World First, Character Second.

in #hive4 years ago

World first, character second.

I approach life a lot like a game. Many of my quotes can be stemmed from one way or another from games. Football, chess, poker, Everquest, all these games taught me a lot about the human condition. What I love most about games is the fact you play them, you enjoy them, even in loss games can teach you valuable lessons. So, it just seemed natural to approach my life and everything I do as if I was controlling a character in a vast MMORPG.

I believe we are all one conciseness experiencing the world in a vast amount of ways. I try not to put my own life on a pedestal, there will be other games, and if you can't find a way to enjoy this one, you might be caught in a never ending loop of fear and doubt. You cannot genuinely enjoy something you are too afraid to break.

In our new digital world it feels like too much time is spent trying to appease each user where the focus should be making a better world. We can look at Hive as its own world, filled with everything that brings a world to life.

Games nowadays you have flashy graphics, crazy combo moves, and all the glitz and glamour of a flashy game. The characters are really cool! However, once you play the game for a while you realize it lacks depth, you get to the end game and it gets repetitive. This is what you see in most modern-day MMORPG these days, that is why this is considered the great MMORPG drought.

This can be seen when Blizzard released classic WoW, and how popular that game became overnight, despite its poor graphics and outdated fighting mechanics. That is because "back in the day" games were built world first, characters second. My old school Everquest players can vouch for this and that is why that 20-year-old + game today just launched "classic servers" to bring back the original game feel, and yes it is its most popular game for the EQ franchise at the moment, and the graphics are terrible (from 1999.)

World first matters, when approaching Hive and how we are building 3speak, we have that same vision in mind. Good games keep the players coming back for more, they buidl strong relationships and guilds form to conquer greater challenges then they could on their own. Life is a lot like a game I like to think, and I approach it as so.

When someone joins Hive, there should be that "quest" for them to pursue, something to pull them deeper into the community. Things like, "new player looking for guild" is commonly shouted in new areas of games, and new players quickly find their guild to show them the ropes. Guilds help new players understand the ropes, meet, and make new friends, and help get their first piece of armor; guilds are communities.

Hive is literally a blank canvas. It can be easy to sit back and say: "well I am sure someone will do it." That is a contagious attitude that spreads, and so likewise with proactive measures. I feel Hive has been very proactive lately, we should use this momentum to keep pushing forward.

When someone has a introduce yourself post, just dropping a vote with a "welcome to hive" is great and all but what does the player do after that?

Where are the breadcrumbs that help guide the player to have a good user experience?

Games do not tailor to individual players; the game makes something new and amazing the player has never experienced before and the player shapes to the game. Think of Twitter, a simple word cap changed how people communicate in an excessively big way. Make a great game, and people will play it.

Communities are the first step but as we have seen, the community with the most Hive Power backing it is usually the community everyone wants to post to. Which is just the free market speaking, we do not fix the free market we fix the game. SMT's will certainly help in this regard, people want to feel their time and effort has a chance at being rewarded with something perceived as valuable. There is nothing wrong with that, video games drop "gold" and "weapons/armor" that are worth real-life money also, and that is the draw.

Rewards are not a bad thing, quite the opposite. Anything that exploited is done so because it has value. The goal is to maximize value while minimizing exploitation. This is done all the time in games via "nerfs" to balance out the game. We had our own nerf to Author rewards to balance our game and the results were quite pleasing.

SMT's will unlock Pandora's box I believe for communities, but it is still up to us, HP hodlers, to allocate our rewards in a manner that helps several varieties of communities. If we simply have a few communities dominating rewards it will turn those communities into buffet style where you have the old trending model with random content discovery.

Id likes to see communities with stricter guidelines and more niche related content. Leofinance is a good example of this. Too many great examples to name but Leo popped in my headfirst.

I urge developers and would even finance/vote DAO proposals of people looking to "gamify" Hive in a way that makes it easy for front ends to bring their sites to life with feature-rich toolboxes. "Points" will be massive, log in and earn 10 points (like Partiko points) - but also point systems within communities to determine rankings, prestige, overachievers, etc.

Hive is an amazing world filled with countless adventures and good comrades. Now, let us fill this amazing world with epic quests, missions, places to explore, and treasures to unlock. Crypto brings abundance via attention.

We do not realize how much our attention is worth until we all collective focus on something. Our attention alone will bring worldwide abundance in the likes we have never seen. Web 2 divides us, fracturing our communities via siloed, closed source, centralized databases. Web 3 frees us from these shackles and gives us the power to create a digital world that we actually want to live in, but most importantly, we control as a community.

