There is also a large spike in volume today. Did a bunch of Steem powerdowns happen today?
I've been powering down and selling as fast as I can on Steem. I see no future on a blockchain that censors users and continues to freeze accounts.
There are a lot of cool things coming for Hive in the near future, I am really excited.
MXC just announced they are going to be listing Hive and Huobi had a fantastic AMA yesterday maybe some of the factors in this pump.
I think the HuoBi and MXC listing contributed a bit to that.

My Steem powerdowns happen every Thursday. They started on the Thursday right before Friday. I wasn't willing to take the risk on Steem's status after the fork, even if it meant missing out on some HIVE airdropped coins.
I guess a lot of people were in the same boat given the # of powerdowns excuted on Thursdays.

The huge spike in volume is probably due to Huobi's announcement regarding "HIVE airdrops" depending on the number of HIVE you deposit to them. Tracking their account, quite a few people are buying from Bittrex and sending it to Huobi right now.
There is also a new listing on MXC w/ USDT pairing announced as well.
Yeah, it is really interesting to see people buying HIVE on whatever platform they can and transferring it to Huobi just to get airdropped. Our volume is skyrocketing.
Can you tell something more about MXC? Never heard about this exchange.
I don't know a lot about them myself, but I hear they are very big in Singapore.
The announcement is getting front and center coverage too.
According to CMC, they're the 3rd highest ranked exchange by volume, and were #2 earlier today.
A lot of those numbers are fake. They cook the books with trading bots. A lot of the Asian exchanges do this. They might be number 2 or 3 in fake volume.
Fixed that for you. :)
MTGOX was the most obvious one. Many others do it too due to lax laws on cryptocurrencies.

I have been thinking about it, I stopped because of my frustrations with Steem and what was going on.
Of course it's awesome that we got a boost, but my Steem powerdown isn't for another few hours! It's all good though. I expect Steem to be almost worthless by the time my powerdown is complete.
Man I'm kind of sad at the moment about Bittrex (not the HIVE pump obviously) but I've been using them and promoting them for like 5 years now, been fully KYC verified for at least 4, never had a single problem with them. Always been my favorite exchange, but about 2 weeks ago I went to log in and they randomly locked my account and said they were unable to verify me.
I find this really strange as I've been fully verified for at a minimum 4 years. I actually got verified before they had the automated system because I had to go through the whole support ticket and wait a couple weeks for someone to manually verify me etc. Anyway, I'm now basically just locked out of withdrawing anything from their exchange, I've had support tickets open for about 2 weeks, almost no communication.
Hopefully this is just a COVID-19 related issue with staffing reduction or something, but it's a firm reminder that even an exchange that I felt was 100% trustworthy and have personally recommended and taught people how to use etc are still centralized exchanges and anything can happen when other people hold your crypto.
Luckily I don't keep any funds on exchanges. Period. I'm assuming that when I was doing some heavy arbitrage trading during the HIVE dip something must have set off an audit or something, but anyway, I just want to make sure people know what's going on. Hopefully it's nothing and I get my account back soon, but time will tell.

Yep, this is exactly why I don't leave anything on them and I'd prefer to use only dex, but the liquidity on many of the dex is so low that it's not always feasible. I've been looking into Block DX and it's one of the most promising I've seen, but again there's basically no liquidity. Hopefully more people will be moving to a dex in the future and we can break this cycle of centralized exchanges fucking people.
