Small But Mighty..

These little dogs aren't the first thing you think of when you hear "farm dogs" but it is amazing at what they can do.

We found these dogs at the end of our road on the coldest day of the year. They were only seven weeks old so we brought them home so that they wouldn't freeze to death. We didn't really plan on keeping them at first but it has been over four years now and we are glad that we kept them.

On our homestead we have a rule that if we cannot benefit from the animal it has no home here. The other day this guy killed a possum all by himself. They have also chased off foxes and killed countless moles and mice. They have also killed some adult birds. I have no clue how they pull that one off but every so often there is a dead bird in the yard.

They also dig holes and lay on peoples jackets but they also earn their keep.

Love me a little mouse/marmot catching dog. They are so lucky to have met you on that coldest day! They want to make you proud and seems they're doing a fantastic job! I wonder what breed they are. Just wanted to point out though that possums are very useful, they can kill about 6,000 ticks in their lifetime. Still though I'm impressed such a small dog could take one on!

We have been having problems with our chickens getting killed and we think that the culprit was a possum. Our turkeys are great at getting rid of ticks. Thank you for sharing that info though.

Awe they are handsome little fellows! I can't believe they have gotten birds! We once had a cat who occasionally went outside and could NEVER catch a bird. He used to sit out in the open near the bird feeder thinking he was so sneaky. The birds knew exactly where he was and were not even afraid of him! We are getting chickens this spring and really want to get a dog to guard out home.

We have a cat that guards our chickens. It sleeps with the chickens, kills rats and it will even lay on eggs.

Oh wow! Ours was a purebred Ragdoll. So he probably had no instincts left in him :D
