It is always something around here, but at least we are not alone.
If any of you saw this post from @bluerthangreen, then you know that after getting some advice from @mobile-joat, we had given @bluerthangreen and @allforthegood some fertilized chicken eggs to try to help them out. Since they do not currently have a rooster, they have no fertilized chicken eggs. The goal was to give one of their Muscovy ducks something to hatch, since she had lost her clutch of eggs to a Black Rat Snake.
The mama duck was having trouble coping with her loss so we gave her the opportunity to hatch something with the hopes that she would move on and get past her loss. She did hatch a chick, but the goal wasn't really achieved. Since they now had a new chick, @bluerthangreen and @allforthegood made a brooder box and hooked up a heat lamp.
With only one chick in the box though, it was a bit of effort and electricity, plus the chick was lonely...
ON TO PLAN C?
Since we already had two hens raising two chicks, and since one of those hens was the biological mother of the chick and not the duck, we figured that we might as well try to see if they would take care of it. They could provide it with company, protection, and warmth if they did not reject it.
This chick was quite a bit smaller than its siblings, and we had no guarantee that any of them would be kind towards this little one. If it worked, then this chick would be fine and no one would need to spend any more electricity or real effort in raising it. If it didn't, the chick could be wounded or maybe even killed.
Under close watch of the @little-peppers, the chick was placed in the nursery and observed. So far, this will be its second night in the nursery, and things are going better than expected. It is such a tiny creature compared to the other ones, and we are hoping that it might even be a rooster so that @bluerthangreen and @allforthegood could have one for their flock. We will see.
Truly it is always something around here, but with animals and children, and nearby friends to help, it is a huge blessing and real joy to be a part of. We will keep you posted!

Iam loving your posts. Have you considered solar panels for electricity? It looks like you get the sun for it (I could be wrong). With batteries they can be really reliable

they put bigger eggs and the geese will surely attack any strange animal that wants to hurt because the geese are demons.
Geese may be the best guard animals you could get for your homestead. Gaggles will attack en masse, and intimidate predators. The bastards have even attacked me! And I'm taller than them!
Anywho, hope you can get them a rooster. Are those New Hampshire, or Rhode Island Reds?
Chickens are the most merciless predators the world has ever seen. Shrink to <3" and put on a grasshopper costume, and you'll see what I mean. Also, chickens love grasshoppers - to eat!
I knew a farmer who threw whole (dead) cows into his chicken pens, and it was like watching piranhas. In less than an hour the cow would be nothing but bones, and the chickens... well, I didn't want to fall down in the pen.
Is that cow story real? Fun read either way.
It is true. A former Libertarian candidate for Oregon Governor, Fred Oerther, had an organic chicken farm, where he tossed cows his neighbors who ran cattle were just gonna bury, cuz they had died for reasons that made them unfit for humans to eat.

I was actually asking about the chickens. ;) I used to keep New Hampshire Reds, and found them good layers, and just good all around chickens.

I really don't like chickens but my mum and lil brother love them alot especially my brother, so we have chickens, goats, rabbits and white rats but the white rats are all dead. The lessons I gain from your posts will be passed to my animals lovers at home.

The chick that didnt quite have to size. Its a good thing the chick is growing at ur place papa...good tender loving care. Keep us posted on its growth. Maybe it will be a magnificent cockeral.

Great blog. We love our chickens. Its hard for us to incubate chicks living off grid but hope we can find a broody to help with that.
You make me want to settle down with my girlfriend and homestead. She says all the time we need two horses because they require the company and lately she's been trying to get me on the idea of having a deer too.
It is kinda heartbreaking to see a mother animal knowing she lost her offspring,,,