It really is layer zero vs centralization of power. Rampant power is what corrupts, abuse of power is what brings imbalance. We now have our own power, but this power is decentralized and can only be harvested, like the sun. The sun is powerful, but no one controls it, yet everyone benefits from it. This is how I view decentralized blockchains in a tiny way, how they bring us value, and no one controls them.

Sort:

Madden football games were much deeper years ago. Franchise and career modes were so much more fun. In Madden '06 you could literally choose your parents to determine what sort of physical and mental potential you could inherit from them. Like what the heck, you can't do that at all in modern Madden. So many options to customize your entire experience. So many examples but it would take forever to write.
Since 2006 they've stripped and warped BOTH career and franchise modes to the point where it doesn't resemble anything from those glory days. It's like they purposely went against the fans. Today's Madden is purely about graphics, online play, and in-game purchases. Pretty disappointing. I still like Madden because I like football, but a part of me is depressed that those fun Madden days are gone.
Sorry kind of a rant but great post!

Funny I forget to mention madden. I 100% agree. I used to actually be a ”pro madden” player. I traveled to events and played for cash.i hustled on game saloon back in the day. I was top 3 in the world in madden 3 years in a row on PS. Today it is garbage, nothing like it used to be.

Wow man that's crazy impressive, I'm kinda jealous lmao! I'm pretty good I'd like to think but I'm overall probably pretty average. You would kill me lmao. Maybe one day you can tell me some tips. Yeah man I wish they still gave a crap about Madden still :/

Cool to know of your elite Madden skills!! Great post

Just wanted to say thank you for the upvote on the Piggericks post. Trying to built something that brings us all forward and every support is appreciated!

From some time I have seen Hive as an MMORPG that is very fun to play, that's why the past two and a half years I have switched from "normal" games like Overwatch to building content in Hive, engage with my fellow players and guild mates and play a lot of games like @splinterlands.

Well said bud. Which got me thinking that we still have a long way to go.

I remember my early days on Steem...lost. Like lost for real. didn't even know how to use the upvote button or how often before I drain my VP. Not that the 0.001$ of my upvote value made a difference anyway, just saying that I wish I had some sort of guidance. Sadly I found out everything on my own, the hard way.

The thing is that I sensed that Steem Hive is the right place for me right from the start. That's why I stayed. I am not so sure that every newcomer will feel the same way, which is why it is so important for us to find ways so that every single day will be like a fresh start.

Not only for the ones that join us for the first time but also for the old guard...so that they won't abandon the ship...

Have a good one mate.

Hello @mindtrap... today is my 90th day in Hive, I am a novice hehe, you know I have heard a lot about how difficult the path was in Steemit for anyone who entered new and I will not deny it, at first I was afraid, I was scared to hear those stories, sometimes I wondered if I should stay or not, but I decided to stay why?

My story is different: Supported by @rutablockchain, its members @danielvehe and @enmy instructed and guided me, and while I was sometimes overwhelmed by all the information on how the hive was working, I didn't give up, but in a game where everything is easy, you get bored, don't you think? I feel like I found my clan in this game called Hive ... in 90 days I learned a lot, I left my soul in each publication and, above all, I had a lot of fun, I broke paradigms, I do things I didn't do, I made new friends, I'm part of a community called Rutablockchain and I became Minnow ... I couldn't be happier ... I can't deny it, I'm in love with this game called Beehive.

Support is vital, but so is the desire to play and learn.

There are no truer words than what you have said. I feel we all need to focus on the newbies that are expectant, find a way to make them add value and reward them. In a matter of time they will be full time converts ...

We can look at Hive as its own world, filled with everything that brings a world to life.

Definitely agree, #Hive is our own world that no one dictates to us nor controls us what we think. If I will use #facebook often, the platform has the control in my mind for exposing myself to the vulnerability of using targeted by ads. Remember "The Great Hack movie" by Netflix.

Web 2 divides us, fracturing our communities via siloed, closed source, centralized databases. Web 3 frees us from these shackles and gives us the power to create a digital world that we actually want to live in, but most importantly, we control as a community.

Day after day, my mind is telling me that Web 2 is not the right approach in all of this. Even if the founders of Web 2 is good actors and has good intention at the start, it is only a matter of time for being corrupt for so many reasons. The law in the country under your jurisdiction is another thing to consider.

Decentralization by bringing back the power to the people will solve this. Great read @theycallmedan

This is so true ... decentralization gives everyone and anyone a voice. I stand with hive

I like the analogy of the sun and definitely our new found decentralisation can play an important role in how the community and hive in general would scale in terms of mass adoption. Keep up the good works Dan

This analogy of the sum was my best part of the post. It never crossed my mind, i had to calm down and absorb. I just hope the Nigerian community will key into this opportunity

Hi Dan!

