moving...
It figures really.

That's a real shame. Someone needs to do a North America event.

!BEER

I’m tempted but, a big but. I may be in Prague for Drupalcon during the same month. I’d love to attend it if I could.
