An Ode to Parsnip

in #homesteading8 years ago

Pastinaca sativa you delicious white beet
Scarcely seen on today's market street
You've been growing in every garden of old
this is what our anchesters told...

In German we have many different names for parsnip. They all tell us what it was just for besides in the kitchen for cooking - "Hammelmöhre", "Hirschmöhre", "Moorwurzel" or "Welsche Petersilie". What are the names in English - honestly, I do not know - you tell me :-)

Today's chicken soup was enriched with parsnip, autumn carrots, cellery and parsley from the garden. A big thanks to @coffeetime for calling for posts on parsnip :-)

Hope you all are having an enjoyable Sunday and Cheers from the seven mountains in Germany.

Beautiful. People round these parts aren't partial to parsnips. I only had to plant them once in my garden, now they're everywhere. Volunteer Parsnips harvest.jpg

These are all volunteers. Yummy!

haha, this is the kind of permaculture I am doing - I forget to harvest at least one every winter and then am happy to let it go into blossom and seed all over the place - gives me many volunteers every year - just the same with mangold (leaf beet) ... glad you enjoyed the ode :-)

Love the poem and love parsnips too...

Thank you cecicastor :-) and Cheers from the seven mountains in Germany

It looks like my love of parsnips even reached you in Germany.