We have a few ideas with this respect concerning the STEMsocial app (proposal #91). We actually already have various badges made by our designer to represent a part of the rewards attached to some goals. The next step is to figure out what those goals are and get some more concrete associated rewards on top of a badge.

What we have in mind is to associate gamification with engagement and a homemade reputation metric. It is of course not like a game in the pure sense of it, but it matches the goal of the STEMsocial project (science communication on Hive within a very-alive community). Any other idea is more than welcome, of course!

PS: those badges and gamification stuff are not explicitly indicated on the project roadmap, but it is on our longer internal to-do list. We started this with our Honour Members initiative, which was resurrected 10 days ago (see here for more information).

When someone has a introduce yourself post, just dropping a vote with a "welcome to hive" is great and all but what does the player do after that?

I am happy you made emphasis on the above

With right support, we can once again make hive more interesting to the Newbies.

Stemsocial so far has really demonstrated their willingness to support newbies and guide them on how to maximize the benefits that comes with hive and dropping good post by once again reigniting her honorable member functions.
I believe support to the community will make their goals realistic.

I believe these ideas will not only lead to on-boarding of new users but will lead to massive adoption of the hive blockchain. This is why I support the proposal.

I think this will be great.

I urge developers and would even finance/vote DAO proposals of people looking to "gamify" Hive

It's something I've thought about for a long time. I already made a first trial of education through play with the Hive Revolution - Mission 1

This to say that this is exactly what the Hive Gamification Proposal aims for.
Get it funded and I'll bring you the quests you are looking for!

Edit: he he, I just noticed HiveBuzz challenged you in the comments of this post to give more upvotes. I guess you're up for it ;)

As one who done a bit gamified the downvote game on Steem with MMORPG elements, it is true that the ability to apply the same more broadly to our social media can make for quite a compelling experience.

(If you explore some of my former projects, you will find I used sprites from a RPG called Shining Force to represent users' progress in flagging abuse for instance)

I think HIVE is prime real estate for text based games particularly and that is something that can be explored further. I'll see what I can do.

The decentralised platform always taught something new every day...it is amazing to be among the great player and trying to be good amongst the best. ...make everyday count else it get wasted....👍

Hello @theycallmedan,

A very good analogy to consider your vision of what Hive should be.

I disagree with you, I think that the real characters (People) come first, and on this basis, the ecosystem must be built here. Only then will it survive the vicissitudes of time.

There are those who lead and others who continue to support them in achieving the goals they share.

Success to everyone in their role.

I really admire your words. I am more and more excited to continue doing something here. Thank you for everything.

I'm with you all the way.

Life is game Play it on Hive

We’re definitely building great teams filled variety of talented individuals

Let the hive Revolution begin

Great to see you back making noises on twitter and hive !

Thank you:)

Let's together let the world know about Web 3.0 Revolution with our Hive

Hive to the world.. i have started my gaming mode already.. a quest to leave the red fish zone as soon as possible .. i dont know how fast that will take but i am on it .. i am enjoying the engagement league. I am just enjoying hive

Keep up the good attitude my man

Thank you for the encouragement

Only through vision do we accelerate innovation. Expecting miracles in the coming weeks and months!

I believe hive so much

true. well said.

decentralization has empowered the users, users like hive users so we have the power. No one tell us what to do and that shouldn't make us not go do the best!

Great post @theycallmedan.

Hive is literally a blank canvas. It can be easy to sit back and say: "well I am sure someone will do it." That is a contagious attitude that spreads, and so likewise with proactive measures. I feel Hive has been very proactive lately, we should use this momentum to keep pushing forward.

My thoughts exactly. Now is the right time to build Hive as we imagine it to be. Once the masses are knocking our doors we HAVE to be ready.
Each one of us needs to take the situation in their hands and offer everything they can on the Hive "table".

Awesome post Boss @theycallmedan

Your all words are right especially the hive is a great place to find a lot of opportunities to take and also you can find a lot of friends...And i learnt a rule from a game if you run you live :) i generally play Dying Light :)

Have a nice day...

A lot of interesting stuff on hive, provided one is flexible and don't stick in a certain bubble/community.

There are people like you who have the ability to draw great lessons from everyday situations. Sometimes we think that great knowledge can only be obtained from books, but this is not always the case. Using the metaphor of the game to show us the potential of HIVE is an original and effective idea. You have a great capacity for communication. Congratulations.

nice a deep post. Everyone has played at least once in their life a MMORPG. I have spent too much time of my life doing so and dreaming to be a warrior or whatever character I was using.

Using your words "Points" will be massive, log in and earn 10 points (like Partiko points) - but also point systems within communities to determine rankings, prestige, overachievers, etc. that is a good thing. You have mentioned you wanted to have community leaders for every community was present on HIVE. An Idea as you suggested would be that every community has points that will reward their "intensity" on Hive.

I.e. we have lots of SMT that could be used to reward people instead of giving them directly HIVE so for instance... I have proposed myself to be the leader of the Italian community... in our community we could use for instance the ITA SMT... the more a person is active in the community the more a ITA token could be earned and this will motivate people being active as much they can. Like in a MMORPG... the more you play the more EXP you earn and the stronger you will be.

This is just an idea buddy... will see when we will have an answer regarding the leader application :)

Hi Dan : )

I absolutely believe Hive has been very productive lately! Thanks for everyone’s involvement in growing the hive-mind creatively and beautifly!

I’m just going to drop this coin here, and tip my hat to @frankbacon for all his inspiration.

The hidden influence campaign.

Personally, i decided I was going to encourage at least five new hiveans by reading and engaging in their introductory post. But i think following them up is a problem i need to focus on.
Also, i look at hive as a game i am addicted to, like i want to leave the red fish zone as fast as possible. I have been powering up all my rewards so I can move faster. I also joined the engagement league to make things better of which i am enjoying at the moment.

I feel whales should focus on discovering new talents and support them as this is the greatest form of encouragement. It wont take anything to upvote five posts in the introduce yourself tag by each whale as a form of support.

On a final note, i stand with hive and i believe in hive.

Hive to the world

I have that very similar thought, where I say that if you stop playing or like what you do, everything can become a stress and you will not be prosperous.

Lots of energy in your publication.

Building Hive, 3speak will help us to be more free.

Congratulations @theycallmedan! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :

You distributed more than 40000 upvotes. Your next target is to reach 41000 upvotes.

You can view your badges on your board And compare to others on the Ranking

Support the HiveBuzz project. Vote for our proposal!

Id likes to see communities with stricter guidelines and more niche related content. Leofinance is a good example of this.

Other communities are trying too just that our mindset especially for new comers is to join the community that pays more instead of helping other communities grow.

#theterminal has strict rules too that compels their redfish to follow.

I approach life a lot like a game. Many of my quotes can be stemmed from one way or another from games.

I do too. I would liken my own approach to as Scrabble

I urge developers and would even finance/vote DAO proposals of people looking to "gamify" Hive in a way that makes it easy for front ends to bring their sites to life with feature-rich toolboxes.

I guess it's little by little. All these would be achieved someday.

Love the sun analogy. Makes total sense

Un cambio de paradigma.. ampliar los pensamientos... :-)

Hive is one of the best games. Compared to the ego feeding you receive on traditional social networks, here it is not only your ego, but you are also financially rewarded for your content.

Why do I mention the ego? Because we all know how our self-esteem rises when we complete a mission and move up a level. It's the same here with reputation and our wallet. So I love this game! And I'm inviting several to join.

Thanks @theycallmedan, for your thoughts.

Music and art too

@theycallmedan am new here and I must confess you are my practical motivator that gives me a pat on the back and hunger for More.Making hive and @threespeak a fun place filled with new exciting mysteries to unravel.
In your exact words that "Guilds help new players understand the ropes, meet, and make new friends, and help get their first piece of armor; guilds are communities"
Bravo! Kudos!Thanks for being you.
I now know my place better and what's expected of me by the community

Life = Game, Human Beings = Players, Experience = Results, Outcome = Lessons.

Have a wonderful time ahead and stay blessed always.

I have thought if I am in the right place, I have had either opportunities and the nightmare of losing the game prematurely.

I see many opportunities here and I hope to be good enough to create a bond that lasts for years and that keeps me motivated and with that passion with which I arrive, people get bored quickly when they do not get what they want and that is normal, especially when they see that what they sow does not bear fruit, I think that thinking of this as a game where the main objective is to grow from the roots and expand comfortably and correctly is the mission of each one of us.

Hive may be what other communities have failed, I hope that opportunity is not lost in a hallway full of unfulfilled promises.

Why does the Hive 7nd-in-command go down Boating?

this is a post of exceptional beauty. Now I understand that it is no coincidence that 3SPEAK is currently the best video sharing platform on the blockchain.

Why do you down boating my posts?

Let's live in peace.

I did the upboat of your post.

I want to stay in Hive, too.

I am a beginner, I started to understand this social media when hive was just born. and I do not understand about the games that are here.
